I intended to rewatch 1-7, but never got around to it, which is maybe why I was able to enjoy this season more than some; the writing from the first 7 season wasn't so fresh in my mind, lol.

Now that it is all said and done, I'm going to give it some time then rewatch it all

Never seen any of Lost, so no input there. I would agree with your second point.

I'll say this, immediately after the episode, I felt very disappointed in it. 12 hours later, I am more okay with it. While I don't understand why there is still a Castle Black to man, Jon obviously isn't staying there; appears to be going to live (maybe lead) the free folk north of the wall; got Sansa as Queen of the North; Bran in KL; and Arya sailing under the Stark flag to discover what is West of Westeros.

Like I mentioned in the other thread; I never went into an episode looking for holes to punch in the story; I just watched to be entertained, and it was definitely entertaining if you aren't searching for something to hate about it.

Worse ending to a great show: GoT or Dexter?

Despite the recency of GoT, I think I still have to maintain that the ending of Dexter was far worse

For a minute there, I thought they were ending the show with that shot around the table with Tyrion, Bronn, Sam and Davos (if I remember correctly)...I could feel my blood beginning to boil

Or maybe we would still be bad and irrelevant.

That's why I said maybe.

I really don't care about the optics of the post. It had nothing to do with piling on Buzz or being salty that he is gone. I am truly more excited for our future now under Young than the idea of moving forward with Buzz, always wondering when he is jumping ship. If that's piling on or being salty, then I don't understand the meaning of those two phrases.

Buzz did great things in a short amount of time with our team, then acted as he has a reputation for acting. So far Mike Young seems to be the real deal. I have no doubt he will have us back within a year or two, and will be better for the program in the long term.

And if it doesn't happen, I'll be dissapointed for Young. He seems like a truly great guy, who loves VT and who wants to be here.

TLDNR:

Knowing what we know now about him (and knew at the time of his hiring, but we tried to convince ourselves otherwise), it's hard not to wonder where the program would be if we had gotten Young instead of Williams back in '14.

Considering the level of success that we had in that era, the hire would have met expectations, doubtful that many folks would have been disappointed (if they're realistic). I think within a few years time, Young will have us better off than Williams did. We could gotten this train rolling 5 years ago if we hadn't jumped out of our league for Williams.

Maybe

Except Varys and Martha, the girl he was discussing this with, were at Dragonstone with Daenerys, right?

I don't think the little girl hopped on a boat, traveled across Blackwater Bay, snuck into King's Landing, snuck to the Red Keep, failed; got out of King's Landing, traveled back across Blackwater Bay to Dragonstone to tell Varys she failed, and he said, good try, go back across Blackwater Bay, sneak back into King's Landing and the Red Keep, and try again at dinner time.

edit: Now I remember the shot you're referencing, I think that came well after this exchange with Varys, right?

edit #2: Looks like you edited yours while I was typing my response, looks like we're on the same page

I wasn't intending to imply they wouldn't have had good seasons with JJ, I was a JJ fan from day 1, but it's just one of those things we'll never know. Obviously, the entire season would have been different with JJ under center, maybe better, maybe worse

I heard this, but it didn't register when first watching the episode....Varys was trying to poison Daenerys

Varys: "Nothing?"

Girl: "She won't eat."

Varys: "We'll try again at supper."

Girl: "I think they're watching me."

Varys: "Who?"

Girl: "Her soldiers."

Varys: "Of course they are. That's their job. What have I told you, Martha?"

Girl: "The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward."

Varys: "Go on. They'll be missing you in the kitchen."

It looks nice, cool idea; but I'm having trouble visualizing the location, and can't find a damn address anywhere on their site. Is this the property over around Clay St.?

edit - yes it is. Finally found the concept map.

Once we committed to redshirting Quincy, I would say no amount of losses would have justified burning his redshirt on a lost season.

Not sure on Hooker, would it have been a decision more about his development, or would it have been "Maybe he can win us more games?"

Correct, according to the showrunners, Daenerys' decision was spur of the moment.

"But in the episode's behind-the-scenes featurette, Benioff and Weiss reveal that her decision was even more abrupt than it seems. They say Dany spontaneously decided to destroy the city when she saw the Red Keep, the King's Landing castle built by the Targaryens.

"I don't think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did," Weiss says. "And then she sees the Red Keep, which is, to her, the home that her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago. It's in that moment, on the walls of King's Landing, when she's looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal."

Do people watch the little behind the scenes thing after the episode? Cause I feel like those answer a lot of the things we debate about on here.

"When she arrives in King's Landing, she truly believes the people will take up arms against Cersei and welcome her as the rightful heir. They don't. They surrender, but they aren't glad to see her, and they don't fight for her. Maybe her sudden decision to "make it personal" isn't because Jon rejected her or because the North is about to. Maybe it's because she's spent all this time fighting for people she thought should love her, and when she realizes they never will, she's willing to let their world burn to punish them."

Daenerys decision

Willis.

Exhibit A:

Yes, he threw the pick, but without that, two streaks might have ended that day.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not saying he is MVP because of this play. I'm saying, coming into the year as a back-up QB, getting to call after JJ went down, and to play with the heart and intensity that he did. I think he exceeded my expectations and don't know if we have the season we did with anyone else under center, even JJ

Budget was not a factor. The showrunners themselves have confirmed that HBO wanted to give them whatever resources necessary to end it the right way, even if that meant 5 more seasons. This was before season 7, the show runners more or less said -nope, 13 more episodes, that's it.- That is what forced the different writing style, as described in the twitter thread embedded above - they had a finite number of hours to wrap everything up.

edit - they did not say 13 more episodes, they said 73 hours, which I guess is about what seasons 7 & 8 come to
