Am I getting overconfident that we'll be able to better compete with Clemson this year based on the following assumptions:

  1. Your analysis above holding true, but with our refreshed/deep D-line being able to slow Clemon's run
  2. Clemson's new D-coordinator implementing a less pro-oriented scheme

from Clemson beat writer Greg Wallace via Andy Bitter: http://hamptonroads.com/2012/06/ask-another-teams-beat-writer-clemson

"I think one of the biggest reasons actually was Steele’s defense. It was a pro-style system and designed to work against pro-style offenses, which is precisely what the Hokies’ system is. Steele’s downfall came against spread-it-out, fast-paced systems like West Virginia’s.

Thomas still has plenty of weapons. He's pretty comfortable with Davis and Coles already, and Roberts coming back will give him a more experienced option as well. Plus, he can implement the Denard strategy and let those guys make plays if he can't find anywhere to go with the ball. More often than not, Coles and especially Davis, can make a play over a DB.
Yes Wilson is gone, and thus the big play capability is down, but I expect those running backs, whether it be Holmes, Coleman (?), or Scales to move the ball more efficiently. Wilson had incredible balance, but Holmes and Scales seem to be able to run people over to get an extra yard or two.
O-Line will be the biggest focal point coming into the fall in my mind. Can we get consistent, quality play across the O-Line. Hopefully David Wang can stay healthy, Vinston Painter can improve on a good spring practice. My biggest question mark is with LG, whether Benedict can hold up and keep up with guys he will face.
Of course this is all based on what I watched in spring scrimmages. BUT, I think Logan Thomas has developed really well so far, and I expect steady improvement from him again. Maybe not the same stats, but a more mature quarterback. I think Thomas is going to be really good, again.

However, I've seen very few notable glitches in '13. At the end of the day, however, Madden is EA Sports' flagship franchise. Thus, it will likely always be a step above NCAA in quality. But I do believe this version is of pretty good quality. You'll love playing as the Hokies, given their well-balanced team and the improved abilities of LT3. In fact, I burned WVU online with a zone-read option from the VT 40, going to the 3rd yardline on setting up a TD.

I agree little risk of it going to his head...so the extra hype will actually be helpful imo, as I think it will allow us to climb the polls faster once we start winning. Don't forget we are entering the pre-season poll near the bottom of the top-25 this year.

We can certainly debate the possibility of a championship run for this season, especially if Holmes works out and the o-line gels, but we need some star-power to get noticed and talked about if it is ever going to happen.

Plus it will get in the opponents head, making the trucking they get when he lowers his shoulder all the more sweet.

is where he says "football is just a hobby for me". But overall, the kid sounds like he has his head screwed on pretty well. We just need Bud to stay inside his head.

If my Giants have taught me anything the last few years, it's that a good pass rushing end is invaluable and makes the players behind him that much better. I'm very interested to see how these 4 DE sets play out this season.

I've bought this game every year since 2001. I thought last year's edition was a rushed, buggy, piece of of crap. The custom playbook feature crashed the game, and when it didn't all the plays showed up as a mess of question marks. I thought the gameplay was terrible, and choppy. I vowed not to buy this year's, but not I'll probably end up trying to demo to see if I like it.

I think there was talk of this before, but we could probably get a league going.

Hype is always just that: hype. Davis and Coles could well be NFL caliber, Holmes will be solid but Wilson was a special talent that only comes around so often, and then there's the oline. Dont get me wrong, I'm optimistic about the talent but lets face it Newsome aint got the best track record. I think they'll come together but it'll be a work in progress.

All that being said I think Logan wants to be great and he's got a good head on his shoulders. He works hard and he's humble, he's got all the tools he needs to be that first round pick. There's no doubt in my mind he'll realize his potential, and if that oline does gel and we can get a solid ground game from our young backs. . . who knows what the ceiling will be this fall.

Don't get me wrong Logan Thomas is great, but he had NFL quality receivers, an above average OL, and a first round NFL draft pick named David Wilson. He doesn't have all of that next year. LT is going have to make better reads, pass in smaller windows, and do all of this with less time to be successful. Can he do this? I think he can, but I see crazy talk like LT will be a first round draft pick next year. I think everyone needs to get their expectations straight. LT is going to have a bad game or two next year and it could cost us.

against Stanford in the OB? Did Jim Harbaugh out scheme us, did we execute poorly, or were we outmanned? Seems there were a lot of big plays in that game and during the year. Does the defensive scheme lend itself to this or did we have weaknesses in key positions? I would argue we had bad match-ups of speed vs. speed. But the biggest thing is probably the QB ability to react quickly to the pressure (a key part of the Hokie D). In the big games where we got burnt it was the opposing QB's abilities that made the difference. Aaron Rodgers, Kellen Moore, Andrew Luck all have great skills under pressure. But I don't think we put enough pressure on them either due to match ups on the front line and some weaknesses in coverage, both due to injuries. Not sure Tahj Boyd's skills are of the same caliber but he took advantage of us as well.

Only one team per conference should be allowed in a 4 team playoff. I would say the same for an 6 or 8 team playoff. In a 4 team scenario that does not mean only four specific conferences will be represented every year. The super conference idea should be nipped in the bud. I am sure that Notre Dame will have a say for independents, or previous non-BCS AQ schools, getting a chance at the playoff. There is a chance for all schools to break the previous coalition of major conferences, which prevented many from receiving BCS at-large bids. The details of the selection committee will be key to ensuring fairness. Competition for TV dollars and championships should be a free market and not the current collusion.

That report is old but I am always leary of this type of story. There are so many unanswered questions about the data. It is designed to be controversial so that it gets attention, discussion, and generates ad revenue. They are trying to draw a conclusion based on flimsy data and poor analysis.

They used "preseason" rosters for their data source and they did not have juvenile crime records for about 80% of the players. That means there are likely many uncounted "crimes" that would drastically change the rankings. I would say most, if not all, of the players charged with crimes while a player are no longer on the rosters.

What is more important is how a team deals with bad behavior of players. The report does nothing to show that aspect of any particular program. VT has a very low tolerance for bad behavior and there is no controversy about that. Does VT recruit "high risk" players? I doubt it.

I doubt the committee would send the ACC champ cross country in that case, but I suppose it would be their prerogative

yeah we were raging pretty hard down there for the kansas orange bowl. had a great time cept for the game of course. i have family in miami so i sorta of know where to go, where not to.

So what happens in years that 1.) the Orange Bowl hosts a semi, and 2.) the ACC champs make the playoffs? Is it ACC champs to the Orange Bowl automatically, except this time it's part of the MNC proceedings, or could the ACC champs still wind up in the other semi in this scenario? There's just so little hard info available right now.

Two options:
a. Don't sleep and continue to rage new years eve/orange bowl
b. Sleep for a few hours and continue to rage new years eve/orange bowl

Be careful, though...Miami has some rough parts of town
