The SEC runner up lost to FSU

um I dont think there is anything arguably about it

Phillips actually doing his job you say....I was shocked he had enough in him to say this much

Phillips on Monday said in his statement that Notre Dame is "an incredibly valued member" of the ACC and there is "respect and appreciation" for the Irish.

"With that said, when it comes to football, we have a responsibility to support and advocate for all 17 of our football-playing member institutions, and I stand behind our conference efforts to do just that leading up to the College Football Playoff Committee selections on Sunday," Philips said. "At no time was it suggested by the ACC that Notre Dame was not a worthy candidate for inclusion in the field. We are thrilled for the University of Miami while also understanding and appreciating the significant disappointment of the Notre Dame players, coaches and program."

I generally don't love hiring Pry as a DC. BUT! If Franklin could somehow build a world class coaching staff from exclusively VT castoffs, and win with it I would be strangely into that. That would be one hell of a movie script!

The 'hoos had Shawn Moore in 1990, and he was damn good and had them undefeated. Alas, injury smote him and they had to go with their backup and they whined about that being the reason we beat them and they fell so hard from their perch. Their backup was Matt Schaub, so their gripes were pretty hollow. Fun to see them fall that year. That was also the game I bought my Wuck the Fahoos button from a shyster with a bucket of them for a buck apiece. Best buck I think I've ever spent.

Pretty sure he's a proven DC at the P2/4 level. May not be elite but has fielded some damn good defenses in his time.

edit:

If he was coming from another program as a fired coach, no one would give it much thought

This right here that Mattboard just posted

Only caveat is the ACC schools that go there do get $1.5M for the game appearance on NBC.

He was at least a competent DC before (and some years top 10).

If he was coming from another program as a fired coach, no one would give it much thought.

I'm oddly ok with this. Now bring on Fuente as OC and we will have completed our coaching trinity 😂

I feel ya bro. May your dad's memory be a blessing for you through these holidays.

I had forgotten about that game. Thank you for stoking my ND hatred just a bit.

This isn't getting nearly enough up-votes

I also think this has impacted voting to an extent to. You get way more G5 schools receiving votes during a season as voters now have a narrative to push to separate a few up so they are easy to delineate when it comes to highest ranked. JMU at 12-1 (78th in SoS) and Tulane (11-2) (70th) if you look at opponents is not facing nearly the schedule of even 9-3 GT (56th) or 9-3 Arizona (49th). Let alone being ranked right after Michigan (22nd) and Utah (27th).

I can't logically understand how anyone thinks this is remotely a good idea. Is this just a matter of "In James We Trust"?

I'm not really sure there is that much more parity.

You understand that basically every data point suggests that there is more parity, right?

Still a no for me. Pry, a defensive-minded coach, supposedly knows everything about how to be a defensive coordinate and picked both of these two and they failed miserably.

and if they dont join a conference, do what another posted mentioned in another thread and just have every P4 conference mutually agree to stop scheduling ND ever again. Let them try to inflate their rankings against the G5 and FCS schools and see how far they get.

I think Pry has a good chance as regaining elite DC status but it's far from a sure thing. At PSU, he took over as the sole DC and play-caller in 2014. Led by Pry's defense, they became perennial top-25 (often top 10) program. His defenses at VT were not good. His best defense was 2024 (ranked 25th), but ultimately underperformed including some headscratching moments (like Syracuse) . Changing up the DC and scheme this year was an abject failure (notably, Pry only coached 3 games).

For 2026, it is unclear whether he can still scheme up a defense or what the scheme will be. As VT DC (as compared to VT HC), he should have better roster and better position coaches. I think he probably still has the ability to call up defensive plays within a game to get his players in a position to succeed. As long as he can figure out a scheme, I think he will have success as DC.

I'm aware. Most of what comes out the US Federation is a joke.
The other side of me says if we want that limited travel, well, go win a world cup and become a real player in the landscape of international soccer...like France. (I feel like they've earned it.)

Honestly, with it being located in 3 countries and 4 times zones, this thing is huge nightmare. To top it off, they are tying to grow a single strain of Bermuda for use at ALL stadiums...north to south for the duration of the tournament. Let's see how that pans out. Some of the US pitches haven't been the best of late.

Only reason I dont suggest detonating all the bowls is weather becomes a factor otherwise the amount of money lost by schools to keep that antiquated bullshit alive is astronomical. Most bowls schools lose money overall. It lines the pockets of bowl committees, coaches, athletic director etc but overall its a waste sharing all that money into so many pots. Conference revenue bowl share also shorts the best teams.

I really feel there should be a financial assessment required that isn't tied to the teams selling a massive amount of tickets that still shows schools will be profitable from attending. The combined conference allotment should only share the portion of funds left over after every schools attendance costs are accounted for. This prevents a team like Tech getting hosed if their bowl is in California rather than Carolina. The selection of who travels should be agreed upon across the conference so you also dont get teams sending more because they can squeeze it in. Belichicks girlfriend shouldn't travel on UNC's dime etc.

The assessment needs to also account for the travel not just of the team, coaches staff but the band, cheerleaders, Mascot and other staff to show profitability because these bowls enjoy protected non-profit status so should be forced to pay out the maximum amount possible.

I can't believe I am saying this, but Stephen A. Has a good take on this.

To summarize, in regards to the ACC lobbying for Miami>ND and ND not being in a conference:

"Everything you (Notre Dame) do, is done to create an advantage for you, and when the ACC mimicks this behavior you go on a national radio show and claim the ACC is doing irreparable damage to the relationship? That is a lot of nerve!"
