"The ACC representative will play the highest available ranked team from Notre Dame, the SEC or the Big Ten. However, if the ACC's highest-ranked opponent would create a regular-season rematch, the Orange Bowl has the flexibility to avoid that rematch by taking the next highest-ranked team from Notre Dame, the SEC or Big Ten."
-Glad no Big East team!
-I like that its the highest ranked of SEC or Big Ten, that'll give us a great matchup
See what teamwork can do?
Trojans
Red Raiders points
Badgers get the half point
Monarchs (not eligible for the conference title so have a chip to settle)
Bears
Ducks
No, the jury is not "out" on Sherman. There's no way in hell he should remain after allowing Davis and Roberts to give such pathetic effort, and they aren't being taught proper technique and fundamentals. The success of Coale and Boykin was about what was inside them - not Sherman.
Haha, I remember hanging out at The Library/Waterstreet (which I don't think is a bar anymore) and Ronald Vincent Burns (Vinny Burns, the punter) and a bunch of the other FB players were there. He was trying so hard to get a girl and the other guys kept shutting him down. I actually started feeling bad for him when he looked like he was begging for scraps. It was classic watching that go down.
i think the jury is still out wrt sherman .. he helped turn in two very average WR prospects (out of high school) in danny coale and jarrett boykin into:
a) the two best receivers (statistically) ever at VT
b) nfl prospects
will they ever be #1 or #2 receivers? no ... but let's not understate how impressive the two of them were
mike o'cain -- i think he gets a little too much flack .. he'll probably be a scapegoat and should take some of the blame for lt's regression but his playcalling hasn't always been bad and i think that his hands are tied a lot by stiney and frank beamer. people have said it on this and other boards and i'd agree -- typically, you want your OC and QB coach to be the same guy. it just makes too much sense.
as far as recruiting, you're right on with all of your remarks.
I am a fan of the VT current logo so don't get me wrong but from a design standpoint it is pretty dated and basic, we definitely don't need to redesign the logo but I am a big fan of the "t-v" logo and fighting gobbler. I actually wish we would do a Hydrochrome helmet with the fighting gobbler on the side.
I will most definitely be looking into buying as much retro stuff i can.
all blacks ruled
First, I think we all realize that the Orange Bowl won't be VT's main bowl home the next ten years like it has been. So, we're not going to get tired of it...as a fanbase. Funny how a reset button season like this changes that perception.
Second, the most likely teams to be in this bowl game the next 12 years are Clemson and FSU...with Miami, UNC and VT not far behind. We can fill the OB up with those five teams, even Miami if they are so fortunate. Having ACC teams in a BCS bowl where we actually fill up the stadium is step #1 on recreating our credibility.
Thirdly (?), playing the 2nd/3rd best team from the B10/SEC or ND actually gives us a chance to win the game. Step #2 in regaining conference credibility.
Finally, no Big East team. With all due respect to the Big East (read: none), they were the cause of many of our traveling problems. Who wants to fly/drive to Miami in the middle of the week to see Cincy? (crickets) I believe I read that they will also play these games on weekends or 1/1, right? No more Wednesday, Jan 4th games.
So, we can't complain. Credible opponents, stadium more full, winnable. I'll take it.
I appreciate and respect the historical significance, but I honestly never was a fan of the T-V logo, I feel like it reads TV not VT and the T just looks like Tennessee's T. I do like the fighting gobbler though.
Seems like it should still be produced though because people do like it, maybe unofficially?
one of Newsome's strengths was SUPPOSED TO BE recruiting the Tidewater.
he sucks at it. Probably worse than his OL coaching. He brought in Tyrod because he was buddies with Tyrod's dad. Since then, he lost out on a number of 757 kids until we reshuffled the recruiting duties down there to hide him.
Sherman, by the way, the worst recruiter we have. Including Foster.
O'Cain may be worse than Foster as well.
We have three excellent recruiters in Shane, Gray and Stiney. Cornell shows promise, but he's really been under the radar with recruiting and position coaching since he's been here. Foster isn't as bad as he used to be, he really has done a nice job in NOVA the last few years. Wiles is solid, always brings in a kid or two from out of the area. MOC, Sherman and Newsome are awful recruiters....and, notably...the poorest position coaches we have (although there is significant debate about MOC)
not San Diego State. San Diego Torero's....a team that occasionally gets mentioned in March because they play in Gonzaga and St. Mary's conference.
Not SDSU.
And it was for one year.
and I haven't been able to get one in the last few years.
I actually had my mom sew the fighting gobbler onto a VT flag for the house.
..he hasn't been playing football very long. Hopefully this "dropping three punts" thing will wear off after he gets more time in the game.
based on twitter, he's actually pretty tight with some of the guys ... not an "outlier" like most punters.
I have never seen a punter get love like that. awesome.
hughes is gonna be a serious weapon for us in the coming years
Preaches brand protection, unveils hideous all-black and camouflage uniforms and hokie tracks helmet.
MAN!!!!!!!! The T inside the V is my all time favorite logo of any team, any sport. Sounds like I need to make a run to the bookstores and stock up!
Thank you guys so much for these. I look forward to these every week. They really are one of the highlights of the week. Not only do I get to hear what fans more knowledgeable than me saw, but I get to watch the game again. This game more so than others cause there was so much to really be happy with...........of course, there was plenty of bad too. I found myself in the stands with my family yelling the whole time, "Where the hell has Bud been hiding these guys!?" It was nice to see the D play the way they were built up in the off season. Alabama is gonna be a rough game, but if Bud pulls the magic out again like he did Thursday, man, we might actually have a good game to watch :) I was shocked with the receiver change announcement, but only because it came so late in the season. Davis has been lackluster most of the season.......WHY? This guy should be THE go-to man. And Roberts........oh, Roberts.....come on man. If you aren't gonna put forth the effort, step aside, we have some guys behind you that ,I'm sure, are gunning for some field time. I'm still a Logan supporter all the way, and that hasn't changed, but we gotta stop the 3rd/4th and Logan EVERY drive. It has become THE most predictable play in our book. I LOVED when he would run over people in 2011, but he hasn't really done that many times this season. I mean, personally, I don't think he can really get up to speed in the small amount of room he normally has to work with after the O line pinches in. There were a couple plays that he could have broken loose on Thursday, but by the time those plays developed to that point, the ball was either in the air or in the RB's hands. I won't start with the inconsistency on the passing. That's just a given at this point.
All in all, though, the complaints I had were the same ones we have had most of the season. Plus, this was a good effort for the most part, and a great game to watch, even better if you were in the stands. For the first time this season, I didn't see the student section start to dwindle down in the 1st quarter, everyone was there in the 4th, people rocked the stadium on defensive plays and tore it down on the 3rd and key plays. They were supportive on offense but quiet enough for the snap to be heard. The fans(for the first time this season, I felt) showed up and brought the team with them. The Hokie nation was loud, proud, and showed why "Thursday Night in Blacksburg" is such a big deal. Could we have won? Yes. Did we play like the team we should've been all season? Yes. I still hold that we can bring home the W against BC.
Go Hokies! Semper Tech!
over on 24/7, but the way he writes so passionately about VT..i tell you he would prob take a pay cut just to come to VT...sounds like a good dude and he was the OC at San Diego State for a while too...
Or will the team still ban the use?
One of Newsome's strengths is recruiting the Tidewater area. Any coach we bring in to replace him needs to be an excellent recruiter who can establish good relations with the H.S. coaches in Tidewater.
I think it’s a pretty good deal as far as what the ACC has produced overall the last couple years. I think the orange bowl is betting on FSU and ND becoming legitimate. Hey, it could have been worse with the inclusion of the big east champion as a maybe. Playing the second ranked SEC would be a hope for the best game wise, but anytime you have a chance at playing ND, and receiving a little of their spotlight is plus for program image. I guess they’ll have something set up that there won’t be any rematches as far as any ACC and ND matches with the 6 scheduled ACC games for ND.

They are listening to the guy behind them holding the clipboard saying "I told you it wouldn't work!"
