GUFAW.
I grew up in south west Ohio but was brought up a Hokie at heart. I wore my Tech gear everywhere and quickly became known for my love of all things Tech. I was dating a girl in high school who thought it would be funny to joke around and give me a Wahoo shirt for my birthday. I was single a week later. Go Hokies.
Logan is still are best option at QB. I tried to look at his mechanics and on the plus side he didnt appear to be throwing off his back foot as much.
that I find it interesting that you see Tech stuff all over Cville. You don't see ANYTHING blue and orange in Blacksburg that I can recall. And as a local, Cville has some definite positives. It's also nice when somebody tries to give me a hard time about being a Hokie, it's always easy to say "Gee....what was the score of the football game last year?....oh yeah....38-0!" (or appropriate score for whatever year it might have been).
We local Hokies need to get together sometime.
Tweet from Andy Bitter:
Foster didn't know how long win streak vs. UVa was. "Eight? I thought it was nine. I lose track." #Hokies
i also must remark, we wore #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING during that game in 2006 #BRINGBACKALLMAROONEVERYTHING
Pennsylvania (PSU) takes care of Maryland and New Jersey to satisfy that rule, if it indeed is an issue.
Delaney says this move is all about demographics...translation: this move is all about the $$$ because of the boatload of people living in the DC to NYC corridor who will potentially be tapped into via the Big Ten Network and by the next TV contract that the league negotiates. Demographics is just a slick way to say that the B1G is trolling for more paying customers and is not afraid to offer 2 wallflower programs tickets to the prom in order to capitalize on their "demographics." Does the words "prostitution of an institution" mean anything here?
Welcome to the B1G, UMD and Rutgers, you are about to become the eastern football versions of Indiana and Illinois in the conference. Let the perennial beat-downs by OSU, Michigan, Whisky, PSU and Nebraska commence. There's always basketball to look forward to, where your teams have a shot of breaking .500 once or twice a decade.
Agree with you Stud. Particularly the middle of the OL was being pushed back all day. Caleb really struggled with the Nose. The bad snaps were a result of Caleb trying to get into his stance quicker than usual. I wonder how many times Caleb has had to block head up on a nose guard this year? Wang was getting pushed backwards per usual, and even Benedict was missing some blocks.
If he has a shot to be a head coach and gain experience, you can't blame him for doing so. Same with Bud in my opinion. I never blame someone for trying to better themselves. But I sure would miss either guy if they left.
B00M!
it was a game in Lane in maybe 01 or 02 and I went to high school with the UVA safety Jerton Evans. After we beat them we rushed the field and after I said hello on the field to him, I watched as my drunk older brother would walk up to the police (with his arms raised) and say that they couldnt arrest him because he wasnt doing anything wrong.
I would much rather see Shane Beamer moved over to Special Teams Coach/Recruiting Coordinator and let the new OC bring in his own offensive staff that fits his philosophy. Shane coached special teams at SC and seemed to do well, plus this would also take some heat and responsibility off of Frank's back as he winds down towards retirement.
He only needs like 140 yards, so it's very possible.
It is what it is .. MD7 will probably end up being the first 1000 yd receiver from VT .. and still be drafted in the first 3 rounds .. what does that tell you?
Ok obviously Davis is the Division one athlete and I'm a division 1 nothing... but I'm trying to figure out why he doesn't block. There are a number of possibilities, maybe some of these?
A. He doesn't like blocking
B. He isn't physical
C. He is lazy
D. He doesn't give a crap
"As for Lazenby's comment, I wouldn't be so quick to bash the staff on that one. It's entirely possible that those sentiments were conveyed to Lazenby with the expectation that they wouldn't be broadcast on social media."
I don't think it's really a point of it making it to the public via social media (which is irritating yes)....it's more that if they even really THINK that, it shows arrogance, cronyism, and self-preservation. Considering Whitfield's track record to boot, it makes our coaching staff seem flat out silly and ignorant if they really believe that a week with Whitfield has caused Logan to regress so much.
I have a few theories:
- we have NO running game to support Logan, no superstar (enter DMFW) in the backfield that demands attention
- we have a weak ass offensive line .. period. Consider the talent on the line and the fact that it takes most of these guys 3-4 years to CONTRIBUTE, he probably has very little confidence in his oline
- enter the pressure of being a preseason draft god -- He doesn't want to get hurt so he's making quick reads, bad throws -- not to mention the fact that he's being expected to wear about 10 hats
This coaching staff is bad, bad, BAD, about not taking responsibility for losing the game. I don't give a fuck if the players lost the game or not. Part of the job of being a CFB coach is taking responsibility. Fact of the matter is this: Except for FSU (and Clemson offensively and UNC in spots), VT has more raw athletic football talent than anyone they've played. They were manhandled by Pitt, beaten by Cincy, embarrassed by UNC. Regardless of why, they're not being prepared in practice or game-planning well enough and that falls on the coaches. Execution has been bad across the board but it ALL falls back on the coaches.
..at the end of the FSU game. In the 2nd half, Knowles was on the field a lot.
I didn't get to see the whole game, only the ends of both halves, so take this with a grain of salt.
While it's true that UNC-G shot a ton of outside shots, what worries me for the rest of the season is poor rebounding position by most of the guys (Raines was pretty solid however). You can rebound adequately with athleticism alone against a team like UNC-G, but in the ACC our 'bigs' will have to be much more fundamentally sound in blocking out. We will be undersized in the frontcourt, which will pose problems later this year.
That being said, I was happy to see effort on both ends of the floor and like others have said, this team is fun to watch. The way this team shoots the 3 will keep them in a lot of games during ACC play, but I think we'll struggle mightily against teams that play great team defense (i.e. Duke, FSU). Still though, I'm glad to see this team having fun, since it makes it easy to root for them... something I haven't said about the last few Greenberg-coached teams.
You wrote "The offensive line delivered their best effort run blocking since the Duke game." I wasn't impressed with the OL at all, to be honest. They pass-protected well, as they usually do. But once again their run-blocking proved to be spotty at best, especially considering that they were going against an undersized BC defensive line.
As for Lazenby's comment, I wouldn't be so quick to bash the staff on that one. It's entirely possible that those sentiments were conveyed to Lazenby with the expectation that they wouldn't be broadcast on social media.
But yes, you are quite correct in pointing out that even if the training in California had messed up LT's mechanics, Mike O'Cain has had more than enough time to get them corrected by now. In fact, I think this actually strengthens the case for letting O'Cain go at the end of the season.
Like you, I will be surprised and disappointed if either O'Cain or Curt Newsome is on the staff next year. I will be equally disappointed (but not as surprised) if Bryan Stinespring is still our offensive coordinator, although I sincerely hope that he will remain on the staff in some capacity, perhaps as TE coach and recruiting coordinator instead. That would give us an offensive staff of ...
Shane Beamer (RBs)
Kevin Sherman (WRs)
Bryan Stinespring (TEs and recruiting coordinator)
????? Todd Washington, maybe? (OL)
????? (QBs and new offensive coordinator)
The year was 1998, the day was November 28th. It was my sophomore year at the fine Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
At 8-2, the Hokies were having a pretty decent season considering the fact that in order to preserve Michael Vick's redshirt we had to put Safety Nick Sorensen behind center more than a few times that year. Highlights 'til then included a 37-0 road thromping of Clemson, a 27-20 overtime win over Miami in Lane, and a 27-13 win over the cousins in Morganhole. Low points included an embarrassing homecoming loss to Temple and a heartbreaking 4th quarter loss at the hands of Donovan McNabb in the Carrier Dome. (That Temple game is the most embarrassing loss I have ever experienced as a Hokie. Luckily I wasn't present for JMU in 2010.)
This made for a pretty good showdown in Blacksburg between the 16th ranked Hoos and 20th ranked Hokies. I felt pretty good about our chances, but I wasn't overconfident.
I brought down my Dad and 2 bothers-in-law to the game. My two brothers-in-law were born and bred in the Commonwealth of Virginia - at the time, they were both UVA fans (but I wouldn't call them Wahoos). My Dad really didn't have a horse the in the race, but was pulling for VT because I went there.
At any rate, Tech jumped out to a 29-7 lead at the half. Things were looking peachy and the Hokies looked like we were set for our 9th win of the season.
Well, then the 2nd half happened. We scored just one field goal in the second half, while UVA scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter and 15 points in the 4th quarter. Down 36-32, a potential 4th quarter comeback was snuffed out when Sorensen through an interception with 40s left.
UVA won 36-32 and my brothers-in-law made sure I knew it.
After that game I refused to ever again bring a Virginia fan into Lane for the UVA game.
On the plus side, since that game Virginia Tech has won 12 of the last 13 games vs UVA.
Another question: will he start this week? Although he made several nice catches, his blocking was still nonexistent and pathetic vs. BC.
Thanks French. FWIW none of your video clips are set correctly. They all start at the opening kick off.
In '04 we snuck my Wahoo friend in using my ID and a student ticket, then he didn't get the whole "hand me my wallet" so I could use my ID again. Gate guard didn't care - all cool.
Some of the best memories might be at Charlottesville though:
In '05 a buddy and I stayed up until 4am the night before painting a banner in my friend's dorm (which I have hanging on a wall in my house) with the Grinch wearing Tapp's jersey and saying "Our Hero: The Grinch; Terrorizing the 'Hoos since 1957." About 15 minutes into the game and already 15 points down, our Wahoo friend said "Ok, I'm going to go pack, and let's leave for home at half time" (This was the weekend before Thanksgiving break).
In '07, as commander of the Army ROTC program, our friend got us in the stadium before gates opened to "sell seat cushions" and we then reserved front row seats in the student section for our group.
Then last year... 38-0...
We've seen for YEARS, when defensive players do not perform, Bud sits them and moves on. He does not tolerate it. The offensive coaches apparently do. This whole issue more than anything points to the need to clean house on the 'O' side.

Cal coach was fired today....was QB coach for Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller, & Aaron Rodgers....hmmmm.....maybe a QB coach on the market??
