1. From what I have read on other message boards, the LSU fans aren't wanting to get rid of him simply because he isn't winning national championships. They want to can him because he can't field an offense capable of the forward pass, and his stubbornness to address the issues and improve obvious weakness on the LSU team (a la Frank Beamer *COUGH*COUGH*).
2. The uniforms have become stale and unimaginative. They were cool when they were first reintroduced in 2009, but ever since making them our main unis I have noticed how many other teams in CFB use the same pattern uniforms. Specifically Ole Miss and LSU with the 3 bar stripes on the shoulders and numbers without any sort of outline. The old hokie uniforms with the white numbers on the front and back with orange outline in the hokie font and the orange numbers on the sleeves could only be associated with VT. Couple them with the traditional plain maroon pants and we have a signature uniform that no other program in the country uses (now that Tex A&M have went to the weird stripes all over). You can update it with modern touches or you can leave it the same. It's traditional VT; Orange & Maroon with no frills, just tough football.
Whoever is in charge knows jack about branding--they really should be fired. Eliminating the TV logos and the kickin' chicken (aka fighting gobbler) removes two of our strongest brand elements. Yet we water down our brand identity with poorly conceived and poorly executed crap like we saw Saturday. God, that was so bad.
I'm pretty sure most of the UMD alumni base would disagree with that statement.
There's more prestige in ACC basketball. Maryland is a basketball school. Kevin Plank is trying to make it a football school but it won't happen. The only hope UMD has is grabbing all of the PA recruits that can't get into PSU because of sanctions. However even if it happens, this "surge" will only last the span of time that PSU is under scholarship restrictions. The year PSU gets full scholarship allowance UMD will be back to where they started at best.
Plus, the only school sin the Big10 that has any prestige close to that of tobacco road is MSU and Indiana. Illinois is off the map and I'm not convinced the dirt that has plagued OSU football hasn't spread to OSU basketball. The rest are too inconsistent to be concluded upon.
This isn't about Maryland; this is about Kevin Plank trying to push UA's exposure into the Big10. Why do you think the UMD board of regents has been kept in the dark about this? He's making an incredibly speculative investment in the idea that his company plus Big10 network will equal the east coast version of Oregon. The only problem is that if he's wrong, his company goes under, and UMD loses all of the alumni that basically stop donating because of this move.
I don't like this idea and still think someone will stop it at the 11th hour. I won't be at all shocked if the Board of Regents votes this down by a considerable margin.
hip is one thing .. those helmets?? wtf?? if a hokie helmet EVER bears anything pertaining to a turkey/hokie EVER again, i would like to see some feather pattern only (ala oregon ducks) .. now that would be the shiz
i'd also like to see some blue-collar unis with nothing but 2-3 colors and numbers on helmet (or not) .. ala alabama
as far as the hat ... love that dude ... if he were available when CFB retires, would probably give left nut to get him for VT .. and i say that as i loathe LSU (my brother in law and sister-in-law, who is an alumni are huge lsu fans).
a big part of me says fuck the SEC .. tired of seeing them win .. and with notre dame becoming quasi ACC members, i think i'm pulling for them .. but i have good friends who are georgia fans, and i'm a mark richt fan (one of the few good sec coaches) ... so if they beat bama in the SECCG and play notre shame for the natty, it's a push .. if notre dame ends up playing bama, go irish .. if notre dame happens to lose and we see bama/georgia vs florida, #LOLSECWTF
on yes and btw

And overestimating Duke/UNC. Indiana, MSU, Wisky, Ill, Mich, Minn, Purdue and Ohio St are all excellent programs. Compare that list to UVA, FSU, BCSU, Wake ....adv B1G. Why shouldn't UND leave? More money. UnderArmor to cover exit fee. History of ACC diluted by expansion. It's a no-brainer.
Remember when we used to feature maroon? Remember when we wore all maroon for big games? Remember when we used to win?
Had a hearty laugh at the comic book unis yesterday. Second worse combination since the white helmets on maroon effect (white helmets Aren't that bad...just not on maroon effect...seriously!).
Hey, they took Texas A&M after a 6-6 season and look at them now. I don't want to go to the SEC at all, but it's not like we're less attractive after one season. Still have a great fan base and bring the DC/NOVA market.
That athletic department already has no money. Good luck finding $50 million sitting around. UMD is one school in the ACC with absolutely no rivals, I don't know anyone that will miss them.
hahaha was gonna post this exact thing but couldnt find the gif of the scene i was looking for.
ESPN posted the times. We, my friends, have a nooner on our hands.
1. While Saben has proven (IMO) that he's the best coach/program builder, Les Miles is a great coach, and one of the best motivators in the game. If my program needed one win, in one big game, on national TV, I'd want him as my coach. As sample size increases, he wouldn't be my first choice, but for one game, gimme Les.
2. I agree. IMO, you have to find a medium between brand recognition and "flashinesss." You want people to flip through channels, and say "oh, that's the hokies playing" without looking at the scoreboard. At the same time, I do think (unless your a top program like Bama), that it helps to have a "hip" appearance. IMO this shouldn't be hard for the hokies - Maroon/orange is a pretty unique color combo.
When I read "Not giving them, wounded with nothing left, the respect they deserve would be foolish. Then again, it’s UVA." this is the first thing that came to mind:
I just love that this was immortalized on national television.
This kind of stuff makes it hard for me to respect UVA. But I do see your point, because if we go into this game with a "it's just UVA" mindset, we're asking for heartbreak.
With that said, our horrible season will not stop me from making as much fun of UVA as possible this week. It's the second greatest week of the year (turkeyday and UVA hate week, y'all), so I'm gonna enjoy it!
Let's go! #BEATUVA
The part of all of this that makes zero sense to me, as well as my mother (UMD alumni), is that UMD is a basketball school and has always prided itself on being a basketball school. They had some brief periods in the past where football has prospered but overall that is few and far between compared to the success of the basketball program. This was the case when my mother graduated, this was the case when I was growing up, and this is pretty much the case now. A move to the Big 10 would undercut their pride and the possibility that UMD would allow that to happen is beyond the realm of anything I'm willing to accept.
Combine that with the simple fact that the UMD market (washington/baltimore) has too much competition compared to the relative size of the terp fan base. The combination of the redskins and, most notably, the ravens wouldn't bring that much more revenue to the big 10 market. My optimistic guess is it would be marginal when you compare the size of the metro dc alumni base to that of Penn State, when considering overall dedication to football.
I realize that the Big 10 does bring some quality opponents to UMD's basketball schedule, such as the Michigan State Izzos and Indiana and (at some point) Illinois, but that isn't anywhere close to the level of opponent maryland continually faces from tobacco road. Ask any UMD alumni: the UMD/Duke rivalry is second to that of UNC/Duke in the ACC, and this has been the case since the 90s.
I understand the UMD has a serious financial problem and needs a solution, but they have way too much to lose in terms of image and possible alumni repercussions from switching to one of the best, if not THE best, basketball conferences to a mighty football conference. I don't think this gives the Big 10 that much more other than a marginal increase in tv revenue and the possibility of penn state finally shutting up about not having a regional rival. All this being said, until I see the press conference that proves me wrong, I think all of this is sabre rattling by UMD administration to get something. I'm not sure if that something comes from Swofford or from Annapolis but I think, at its core, very few in UMD society want UMD to leave and someone will step in and do something to prevent this bluff from being called.
1. Les Miles looks like the pressure is really getting to him. I dont know how much longer he lasts at LSU. The fan base is / was calling for his head even when he was winning national titles. (Personally I wouldnt get rid of him but I have heard some of the fans dont like him)
2. Why mess with the Hokie Uniforms? I understand other schools are doing cool things but ours look sad/turrible. (Side note I dont think flashy uniforms and changing them up fits the preception of the Hokie football program, blue collar work hard.)
thats my Two Cents...and its UVA week!!!
Seriously, if the ball hit the ground there is no way it carried that much velocity/distance from a bounce AFTER already being tipped. Fuller didn't just bat it as it was bouncing up either. Refs couldn't see if it hit the ground or not. Fine. How that ball exploded from underneath his hand though highly suggested it didn't. On a call already made as a pick....
I think it's an interception. However, like the announcers said, it's hard to tell if the ball hit because of the color of the logo. If it were called a pick on the field, I think it would have remained.
Saw this Preview and wanted to make everyone aware that there is a Thanks Killing 3
Everyone act sad about this, otherwise the B1G might change their minds and we'll be stuck with the Terps.
and to the other team

I'd rather have this turkey on the side of the helmet than that creature from saturday.
