F$U is just so appropriate. BIG 12 will not bring F$U football "back".

I think they're posturing in the hopes that it forces a leadership change at the top of the ACC - which wouldn't make me sad if that turned out to happen.

Of course I saw it after I wrote this post. I think retaining third-tier rights are just icing on the cake, not a primary motivator to leave.

Also, Miami was floated as being the 12th Big 12 team to accompany FSU, but that may be unlikely.

With reports surfacing over the last few days that Florida State would entertain conversations with the Big 12, a member of Miami's board of trustees doesn't see Miami considering a similar move. "It's highly unlikely," the BOT member, who wished to remain nameless, said. "I'm not sure Miami's academic standards are a good fit in the Big 12."

I could hardly fault FSU for being pissed and looking elsewhere. When weighing alternatives, nothing speaks louder than concrete dollar figures. If A > B no matter how conservative your assumptions are, you go A. Unless you are fully vested and can telework once a week.

That being said, nice jabs at their entitlement and Wake Forest record.

Also I'm a little perplexed by their lack of foresight here. They vote to raise the exit fee last year, everybody is kumbaya'ing over the ACC with Pitt and Syracuse coming and taking the lead on expansion, etc. Did they really expect more from this renegotiation? The honeymoon is over and they already feel like they settled.

If this does come to fruition, We Should AcSECpt part III.

The following blog entry by @ChaddScott has some really great information on this subject, and (assuming it's accurate) makes the folks clamoring for FSU to the Big 12 look like doofuses:

http://dev.chuckoliver.net/2012/05/third-tier-rights-defined-perspective-on-their-value/

Here's a nugget if you don't feel like reading the whole thing:

I’ll bottom line this for those of you who think FSU should dump the ACC for the Big 12 because the Big 12 would allow the Noles to reap huge profits from their third-tier rights. If FSU left the ACC for the Big 12 the only additional athletic inventory it would have to offer a TV network is its worst football game and three or four additional men’s basketball games. How much money do you think the Seminoles stand to gain from the ability to sell their football game vs. Savannah State and men’s basketball games against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Southwestern, Jacksonville, and UNC-Greensboro?

What he's saying is that moving to the Big 12 wouldn't allow FSU to retain much more of their 3rd-tier rights than they already possess in the ACC.

Not as bad as a draw as we might have expected a couple weeks ago, considering the way the team performed in the ACC Tournament. Getting to the next round - especially at the expense of the Volunteers - would be sweet.

If VT and two other teams in the ACC (preferably either FSU, Clemson, GT or Miami) can live up to expectations and go without losing any 'stupid' games (ie, Wake/FSU '11, NCst/Clemson '11, GT/Clemson '11, JMU/VT '10, etc.) then ACC football will be held in high regard by the media and no team would really consider leaving.

-Top 3 SEC teams (LSU, Bama, Ark) had a combined 3 losses going into the post season, 0 to non-top 3 conference teams, 0 out of conference.
-Top 3 P12 teams (Oregon, Stanford, USC) had a combined 5 losses going into the post season, 1 to non-top 3 conference teams, 1 out of conference.
-Top 3 B10 teams (Wisc, Mich St, Mich) had a combined 6 losses going into the post season, 3 to non-top 3 conference teams, 1 out of conference.
-Top 3 B12 teams (OKst, Kst, OU) had a combined 6 losses going into the post season, 2 to non-top 3 conference teams, 0 out of conference.
-Top 3 ACC teams (Clem, VT, FSU?) had a combined 9 losses going into the post season, 4 to non-top 3 conference teams, 2 out of conference

If the ACC as a whole can avoid a lot of out of conference losses and the top teams of the ACC can avoid losses to the middle/bottom of the ACC, then the ACC can get some respect. More respect for the ACC football = less speculation/rumors/possibility of realignment.

It needs to be posted to YouTube as soon as possible.

If FSU is as cash-strapped as they claim to be, I highly doubt a conference switch at this point is going to make things any better. This is all saber rattling by one goofus who has a bone to pick with Tobacco Road.

The TV deal is an albatross but it IS more income than we've been getting. Considering the national-level product the ACC has been putting on the field the past decade, I'm not sure we deserved much more than we received with the deal.

The highlight, in my opinion:

"And that is why, when you all are out there in the world and you meet someone and you
tell them that you’re from Virginia Tech, and they say, 'Huh, isn’t that the school where' -- I
want you to interrupt them right there and say, 'Yes, it is the school where we have some of the
best academic programs and professors in the country.' That’s what you tell them.

You tell them, 'Yes, it is the school where students are passionate about serving their country
and supporting each other. And by the way, which also has the best campus food you’ll ever
eat.' Who can say that?

You tell them, 'Yes, it’s the school where we produce graduates who are leaders in their
industries, and pillars of their communities, and who carry their Hokie pride with them every day
for the rest of their lives.' You say, 'Yes, that is the school I attend. That is Virginia Tech.'"

Obviously depth will be a major issue in 2013. At guard we'll only have Erick Green, Robert Brown, and Marquis Rankin. Jarrel Eddie and Marshall Wood - - who reminds me of a more athletic AD Vassalo with a worse shot, although his J is suprisingly smooth - - will have to be extremely versatile swing players. Cadarian Raines and CJ Barksdale simply cannot get hurt, and need to be in the best shape of their lives considering the minutes they will play. Joey Van Zegeren needs to contribute, play defense, and track down rebounds.

All in all, I think it's a suprisngly talented team, although with only 8 players we will obviously wear down, which makes me wonder if we'll play more zone defense. Losing out on Harrel really does sting considering our depth problems. If anyone gets hurt, this team could be almost sad/funny to watch...

BUT, on a positive note, this allows JJ and his pretty good staff to recruit the hell out of 2013. We'll have needs everywhere, and have the numbers to sign a large class.

Losing Harrel is not a suprise, or a reflection of JJ. Bottomline - attrition happens when coaches get canned. JJ needs to start focusing on the relationships his new assistants have and haul in a great 2013 class.

None of them have coached at great basketball schools. But they're relatively young and hopefully that energy will translate into success. At least Ramon has been to the NCAA tournament in 2 of the last 3 years with Groce (just hired as HC at Illinois, did not bring Ramon with him). And I guess Kanaskie was a part of the NIT champion PSU team in 2009. Well, I guess that's actually a lot better than anything VT has done...

speaks volumes on his opinion of Doe-Doe. In response to being asked about Finney-Smith and Harrell:

“We’re losing six points a game in Dorian Finney-Smith. Montrezl Harrell never scored a basket, never got a rebound for Virginia Tech.”

JJ did also mentioned he really wanted Harrell to stay with the team, and I truly believe he put in a lot of effort to keep Harrell. But he hasn't said one thing positive about Doe-Doe. I don't know, my take is JJ didn't care much for Finney-Smith.

Is JJ must develop Eddie and Barksdale into the SF/PF combo that can play at an ACC level. It's a tough situation, and injuries would really hurt this team, but the cabinet isn't bare. JJ's ability to recruit will be scrutinized, and deservedly so. We'll what kind of recruits he can lure in 2013 & 2014. If he has success recruiting, nobody will care about Harrell and DFS.

Come on, let's be real for a minute. He's going to college to play hoops, who has the better program: a transitioning Tech or defending national champion Kentucky (where I think he'll end up)? He had a tight relationship with Seth, Seth is gone. In part, he gave his word to play for that coach, not James Johnson. I went to Tech as a CS major, if 4 months before I enrolled they canceled the program I would've probably looked elsewhere, because I wouldn't have known any of the things I've come to love about the school.

I wanted him to stay, but questioning the integrity of a kid looking to start his adult/professional life off on the right foot is silly.
