I also agree with those think that SL has gotten some undue criticism and that given the pieces he's had to work with, he did a pretty admirable job and got VT in a position where someone like Fuente isn't starting with a bare cupboard..
But still, listen to what Loeffler says after games. When asked about certain plays, it's almost always something like "we had the right play for the defensive alignment". It's rarely, if ever, "we believe X and Y are what we are good at and we were going to establish them until they stopped it". Then listen to Bud Foster. He'll say some of the former (particularly when teams come out w/ different looks early), but in the end his MO is to stop the run. He says that not only after the game, but before it as well. There is no mystery about it. And more times than not, it's successful.
I've said from early on in Loeffler's tenure that he seemed far more interested in the chess match and trying to find the flaw's in the DC's game plan and/or play calling than in developing, refining and doing what VT was good at.
Now I'm not naive enough to think that you can simply do one or two things all game or that you completely ignore what the D is giving you. But it just seemed like his play calling was more counterpunching than leading -- reacting rather than acting, if you will. And it manifested itself in play calls that seemed to interrupt the flow of the offense at just the wrong time when it appeared that the offense was beginning to impose its will or when the dagger could have been put in their heart (think GT in 2014).
I heard Tennessee is volunteering to be the first sacrifice...

$2.25M? Any p5 school could pay that, especially considering how often those are negotiated. VT, Miami, USC'e, UVA, Mizzou---we could all handle a $2.25M buyout.
It's a moot point, he won't be leaving for a school that can't handle that buyout.

We'll see, I think they will do fine. It's a good program with a chance to succeed.
I guess we would need to categorize what is a good hire and a less than inspiring hire. For me, for UVA, a good hire is:
Mullen, Rhule, Brohm, Musgrave, Lazor
A less inspiring hire would be:
McNeil, Mack Brown, Schiano, Tedford, Diaco, Golden, Whithers, that guy at ODU
I'm not sure where to put Troy Calhoun, who seems like a distinct possibility for them.

I'm trying to figure out why I hate this move for ECU but love the Richt/Smart move for UGA. They seem similar, but are different.
With Richt, I don't think his next four years will be any better than his last four years. They've topped out. That's probably true with McNeil as well, they won't be better in the next four years than they have been in the last four years.
But the difference is that if you bring in Smart at UGA and he does exceed Richt's production, Smart is your coach in perputuity. He's an alum, coaching at one of the best jobs in the country. It's worth the risk for UGA.
At ECU, if Riley comes back and he exceeds what McNeil has done, then Riley is gone in two years, three tops. Then you are right back to looking for your next coach. And that's the best case scenario for ECU! Every other scenario is much worse....like not getting Riley or Riley not meeting McNeil's success rate.

However, lets think about what is going on in the coaching world in relation to who Chizik (the head football coach) actually is...
He is a great defensive coordinator, no one would argue that.
Outside of the one "outlier" year at Auburn, he has been a less than average head coach.
If he were close to being on his way out (and worthy of a HC job), I would think that he would, at the very least, be mentioned in relation to one of the many openings in the CFB world.
All that to say, I don't put a ton of stock in "the word on the street" either. But I also don't expect him to be out the door after next year. That means UNC will continue to be a thorn in the flesh as it relates to VT recruiting.
My read on that could be totally wrong. Just my two cents...
LOL the candidates that UVA thinks the deserve and the candidates they should actually be after are two different groups of people. I'm sure the leadership at UVA is delusional enough to believe they are a destination job for someone like Richt when in fact they should really be looking at the lower tier options....like Ruff.

I get that Beamer is a legend, but this is an upgrade on the offensive and special teams side, and the defensive side is the same.
The odds of success overall just went up.
