On my end, I spent 5 of the last 6 years in SEC country wondering how in the world players from the conference were able to play and be stars despite multiple infractions that only netted them slaps on wrists.
You mention Bobby Bowden, I recall Peter Warrick's plea deal that allowed him to torch us.
Now, Lawson didn't do high-profile dumb things like our former kicker whose initials are C and J, but it just goes to prove that some players don't wanna be reached.

Bobby Bowden took in so many guys who needed life-level leadership and created a lot of success where there were few other avenues for a stable life.
In Dwayne's case, Virginia Tech was unable to do the same.
From a team/reputation perspective, I think this is the best choice.
But dammit if I would hope our school would be able to bridge that gap.

Yeah that's me.
For what's it's worth, they threw Lawson under the bus with the release (Fuente quote), and leaking to media that he failed the drug tests.
Even if a kid is a dope, there's no advantage at all in blaming him. Release a generic "mutually parted ways" statement and wish the kid the best.
Ha, my bad. Thought it was a pretty obvious "sometimes the ACC isn't far enough" line. :)
