Obviously ice cream, since you have to combine pie and cake or put ice cream on either one to make them edible...
Over the last month or so I've been sampling more breweries and found Stone to be one of the better ones available at the local distributor, although I still have a few left to get through.
For my money, my favorite beer I've had during this 'tour' has been Stone Ruination.
Marvel fo life. Ride or die. Anyone watched the Jessica Jones show on Netflix? I'm pretty pumped for that, especially since they'll have Luke Cage too, but I'm waiting until I can get all the way through the Daredevil series. Life keeps getting in the way of me sitting on my ass watching tv. I think Daredevil has been really good...I always thought Spider-Man would be better as a tv show as well (now that they can do all the crazy special effects) than trying to have these giant ass movies where you're trying to compress 50 some years of plot development into 2 hour chunks. Especially since people take Spider-Man a lot more personally than I think we do a lot of comic book characters.
That said, I've seen significant chatter on here about how we should hire Bud as our head coach, or that we should do everything we can to retain him, and how that it would be criminal if neither happen.
Criminal, no. I would love to see Bud Foster on the VT staff for his entire coaching career in whatever role. I think he is best suited to being the DC, not the HC, and I think any head coaching candidate who is considered should at least entertain the idea that keeping Bud on staff, if the HC and Bud think they can work effectively together.
Having said that, I'll reiterate what I've said on other threads, which is that a new HC should have free reign to make and remake the staff to their liking. If they decide not to retain Bud, I would be disappointed for two reasons: one, because he's done so well for so long for us and my attachment to VT is, in part, due to his success, and, two, because he's ridiculously good at his job. He doesn't just fit our culture, he's in large part the definition of the culture that has been built. Losing that would suck, but it would be understandable from the business side of running a program and getting a new HC.
If a new HC comes in, brings a new DC, and our defense falls off the map, I'll be furious. If a new HC comes in and Bud is retained as DC, I'll be delighted before they even coach a single down together.
110% agreed that a great coordinator does not necessarily mean a great head coach. I wish Shannon would have been more successful in his role, but I might throw a few caveats in there. He had a revolving door of coordinators during his time there:
OC: Patrick Nix and Mark Whipple
DC: Tim Walton, Bill Young, and John Lovett
And I'm sure we can all remember that he had to deal with outside influences on his players like Nevin Shapiro. On top of that, his QB was Jacory Harris after Teddy Bridgewater left for Louisville.
I'd like to think that Shannon could have been way better if he had been able to overcome a little of that, but of course all of those difficulties are part of his responsibilities, too, so maybe he wasn't going to be able to be as good as I'd hoped he'd be.
I, unfortunately, have to confess, I went to a high school that bears the name Jefferson in Alexandria. Out of the ~430 students in my graduating class (2000), about 130 went to LOLUVA. Sorry, we were a pipeline.
Western. I guess "small" is relative to those massive NoVa high schools. We had about 220 in our graduating class. the way classes went, the huge majority if kids in honors/AP classes went to LOLUVa. Ironically I didn't even know all the folks who came to tech from my HS, but knew all the wahoos...
This sounds like a solid compromise. I'm in favor of it.

If Whit is handicapping the incoming coach to keep Bud that is a big big mistake.
I don't understand this at all in the sports business. Using my personal business as analogy, I (as Whit) run a company and i have a Managing Director (HC type) and also directors(coordinators) of different sections (offensive and defensive coordinator) of the business. I have had to hire and replace almost everyone at one time or another. And i tell you there has been zero times where i would consider letting a new Managing Director holistically swap out the existing management team for his/her own. zero times. Nor have I or would ever allow a director to do so with their asst management (position coaches).
I don't see keeping bud as a requirement to VT wrong at all. That's just smart business.
Honestly, I'd be more impressed if he took a bong rip in between kicks!
Sorry but I really don't think a hometown mentor is a requirement to not be in constant trouble, especially considering the situations that many athletes come from. As others have said, i hope he's got his life together but I don't feel sorry for him or think he got an unfair deal here.
