The way the law reads that Student Fees can only be 20% of the Athletic Budget.
Raise the budget to the $200M Whit requested then they could have fees at $40M rather than the roughly $22M I think they got this year. That still trails JMU significantly ($49M since law doesn't apply to them) but do I trust Whit and Merryman to manage $200M with actual progress? ABSO-F*CKING-LUTELY NOT
Nah, the system is fair, its more fair than its ever been because at least now the money is over the table and transparent.
Preach!!!
There are 5 things I think we should be doing NOW:
- Hokie Club needs leadership from a proven fundraiser.
- Student fees should be raised to match UVA/JMU
- VA lawmakers need to be lobbied to change laws around auxiliary profit/athletics
- AAU membership is a must. Say what you will, but this makes us more attractive to P2 presidents.
- Need back channel outreach with P2 conferences
With the exception of the first bullet, all of these things are completely outside of Whit's control; they're all Pres. Sands/BoV things.
I don't feel strongly that Whit needs to be kept, but I'm not sure how much of an improvement we'll see with an upgrade at AD.
Well shit, now you made me sit down and have a good cry....
I've been following this program since before you were born and have been an eternal optimist full of hope for the glory of yesteryear. Not even the glory of championships, but just feeling good after a game and a season. Just to be relevant in the CFB universe.
My well also ran dry Saturday night.
I pondered this revelation during my 14-hour drive back to Florida yesterday. Yes, I'm the guy who drove to VA (while my wife flew) in order to bring all of our tailgating gear - used to love tailgating as much as the game. But now, it's the tailgating that brings me joy. Hell, should've stayed in the parking lot Saturday! I can set up a canopy, tables of fancy food, and a cooler of cold ones at the beach and have a great day without the drive, time, and expense that gets rewarded with a kick in the teeth (well, teeth might be too kind).
The optimist in me still believes the well can be recharged, but not without wholesale changes. Those have to start now.
There is zero evidence that anything can be done to salvage this season. Let's not prolong the agony and completely lose what's left of the fan base. If changes will be made at the end of the season anyway - make them now.
And even with that said, I'd still take that job over VT because a smaller portion of the budget at Purdue is larger than whatever the hell you'd get here
Yep, I'm fully on board with boycotting until things improve. And if that means we close up shop and there is no more VT sports, then at least we aren't fooling ourselves anymore.
IMHO the rot became visible back in the days of the infamous Jason From Arlington phone call where he was told he was out of whack for pointing out the trend that anyone with a brain stem and retina could detect. Think where this program would be if we had not signed Tyrod and he hadn't stayed all 4 years. That was in the thick of the weakest 10-win seasons anyone ever saw, and then once Tyrod was gone the drop-off became more obvious. We now have a 15-year-old (longer if not for Tyrod) tradition of complacency instead of winning. I just don't even care anymore, due to self-preservation if nothing else. One can only take so much Norvasc.
Purdue has a basketball program that makes a frustrating football season worth it.
That might be a con for a major football coach. Means you have to share House dollars with basketball players.
I mean, I guess we'll see how the rest of the season goes but not being able to compete with the P2, the given that it is, is not the same as not being able to compete with everybody else. Right now, my confidence that this program can compete even with their peers is near enough to 0. Re-arranging deck chairs, maybe, but I'd rather have a coach who can keep us competitive with other ACC schools even if we can't hold the SEC/B1G's jockstraps. VT is a complete pushover of a football team right now. That is largely Whit/Pry's doing. Get rid of those guys and reboot. There's always a chance that things will get worse, sure, but you're certainly not getting better with them so you have to take that chance. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
We're gonna sit on the pot straight through the tingly leg feeling until our legs turn black and fall off.
If you want play for full stadiums and win in the ACC, go to VT. If you want to make a shit ton of money to lose and play in empty stadiums (no judgement, truly) go to a bottom 4 B10.
At this point all of them are better jobs. Northwestern is about to open a brand new stadium, Rutgers at least attempts to try every once in a while, and Purdue has a basketball program that makes a frustrating football season worth it.
VT has an administration that penny pinches, absolutely no alignment on the importance of revenue sports and facilities that are rapidly growing more and more outdated by the year.
Unfortunately I don't think VT is capable of doing either. We aren't capable of making that big gamble, that world-changing decision we need to get back in the race. We also are not capable of admitting we screwed up royally, so let's close up shop. I've been at the university for a decently long time now, and I have seen administration paper over programs that run in the red time and time again, because it is just too embarrassing for someone to say "this didn't work, let's give up."
I think we'll continue to stagnate under the auspices of "trying to figure things out" or "we'll try harder next time", and in the meantime, to quote Randy Quaid, we'll just end up keep looking like a bunch of monkeys trying to fuck a football.
I absolutely love the Hokie fanbase in how loyal & passionate they have been through this downturn, but it is time they need to wake up and stop propping up this shitty excuse for an athletic department/football program. Stop donating, stop attending games, stop watching on TV. Until the revenue craters, these people will continue to be able to keep their jobs, kicking the can down the road with the hopes that tomorrow will be a better day.
we are just not going to be resourced in a way that is competitive with the P2, maybe ever.
This is why it's difficult for me to engage with the coaching candidates thread. Without the resources to truly compete, replacing Pry would just feel like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic to me.
Yeah, that fall off has been some combination of negligent and tragic.
Yes, paraphrasing a bit, but the comparison was to bottom crust BIG Ten jobs like Maryland (since Alex is a UMD alum). I expanded that to the bottom 4 of the BIG. So to be specific, VT probably better than Maryland as a job, but the argument still stands about the other 3 bottom run jobs in the BIG, which would be what, Purdue, Northwestern, and Rutgers?
Again, all reasons for Whit to be absolutely shitcanned today. He oversaw the football program going from what was arguably the top job on the market when Frank retired to being something that might barely eek out being a top half FBS job. Just a shameful performance
Preach it brother
Unfortunately, I fear it will fall on deaf ears. This administration has made it abundantly clear that they either don't care about football or are completely clueless how to make football work in this environment. Perhaps (probably?) both.
VT football as we knew it is long gone. We are entering a phase in the life cycle where we are going to be terrible for decades. Almost everyone goes through this. We just managed to have absolutely impeccable timing. We had a galactic rise under Beamer from small independent to top dog in a Power Conference and now we're just experiencing the painful meteoric fall back to the bottom. IIWII. I'm glad I was at Tech when the team was good. I don't think the football team is going to win a trophy again in my lifetime. I hope I'm wrong.
As a program, not this year's team.
They also mention VT's place in the run of "good jobs" schools and argue, correctly I feel, that VT is no longer a better destination than something like a bottom quartile BIG job
That's not what they said... they asked "is VT a better job than UMD" and said (paraphrasing) "probably, but not definitely"
They also said that VT is definitely not a top 30 job anymore, but also easily inside the top 50/60.
This (likely) upcoming coaching search is going to be eye opening
That extra money is rapidly becoming the norm everywhere. These colleges are acting like a cartel, everyone is upping rates at the exact same time so that the consumers have no choice but to pay them. And they're only doing it to enrich themselves.
But the kicker is, if you are one of the schools who doesn't up your rates to play along, you're going to fall so far behind so quickly that you might as well go out of business.
Yeah I can't afford that.
Other daughter is looking hard at VT.
An extra 20k is just not doable.
Yeah, they didn't mind doing it Home and Away.
Yep, the spin cycle will eventually result in a division of the sport that has maybe 20-ish teams in it that are willing and able to sustainably fund top tier football teams that are on resource parity with each other. That league will be like the NFL where there's a lot of 7-5 and 5-7 teams and someone who wins 8 games is a standout leader with the inside track for their championship. Is that what people want to watch? Maybe?
But as an alum of a school that's not in that Top 20-ish why would I care? That's the big question for me and the thing that will, at some point, burst that bubble. Contrary to all the MBA-think out there the line cannot always go up. There is a limit, and I'm not going to waste a minute of my day watching anOSU play Texas over and over again because it doesn't affect me and the division that my team competes in.
VT is stuck solidly in the middle in that Top 50 floor, Top 30 ceiling way.
I wish this was true, but we're currently nowhere near the top 50. Top 80 maybe.

Someone buy some really good cigars and reward JC Price with one after every win!
