What happens when Defense doesn't decide games anymore.
Lets say UNC is held to 75% of their offensive avg by a great defense performance - 371 yards in the game (Their worst Offensive game of the year) and 32 points
most thru passing as the defense holds on to limit rushing
VT is held to its offensive avg by decent defense but a good final performance by brewer 370 yards and 30 points (See NC State game)
VT has scored 30+ pts against Furman Purdue and Duke*
The fact is we don't know where the breakdown in recruiting is. If we take it as a linear process, is it the position coaches not setting everything up correctly? Is it the coordinator failing to sell their side of the ball to the recruit? Or is it the Head Coach failing to finally close the recruit and get that final commitment?
Let's say Bud is permanently limited as a recruiter. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be able to make recruiting better as a HC. A big time offensive coordinator can have a drastic effect on recruiting (see: Chad Morris - Clemson) regardless of whether or not Bud can get the job done.
Push back: His recruiting and defensive scheme have potentially been the reason we can't recruit elite LB and defensive end talent.
Rebuttal: An increase in offensive production -> offensive recruiting heats up -> winning more games -> better defensive players will come to a school if they want to win + be a part of DBU/Bud Foster's elite defenses. Clemson's defensive was freaking horrible in 2011, but recruits saw that Clemson was on the rise and came to Clemson anyway, and not just offensive recruits.

If it wasn't for the absolutely dominant rebounding margin and the impressive effort on the offensive glass, we might have lost this game.
Well yeah, but that's a lot of credit to us and our efforts. Yep the free throws are killer, but honestly I'm just really pleased to see a team with the desire to attack the glass like we have the past two games. Everyone said rebounding was what cost us the game against AL St., but except for the offensive putback with like under 1:30, I thought we rebounded pretty well in that game.
It would be incredible to see a Hokie represent the US in the olympics. Looks like I'm going to have to start following triple jump trials.
Lets see we are facing an explosive play offense with a defense that leads the country in giving up explosive plays. That isn't good.
But lets hope that the GT game got everybody on board with the defense. Que the Moto Missile locking onto Williams.
If a 3 is guarding him, I like our chances down low. One thing we haven't had to really deal with yet is foul trouble, so it will be interesting to see how LeDay attacks when he's picked up a few fouls early into the second half. LeDay might be 6'7 or whatever they list him as, but he plays a lot bigger than that. Maybe I'm just drinking the cool aid, but he just seems like the new Jeff Allen except with a high motor. Only two games in and he's by far my favorite player to watch so far.

This team has no chance of being competitive in the ACC if their missing 50% of their free throws. I feel like they have been at the the line plenty through the first 2... sadly they couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.
It was nice to see them close this game out when Jacksonville State made their late run, since we didnt handle it in game 1.
I hope the two-a-days continue even after the win, lets just hope one of those sessions is spent entirely practicing from the charity stripe.
Also, play defense, especially on the perimeter. Through two, opponents are taking just under 30 attempts from 3, we're lucky the % has been low. If it wasn't for the absolutely dominant rebounding margin and the impressive effort on the offensive glass, we might have lost this game.

It looked empty on ESPN3. I was embarrassed when the announcers called it a good crowd. We are a football school. I would not want to play for a school that made that bad of a home crowd showing if I could go where people would appreciate me. Out of all the bad basketball I saw last night this bothered me the most. Whit should at lease do something to help it look good on TV. I know its a team I've never heard of on a Wednesday night, and I did not get off work early to drive to Blacksburg to watch it, and we have been bad recently, but that looked really bad on TV.
I disagree. The only situation more awkward for the locker room than the one we're in now is if Whit anoints Bud as Beamer's successor before the end of the season. It's one thing to have the AD say your job is not secure. It's a completely different thing to have a fellow coach making that call. At least now everyone in the locker room can say they're in it together.
Memphis- both teams trying to rebound, I think the Memphis O wins this one.
Michigan State- 13.5 is a laughable line, and I think they'll win outright anyway.
Northwestern- line is too high. I don't think the spread ends up being more than 7 in either direction.
USC- hardest call on here
Oklahoma State- I can honestly see Baylor losing out.
TCU in a close shootout.

I have little to nothing to contribute to this thread other than that I was disappointed when this didn't say "Talkin' Bout the Noles."
As I said last night in the other thread, we have to improve our free throw shooting. We are leaving way to many points unclaimed. No team should shoot less than 75% as a whole.
Very impressed with Clarke and LeDay. Their production might slump off when we start playing more big guys but they have both been good so far.
Very unimpressed with Allen, he just wants to drive to the basket or shoot (and he misses way to much). He doesn't appear to be looking to pass to anybody else. Even if he is fouled, he has been missing the free throws. A guard has to make them!
Buzz appeared more fired up last night than at the first game.
I agree with this. again. weird.
either way, really. If Bud stays Loeffler probably has a shot at staying. If Bud leaves, more likely than not, it's due to the fact a new HC is coming in and the chances of that new HC being offensive minded are pretty good. In that scenario, I don't see anywhere for Loeffler to fit in. In my honest opinion, I think both will be gone next year. It will be weird not having Foster around but I think it's something we'll have to come to terms with.
Blackshear can drain them too, may not have seemed apparent last night but thats what the scouting reports say.
Outside shooting is a definite concern, so its defending the 3. Way too many open looks for JState last night.
If anyone fits the Buzz Williams protege turned NBA contributor, its Chris Clarke.. high motor, undersized forward, good nose for the ball, and he fearlessly attacks the rim. Him and Robinson will be a fun combo over the next few years.
If Bud was going to be the HC, he would be the HC by now. He made his pitch last year. After that, Whit outlined that he was looking for better offense and better recruiting. That's pretty clear.
Believe me, I understand how huge of a difference it's been without those three all year. I posted several times last year about how I thought everyone was underestimating the effect losing Jarrett and Bonner would have. That said, I think Foster can scheme effectively to limit this offense. I would agree with both of you though in thinking we will need a solid offensive showing to win this game. I'm thinking we need to score 30+ as well. But who knows, after all this talk and the way we sometimes play opposite of tendency (Duke game should have been low scoring, turned into a shootout) watch this game be some inexplicable low-scoring defensive struggle.
