The important thing to take away from this is it's a coin flip.

Sooo worth it. I grew up in the area, went to the last VT-Clemson game that was at Death Valley ('07?), and it's a blast. In all seriousness though - watch out for the Clemson fans. I was about 10 rows from the top of the stadium last time, and I was honestly worried I was going to get thrown off the top at the end of the game. If you want a better deal on a hotel (and think someone with you won't be too drunk to drive), stay in Greenville. It's only about a 30 minute drive or so (well, depending on what side of town you stay on) but everything is so much cheaper than in Clemson proper. Also, DT GVegas is pretty fun. The Carolina Alehouse is (from what I've heard, I haven't been) awesome, Coffee Underground is a cool place to chill, and all the restaurants are amazing.

First, Ekanem seems to be all but a lock. I just don't see what other school could grab him now. I thought Notre Dame dropped my confidence in getting him down but with them all but out of the picture, how do we lose him?
I think we land Caleb but so does just about everyone from WVU. The little note from Andy Bitter about him convincing Brooks Abbott to walk on makes me think he announces tomorrow that he is coming to Tech. WHy would you convince an All-American to join a school you don't plan to attend? Unless he changed his mind since the U.S. Army game, I don't think he goes to WVU.
As far as Kirven, I honestly think we land him too. That's my head talking. My gut says he has fallen for Nick Saban's charm or the ability to play early at Tennessee. I read the interview that you linked in this post yesterday and again this morning searching for clues. To me, he sounds more giddy about Tech than the others but maybe I am just reaching.
I thought we stood a chance at Jackson Matteo but it seems as if he committed to UVA today. Word was he planned to announce tomorrow but it seems that he couldn't wait. Then again, I'm only trusting a soft verbal.

And for the record, signing day destroys the NFL draft in terms of off-season events. I'm beyond excited for tomorrow!

If you graduated from VT there's a 40% chance you live in the DC metro, it's not a hard sell on the economics of this. I'm not complaining about it I wish they would do this every year.

I am hoping to make that trip as well, always wanted to visit Death Valley. As long as that game is not in October I should be able to go.

My friends and I have already been planning our trip for some time, ticket prices arent a reason not to see the Hokies play... The pricy trip this year will probably be Clemson if we decide on that one or not...

i make the trip as i live in roanoke and it's cincinnati .. if i was a hokie fan in nova though, it would be a no-brainer .. and we all know you that for you nova hokies, 65 bones is chump change :)

kirven has a broken leg .. if i had to guess, he would be red-shirting for norfolk state based on his injury

sounds like he's very studious and wants to be an architecture major, which is why i think bama is out (not to mention that it looks like bama has room for 1 more DL on the roster and kirven is #3 in the pecking order behind goldman and tomlinson)

i think vt has the edge .. apparently, he had a very good visit over the weekend.

they're both very good schools. the only i could see that would draw him to tennessee are

1) playing in the sec
2) if he prefers their defensive style (vt not known for pumping out DLs to the NFL)

1. Kirven can play next year. He will most likely (definitely) RS at VT and 'Bama.
2. If he wants to play in the proclaimed "God's Conference," UT is the closest SEC school to home. (I think he wants to be close to home. We'll find out Wed)

is a complete sell-out crowd for every game. No other ACC school can claim that success, although Clemson and FSU get more fans into their stadium. $7/ticket (have no idea what they are now, but this was the price when I graduated in 2004) is not egregious by any means. I paid more on alcohol before the game than the price of admission.

To much of our chagrin a lot of issues this last year came from inconsistent kicking. Something we have taken for granted for the better part of the last decade with a revolving door of good guys.

I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of flack about this but I think the uproar about these prices is a little petty. Those that are not season ticket holders spend much more than $100 to drive the 3-4 hours to blacksburg, stay the night, eat, drink, buy swag, etc. I went to the Boise St game and bought my brother paying $50 per ticket that I snagged through CL. The secondary market will help allocate tickets per the respective fans price ranges. Those who go to Blacksburg any given saturday shell out sometimes twice face value for marquee games.

Also, a VAST majority of Hokie alum live within an hour to two drive from Landover therefore making the game essentially come to them. I know this argument loses some steam for those with families trying to pay for the group. Nonetheless, if you're already living in the area you're merely offsetting the travel expenses and "family time" of being locked in a car for 4+ hours.

Hard to beat a 50 minute Metro ride over the 4 hour trip to Blacksburg.

On a recruiting note, is Kirven a natural fit for DT at Tech? I only say that because you'd be hard-pressed to find a major contributing tackle at VT with his frame in recent memory. John Graves came in as a defensive end at 6'3 and we all saw how Nick Acree didn't mesh naturally with the position. It seems the ideal VT tackle is a bowling ball at 6'0 or 6'1 and tipping the scales close to 300. I love the end of getting bigger on the defensive line, but just curious if anyone has any insight.

I am fortunate enough to have the money so I don't care about the prices or who we're playing. I've never missed a Hokie game in Landover and don't plan on starting with this game..it being easier than the first two :-\

I look forward to the opportunity of the team I'm rooting for in FedEx actually being worth a damn..

I'm sure VT had to give some sort of blessing to have the game moved but VT wasn't the driver here so I can't see why VT would agree to sell any set number of tickets (outside of the normal away game allotment). That aside, let's be honest. VT is going to easily bring 30,000 to 40,000 people to this game so they would cover any sort of ticket sale guarantee. Tickets will be available on the secondary market but the ticket offices of both schools will be the primary ticket vendor unlike bowl games that have ticket brokers up the wazoo and a sizeable chunk of tickets doled out to sponsors.

Just a complete different animal than a bowl game.

There's more at stake here, though. Kelly didn't say it, but Cincinnati almost certainly will receive a large payday for its move to FedEx. Indiana recently agreed to move a home game against Penn State to the Redskins' home and received $3 million. The Bearcats, who badly need facility upgrades and will have to give Kelly and his staff raises to keep them, can use the extra cash.

The only reason why Snyder paid for a Cincinnati home game is because it was against Virginia Tech. The primary reason for Cincy to sell it: money. Both parties knew a lot of Hokies in the DMV would be willing to show up to this game. It's a good situation for those of us in the area because we don't have to travel to Cincinnati to see the Hokies play.

If what happened with the Sugar Bowl is any indication, most people will buy their tickets from the secondary market. What I'd like to know is if VT is on the hook to sell a certain number of tickets.

I'll go to Cincy. I'll bitch about the prices, but ultimately it's a pretty cheap trip to get there and it's a team in another FBS conference. Also: I would like to say I have a good feeling about this Wednesday, but I can't really invest too much into the decisions of 17-18 year olds with sights oftentimes prematurely set on the NFL. It wouldn't surprise me if Kirven and Caleb went elsewhere. But I'm hopeful they wont.

Recall that this was a Cincy home game that was sold to the Redskins. VT may have some ability to push ticket prices in one direction or another but the prices are mainly being set by Dan Snyder. The VTTO and VT AD can be blamed for plenty, the ticket prices of this neutral site game vs Cincy isn't one of them.

All those alums in NOVA who don't wanna drive 4 hours for a game are gonna snap those tickets up. Dan Synder is an evil bastard, but he's making sound money off these VT games.
