Me, watching it unfold:
I miss watching him. When he was at Tech, I never remember seeing him without a helmet and the old number 4 on his chest, so it's kind of weird watching a bald guy with a big beard in the interview. He does seem to have the attitude you'd like to see in a coach, although in the old days wasn't he one of the constant trash talkers to opponents during a game (correct me if I'm wrong here).

all the QBs have thrown some pretty deep balls. As far as the mechanics, I think Evans is still the fastest and most fluid going through his mesh point to read. Jackson and Click have both impressed me. Motley had a couple nice plays, but one or two still look like slow progressions where he is late on the throw.
Kudos to Joe's editorial vision. He did this the right way.
Agreed- pretty disgusted with the source and the reporters for not using their discretion and just not reporting it. But, because information and access is pretty choked off, they were too busy falling all over themselves to be the first to add an extra layer to the story instead of determining if they SHOULD report it. And, there is the whole issue that drug test results are likely HIPAA-protected data, and "the source" pulls a double whammy by throwing the kid under the bus WHILE avoiding the consequence of the violation of FEDERAL LAW. I am absolutely pissed off about this. I am ambivalent about the kid leaving the program, but there was absolutely no reason to throw an anchor around his neck on the way out.
Also, I didn't once contribute to any speculation of Lawson transferring even though I heard it was a possibility many months ago. Don't put that evil on me.
I didn't mean you specifically, but it's part & parcel of the wider ranging debate & butt-hurt over the issue. Point being, speculation is speculation.
Accepting your interpretation of VT's statement for the sake of argument, I would just say the blame was appropriately targeted. VT didn't sell him drugs.
It's not like he's the first athlete from a troubled background at tech. With few exceptions, Beamer and his support staff did a tremendous job instilling grown-up values in their players. I have no reason to think Fuente is going to be any different. So I think it's fair to say that Lawson was the exception to the rule, and perhaps, again taking your interpretation for the sake of argument, Fuente may have thought that it would be best for Lawson to have to own his personal failure.
If that has negative impacts on recruiting, well so what?
I remember the early Beamer years, when the athletes were out of control in a lot of ways. There was a whole lot of smoke covered up by campus police and an compliant town p.d. I don't want to return to anything approaching that.
Job number one of any learning institution's faculty & staff is to host an evirnoment aimed towards young men & women transitioning to the real world, with all its pitfalls, responsibilities & rules. It sounds like Lawson wasn't interested, and if other highly touted athletes aren't interested in that, it's better if they don't come here. We don't have the resources of the SEC or the compliant local p.d. anymore like you might find in other areas (cough FSU cough) to be able to cater to the whims of athletes who refuse to fulfill their obligations to the team, the university & the community.
So...
"See this, if you don't work out there, it's you're fault and you'll get tossed," said coach Joe.
Doesn't matter to me. Because it is a lie.
Yes it makes it a little more difficult, but I'm willing to accept that. Our recruiting can try to counter this in any of their pitches by saying "If you come to V.T., abide by the rules of the team and the laws of the community, this is the place for you. If you mess up, own your mistakes, and work hard to fix them, this is the place for you, because making mistakes is part of life. We are family here, and we will help you through anything so long as you are willing."
I think your way would also happen to lead to negative recruiting. If we start getting a trickle of problem athletes, and they are being let go with no reason given, it can also be spun by recruiters. "Yeah, you could go to VT, but they might let you go just to free up space on their scholarships." Or any other reason they care to make up.
You can't fight lies in the dark. The reason Lawson was going to face suspension and decided to leave is out there for any prospective recruit to discover or even be led to if it is felt to be needed.
I just don't get why A) he took part in day 1 of practice B) he didn't leave as soon as summer classes were over (unless they aren't over yet?)

I volunteered during "time of peace" for a relatively safe job on an aircraft carrier, after failing out of JMU. The day I graduated boot camp the USS Cole was attacked, and a year later was 9/11.
My biggest fear has been getting kidnapped on a port call. I genuinely feel any of my experiences pale in comparison to those guys placed in the line of fire in the jungle, with little or no choice, or sitting at home waiting for their number to be up.
No ill will at all. But, if you understand the current climate and frequency of transfers, you could tell this was coming going back to the spring. It was just a matter of time. I hope the kid finds the right fit, because he does have talent and I have not heard anyone say he is a bad guy.
Yeah and they didn't come back from commercial until after he committed :/ oh well, he's a Hokie!
