Thamel: VT Athletics adding $50m to budget

Link

"As for the jobs at UCLA and Virginia Tech, I've been told they're going to target experienced head coaches," Thamel reported on College GameDay. "Both schools need to market themselves as better jobs and show real financial commitment.

"At Virginia Tech, a source told me that by the end of the month they're expected to add nearly $50 million to the athletic department budget to show they can compete at the highest levels of the ACC."

Week 4 Other Games

Tonight we get Tulsa up early on Ok St and a Big 10 Snoozer of Iowa/Rutgers

Ranked Matchups
17 Texas Tech at 16 Utah
22 Auburn at 11 Oklahoma
9 Illinois at 19 Indiana

Cheering against Miami not that I expect it will work but they have 10 of the Top 25 Wide Receivers in the Class of 27 visiting this weekend among other top players.

Interested to see how Tilane at 13 Ole Miss goes this weekend. Should be a good one.

ACC adjusting schedule requirements to mandate ten P4 games

There will be a meeting Monday of all Athletic Directors to determine if this means an 8 ACC + 2 OOC or 9 ACC + 1 OOC Format. It is believed the majority are leaning towards the 9 + 1 Format to reduce scheduling issues.

As the Hokies have experienced multiple times in the last twenty years with marquee matchup agreements getting delayed or outright cancelled I would expect the Hokies to vote for 9 + 1. If that happens who would we want in our rotation of OOC games?

Does a 9+1 limit matchups and potentially water down further how the ACC is viewed from the outside?

John Rocovich, $200mm annual budget, and what's next

Can John Rocovich help lead this recovery of Virginia Tech Football? I have heard that he was instrumental as rector in his past term (2002-2004)? How aggressive will he be in helping restructure the athletic department from ground up?

I think many of us can agree that Pry underperformed with the current $144mm annual budget and hopefully we can sort things and get the right personnel to punch above weight with current resources - what we had with Beamer for decades. But on the flipside, how fast/ likely is it that the current leaders can secure a $200mm annual budget that Babcock suggests can keep us competitive?

The Argument for Tyson Helton to be the next VT Football Coach

I'm pretty confident that the next 10 weeks will be pretty bleak for Virginia Tech football, so in order to embrace a positive outlook, I'm going to (hopefully) put out a couple forum posts to highlight potential coaches who I would be really excited for. I'm going to skip over Sumroll and Golish because they're on everyone's board, and instead focus on some lesser-known candidates.

This week: Tyson Helton

NCAA abolishing Spring Transfer Portal

NCAA has not set all the specifics for the Winter Portal but have decided to get rid of the Spring Portal....at least until they lose a lawsuit.

It sounds like significant changes are coming to the Winter Portal window as well.

Looking Back to Learn About What to Question in the Future

I've been going through all the writers that I trust for the layout of what went wrong at VT and what the new market and search will look like over the past few days like many folks I suspect. Steven Godfrey mentioned something that made me think about the fumbling replacement coordinator and S&C search that was conducted over the off-season: Agents reported to him that there were multiple coaches that were contacted who didn't want to uproot and move to Blacksburg for just a year. That's why the Siefkies hire came weeks after Marve was let go. Some posters suspected we were taking swings at Knowles before Penn State landed him even then. The market knew that we were likely going to face a complete rebuild after 2024.

Pry Fallout - Prepare to get Portaled hard in the next couple weeks

Basically, the entire roster is now eligible to transfer out for the next 30 days starting on Monday. If they do it this week, they are eligible to redshirt this season at their new school.

Apparently, rock bottom is lined in Hokie Stone

Genuinely, this is the worst football program in the country right now. We are going to get boat raced by almost everyone on the schedule, and that's assuming we can put up a fight against Wofford, and that's really not a sure thing at this point. And did I come up with that headline?

Nope!

Pry's Coaching = F**king Garbage

Down 21 to ODU and not a lack of urgency with this staff.

Bad coaching, bad playcalling, and no answers to how to respond to the other team on either side of the ball.

This bum needs to leave Lans Stadium unemployed.

The fanbase doesn't deserve this.
