Don't look now, but we are over 45%, I almost feel bad for UNCheat, they never even saw it coming... I am on a mission.
Hard to take a stand when the odds are overwhelming. Discretion is the better part of valor, my friend.
This makes me think about 2009 and now I haz sads.
Other than people's predictions going into VT-OSU in the Shoe, I'm not sure there's anything else in your post that we would disagree with here.
You were pretty spot on for an outsider's view (not meant to be backhanded). We have definitely struggled with depth, particularly these last few seasons, and like you said that is directly related to some recruiting misses coupled with attrition from within the program (transfers, guys not making it, not developing). Having solid depth is certainly one of the big steps for any program to make that step into a legitimate and consistent contender.
I wonder if this will hurt the bees' OL recruiting, considering nothing they learn at the college level can be used in the pros
Not a problem. I'm sure Whit has already pocketed a replacement.
no, that's not what I meant. I have that html file loaded up on google docs. When I open the html file in chrome, it shows the survey just for blacksburg vs chapel hill. But when I try to link to it, google docs just pulls up the code instead of opening it like an html file. If I had my ftp program here, I'd throw it up on my domain and it would be fine, but I don't have access to that right now. I'm asking someone else to put that html file on their domain so we can link to it and make it easier to vote (without having to scroll down and load everything on the page).
it's in the NFL so they can still chop block all they want and get away with it
Sucks for GagTech! BWAA-HA-HA-HA-HAAA!!!
YAY, Free Recruiting!! Kind of like coach k on every flipping e$pn commercial ever during basketball season!
Leave the knees alone, Bees!
Important to note that, so far as I can tell, cut blocking remains legal.
I decided to peek back over here and see how you guys are doing. Looks like there is plenty of optimism for the new era.
This topic caught my eye. Part of me wants to say that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, but another part recognizes that perception has some importance because it affects recruiting, scheduling, etc.
I only know what my perceptions have been/are. But what are we talking about? VT as an institution, stadium atmosphere, fans, or football program? I only feel comfortable with talking about the football program. Those other things are the playground for trolls. It really irritates me when some fan's response to losing is, "Yeah, well I will tip you 5 bucks after you graduate when you deliver my pizza."
I'm old enough to have seen VT football go from obscurity to significance. That was essentially the Beamer Era. I think there was a lot of respect for Coach Beamer for doing that. My perception of VT rose when they started making some noise on the national stage, and I thought most of that was primarily due to recruiting some great athletes from the Tidewater Area. I also took note of some great players like Bruce Smith, Michael Vick, and all those DB's, among others. Still, I looked at them like a program that was solid, with the potential to be in the Top 10 in a given year, but not be there consistently. I gave them a 5% chance of going into Ohio Stadium and beating the Buckeyes... until they made me give them a 100% chance of doing that. After that, I had to modify my view to include the idea that there is enough in that program to beat anyone anywhere. However, while I think the level at which they have recruited and developed players allows them to compete at the highest levels, it has not allowed them to consistently have the kind of depth that allows them to cope with the attrition that comes with a football season. Fuente will have an opportunity to continue that, but his challenge in elevating the program (and its perception) will be to recruit and develop better depth. That's basically what I think. FWIW
I was in Bridgewater a couple of years ago eating in a local restaurant and some big dudes were at the adjoining table. From their conversation, it became clear that at least one of them was connected to the JMU softball program. They were laughing about Thomas and the Hokies, seemed to think we were doomed to perpetual mediocrity, and generally lording it over our program. I was by myself, hungry, and not a scrapper anyway, then add in the fact that they seemed to know a ton more about it than I did, so, I ate and left. Did I also mention that they were big? Anyway, I was uncomfortable hearing the critique, it hurts to hear VT being joked about. I personally don't know enough to be able to evaluate what our program's issues might be, but those guys seemed to really like us having Thomas at the helm.
Fantastic, I was hoping for this. And I was hoping he would be wearing a VT logo on his lapel and not some other lowly school.
Nah, I have always had pickups with manual trans and motorcycles. If you have all the manual controls and seat of the pants driving of a bike, especially the unusual configurations he has, a stick on a p/u is nothing.
This was an unnecessary plot event. If they wanted to do that, they should have had a different character drive the car. It was an unforced error.
I guess now that we're out of the NIT he's going to allow himself to watch the rest of the tournament. I remember him saying he didn't care about it at all leading up to the start of the NIT.
You tryin' to start a ruckus?
Edit, somehow forgot to hit the reply tab. Meant this as a reply to cds7c's Staley suggestion. My bad.
Maybe Buzz can lead the women's team, too?
Looks that way. Giving up unearned runs seems to be a disappointing characteristic of this team.
Kind of like what Oklahoma did to us in baseball a few years back?...
Allow me to play a little devil's advocate here: Any time you're talking about a college sports team and your argument is in any way, shape, or form of "lacking players" then the blame goes straight to the head coach. They are, ultimately, in charge of recruiting and, more importantly, developing those key players that make their respective teams successful. I realize that there are certain limitations that may hamper a coach (recent lack of success, poor history at a school, etc) but my point still stands.
Ultimately, I think we have a ceiling under Thomas and that we've hit it. Now we're faced with either being content to make NCAA regionals but do nothing at them OR do we want to make a change that could, potentially, have us actually winning games in the post-season?
Last season ended on a horrific slide that was painful to watch and this season started off with much of the same. Granted, they seem to have righted the ship now that ACC play has started but when you're 7-2 in conference and STILL have a losing record.......
Buzz Watch 2016 continues. Now you can watch him on the TV.
