Thank you for once again being the voice of reason when it comes to our favorite team. A few TKPers are of the mentality that our D played poorly on Saturday. I think this is mainly due to these folks wanting to burn the whole program down and start from scratch (i.e. getting rid of Bud). While a complete personnel overhaul may or may not be the right thing to do, I think it is unfair for these people to criticize our defense when they had one of their best outings of the season. So again, thanks for telling us how it really is.
An offense that ACTUALLY scores on those possessions would have helped us win this game, though. The way Bud has the D playing, we could have easily won this game with a competent scoring offense. I get the theory of controlling the clock and playing keep away from UNC, limiting their possessions. Not to sound like Madden, but in order to win, we've got to be able to actually put some points on the board when we have the ball. If it weren't for some big turnovers and crucial stops by the D, we wouldn't have been able to force overtime at all down two scores.
Too many empty possessions and 3 and outs from our offense. That puts too much pressure on our D and doesn't give them time to rest, ultimately leading to breakdowns and scores from UNC. There's a good reason Bud wants an offense that will make something out of its possessions and put some points on the board.

400 yards is pretty good for a pro-style, ball-control offense with limited big-play capabilities.
It's really not that good, but we'll agree to disagree on that front. Also, this offense has plenty of experienced playmakers at this point. It's not the same team that was outmatched at the skill positions last year.

# | More Chatter About Memphis' Justin Fuente as next Virginia Tech Head Coach I completely agree with this. I don't trust any source until it comes straight from Whit. I keep remembering all the rumors with MBB coaching hires and then out of left field, Whit surprises us with Buzz. I hope this is what's happening here, and what rumors we're hearing now are coming from the other camp simply to increase their prospects. Just my opinion.... or may I'm doing too much wishful thinking.

I agree about Ohio State. And I wasn't too hung up on the no calls, or the final play review. No use focusing on it too much, can't retroactively change anything. It was just interesting to me because of how obvious it was. I was disappointed that we couldn't win this one in particular, the team played so hard, particularly the defense, so close to the storybook ending for Beamer in Lane. Still proud of how it was handled after. So many people staying to hear Beamer address the crowd and the team carrying him off the field, it was incredible.
Reminded me a lot of the 2001 Miami game. We lost, but as Bud would say, played our nutz off. At least there was no single scape-goat like Noel was that day.
I don't think the point is how many yards we got (or didn't get, depending on how you look at it) but more about how we consistently struggle with really basic stuff. When basic fundamentals can't be consistently executed by the players that has to fall back on the coaching. Something is seriously wrong if the players are struggling to execute. Mason is pointing out that the problem isn't play design or play calls so much as just flat out inconsistent play from the players. Coaches are tasked with teaching the players the basics and building on that. IF they can't get the players to get the basics right how can they build on that? It's going to breed inconsistencies. And that is supremely frustrating because we see flashes of what this offense could look like but we just can't put it all together enough to win games against formidable opponents.

Our offense isn't intended to be a run 'n gun 600 ypg scheme that maximizes # of possessions over length of possession... it's an offense based on the synergistic (with the defense) concept of marching deliberately down the field & scoring while keeping the ball away from the other team.
In this particular game we possessed the ball for 7 more minutes than UNC (33:26 vs 26:34). That's at least a couple of possessions they didn't get, and for a big-play offense like theirs, limiting the total number of opportunities is key. Big reason we were able to force over time.
edit - I should point out that I don't think Loeffler is a great OC, I just think you're using examples that don't really make the case that he's an average (or below average) OC all that well :P

It may seem like an old school look, but look at what we're wearing now. Ohio State has had a very similar uniform concept basically forever, and they don't seem to have any problem with them.

Thank you. I don't know what to make of it. I prefer to try and focus on the fact that the kids played a really tough football game. They deserved a better fate on Saturday. That is the most proud I have been of these kids after a loss in some time. I guarantee you, if the D had played like that vs Ohio State, VT would have won the game even with the eventual injury to Brewer.

OT kind of but at the new year I'm thinking about putting together a list of hotels, attractions, restaurants, etc. and posting it for people who are coming into Bristol from out of town. Might as well do it early because hotels between Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City, and Abingdon are sure to book up quickly, and the big Holiday Inn and Courtyard at exit 7 in Bristol are going to lodge both football teams.
