CMY runs a motion offense. Not unlike Bob Knight did in 1976. The difference is the 3 point line of course. Basically you split the court in 2 on either side of the lane.. players without the ball move based on the initial entry /penetration - as in the reverse side. You pass the ball and screen until you find the open shooter. Knock down shots and it works. Tony's system is a defensive system- the pack line- where you contest everything and force it inside to a subsequent highly contested shot and easy rebound. The pack line works when you have elite defenders that know where the help is, and refs that don't call bullshit touch fouls. The reason Tony's offense is like watching paint dry is that the other team uses the shot clock trying to get a good look, so possessions are minimal. He wins with defense, not offense. His very best teams had a guy that could get his own shot on offense and a couple top level 3 ball shooters.

But re: the perception that NIL money was diverted from #Hokies basketball to football last year: "No. That's what you get for reading social media."

This makes Whit look incompetent. I can understand that funds are limited and have to be prioritized. But how can you tell us that 'underestimate' the amount of money that we needed, but also tell us that there wasn't a tradeoff to fund football? Did donors offer you $5m extra and you said 'nah, we good??'

Respectfully, assuming the department is working within a NIL budget, if they underspent on basketball, what else could that mean other than either (a) the funds were diverted to FB (or elsewhere) or (b) they left funds unspent. I doubt it was the latter.— Pete (@PMGingrich) March 26, 2025

Pry can find talent, he can't maximize it. Hoping new coordinators fix the problem.

I kinda feel like this season put that "Young doesn't play young guys" to bed. If you look at total minutes played this season, Tyler Johnson was second on the team. Hammond is a little further down, but still averaged 20 minutes a game. The only freshman who didn't play was Jones, and he was coming off a major knee injury.

Another benefit of the "NIL agent"....it makes in-season tampering so much easier.

I like Mike Young and think he is a great coach but I'm not sure that jumping into the portal again with our bag of money is going to solve things.

Mike Young likes to sit younger players until they learn his system. That worked fine pre-NIL. Now, no one is going to want to sit on the bench a year and not play.

It is the same issue Tony Bennett had. If you have a system that takes a season or more to learn, that is not going to work in the NIL ERA.

Related but don't know if anybody saw Andy Bitter's twitter thread on his interview with Whit recently. Whit says apparently they just misjudged the market for basketball NIL. I'm so tired of hearing excuses from Whit while he drives our programs further into the ground. It's literally his job to figure these things out, and I think just about anyone could have seen that the funding level was far below par for even the ACC.

We need a new AD in a bad way if we are ever going to be seriously competitive again. Kudos for CMY for hanging in there when he has been left out to dry.
