2007 by far, especially when you add in a big play nickle in Virgil.
These guys have a bunch to prove. Exum was always on his guy in coverage, but really struggled to find the ball. He ended up with his back to the receiver numerous times (with Michigan's last touchdown standing out, but he got toasted against Arkansas State in the 2nd quarter and the guy dropped the ball.) Fuller has proven to be an excellent tackler, but not a big playmaker IN THE PASSING GAME with breakups and INT's. I think Bonner had as many picks as Fuller and Exum last year. 2007 had playmakers, even if they got burnt from time to time.
Jarrett is a guy who just made more sense to me at corner. If they are planning on playing a bunch of man and 4-4 G, he should be fine in coverage, but playing the angles in run pursuit after years at corner would be tough.
Stanford had some kind of a key where they would get Tech to audible to a slant strongside (usually to the right side of the Stanford line, then they would run power plays back to the weakside. The stunt left a DE and the whip (JWG) exposed needing to beat blocks one on one. For the most part, the backside blocked just like a zone play, but it worked like a down block, then the tight end would just murder the whip and the end (who had contain responsibility) would get kicked out almost as an afterthought.
That comes from two places: 1) weeks of NFL caliber coaches getting to review film on Tech to see if they could influence the slants and blitzes with formation and 2) having a strong, fundamentally sound offensive line group including tight ends that you trust to use running to the weak side.
and at this point it, isn't close.
was running on tech in the first half, pretty easily, that got easier. sigh.
the valpak and groupon divisions!
2013 should be way better than 2012 in the secondary. 75% of the starters are at a new position this year, there could be some adjustment period. After they settle in (and with the youth coming up), this unit could be special.
has been the one ranking thats been getting to me as well. what did michigan do to show they were a top 10 team, under 200 yards offense? we made denard look like a child yet he is a heisman contender? colin cowherd actually had us as a top 10 team this season. i like the lower ranking in the polls and no pressure for the team nationally. i hope this season can be similar to 2004 when we weren't ranked but had a great year
I think the secondary will be fine this season (as long as they can stay healthy), an aggressive defensive line will really benefit the guys behind them. I think Fuller will be an All-ACC player, Exum has the chance to break though, but next year is when they steal the show, maybe the best in the country... All four projected starters return, Kendall's on campus, Manning, Tookes, Boye, Frye, Riley are all a year older. I'm too excited for it.
I agree with most of that but I disagree about Georgia..they'll be better than USC ...Texas?? Thought the same thing but don't know enough about their team this upcoming season....Arkansas?? We shall see...Michigan? Wtf ever
Chancellor was a force against the run at rover but a bit of a liability in the passing game. I recall him (and basically everyone else, to be fair) getting torched early by LSU.
I think Bonner and Jarrett have the converted-corner skills on their side, as that should help a lot in single coverage. However, I would look for Bud to try to generate pressure just from the front 4. I don't think you'll see a lot of blitzing from the secondary or safeties sneaking up to check the run as much.
Please make this video happen!!! Could you imagine turning this power hour compilation on at the tailgate about an hour and a half before kick off for the GT season opener
Its been nice reliving all these big plays.
Funny you mention this. I was just watching all four of the VT highlights last night on YouTube as part of my annual "get ready for football season" tradition. Those guys were mean as shit and had a knack for big plays. They had some stud line backers in front of them too which helped them play loose but aggressive. We have the potential to be even better this year considering how strong our D line and LB's are. yikes
A lower center of gravity can be a good thing. He's always around the top of the strength tests too.
In my opinion it wasn't so much that they made a schematic adjustment (other than including more pre-snap movement to play on the issue I'm about to mention) but that our Defense was down to lower-string, lighter players who couldn't keep up with the physicality of Stanford's offensive line. That caused some frustration in the secondary, which led to blown coverages, missed tackles, etc.
Do we have any idea whether or not he will take a visit? It'd be an amazing recruiting year if we could pull Green in along with Kendall.
I agree on Mangus, he looks really good in his highlight films. He looks to have great vision and DW type speed.
Now 2012... has some potential. Fuller and Exum could really give us that CB duo the same way Macho/Flowers did. Bonner seems to be able to lay the wood and a heady football player. Jarrett is an unknown but all these guys have strong upside. It's easy to be optimistic.
Macho provided so many highlights, man I loved that dude. How about
- That forced fumble vs BC in the 2008 ACCCG where he chased the dude down and knocked the ball out at the goal line
- His pick 6 vs Duke back in 2005 (I think it was his Fr year and the first pick 6)
- Pick 6 vs Cincy
- Pick 6 vs ECU
- Clemson 2007 (god that game was a highlight reel. was the secondary ever better than Macho, Flowers, Parker, Kam?)
- Everything he ever did, because he was awesome
It's easily the best intro music to any radio show, on the air or in digital format. Glad you guys enjoyed it. There's more of this thing to come (hint, hint).
Hey Joe, actually was impressed with the chemistry you had with a crew halfway across the country over the phone. This was great hope you all do more!
He just visited Ann Arbor, but didn't commit, which tells me he's not sold on Michigan. I think Auburn has the best shot right now, but the fact that we're in his final 6 without him having visited yet seems pretty big. He probably drops Oregon, Tennessee, and Ole Miss by October.

...has us ranked at #5 in the country. There are still a bunch of people out there that believe we will have a very strong team this year.
