because while, not great destinations, at least ACC fans could drive there. It's all about putting butts in seats and making folks shell out for a plane ticket is a sure fire way to ensure a small crowd.
Miami in '95, we capped off the season beating Texas in the Sugar Bowl. That was the year for most VT fans.
In 1986 there was a win against NCST in the Peach Bowl.
I disagree, Harrison Smith is by far the best player on the Vikings defense.
I want to know why the ACC has bowls in Shreveport and Detroit while the MAC has one in the Bahamas!
Hopefully I will get to see that! Living in Ohio I am well exposed to this fanbase of whom you speak. I wasn't even allowed to mention that game after we won ONE year in a row.

Times have changed though. We are in the a media frenzy era where everything is projected over wins and losses and everything is outed into the public spectrum. I don't expect him to last too much longer.
The perception of our conference will keep us out of the playoff at 11-2. If we play anOSU close and they wipe the floor with the rest of the teams on their schedule I could see us getting in at 12-1.
Ohio State will lose to us.
The 1992 season also features prominently in Frank's book. The importance of that season and the AD's faith in Frank were huge in terms of VT history.
I think I read that they also only have 3 actual road games... 3
So it looks like:
A. Notre Dame only gets into the ACC bowl lineup if they aren't chosen for a NY6 game.
B. They share bowl revenue with the ACC if they take a non-NY6 bowl spot.
C. The ACC champ or next highest-ranked team is always guaranteed a NY6 spot
D. The ACC representative, if displaced by a playoff game, will still be obligated to play the best team available out of ND, the Big Ten, or the SEC in another NY6 game.
E. Notre Dame receives 100% of the revenue if chosen for a NY6 game.
So if they are selected for a NY6 game, and they are ranked higher than the next best available Big Ten or SEC team, wouldn't we have to face ND in either the Peach or Fiesta if we win the ACC? My god, this is overly-complicated.

Stewart Mandel has been pumping up TAMU's chances a lot. Think one thing that helps them is that TAMU only leaves the state of Texas once before November 21st.
It would be really hard to see 2 teams from the same conference make it to the playoffs in my opinion.

Joe, any way we could make the default setting for non-new comments collapsed? Just trying to think of ways to make the mobile viewing experience better for the site. I usually read every comment, but I rarely read comments that aren't highlighted yellow unless I'm checking them for context on a yellow comment. If the grey comments were collapsed, I'd have the option to expand them if I wanted. This would make scrolling through the comments a heck of a lot faster, not to mention it wouldn't load all the gifs you'd already seen (or would it?). As it is, i usually ignore threads with lots of comments til I can make it to a computer and use your nifty 'N' functionality.
As always feel free to ignore the suggestion. For all I know, it's more trouble than it's worth.

I was there for every home game that year. Tech wasn't on tv much in those days, regardless of who we played, so the rest may have all been on the radio. It was a really tough year for this fan, and I remember having serious doubts about Coach Beamer at the end of it. Wasn't calling for his head, mind you, just wondered if he, or VT for that matter, was going to have what it would take to be relevant, ever, in the larger world of the college game. To say we exceeded expectations in that regard would be an understatement.
Sometimes you have to settle for magical moments.
I have been trying to remember the first time I began to look at VT as a legit football program. There was a high profile game against a #1ish team in the late 80's/early 90's, and the Hokies pulled that off in Blacksburg. Can anyone help me with the year and the opponent? For some reason I am thinking it was FSU, but VT wasn't in the ACC at the time. Maybe it was an OOC game or maybe I'm just confused.

I guess my method of trying to keep myself in check during the season is to temper my expectations beforehand (for instance, I find it extremely difficult to expect more than 8 wins out of this team) and then if I'm right (and we go 8-4) I'm okay with that. If I'm wrong and we go 6-6 then at least I wasn't expecting to win the ACC. If I'm wrong and we go 10-2 then I'll be pretty darn happy. That keeps me from getting over-hyped and thus overly distraught at our downfall but I don't lose the ability to show up and cheer my lungs to death until the clock reads 00:00. If we win, Great! If we lose, well, on to the next one.
My first thought was 1992? Why do we want to talk about that year?
Had no idea that team lost so many close games. That year was really last bad year of Tech football. Glad they hung onto Frank.
I'm pretty down on Duke this year. They have lost essentially everyone who make their resurgence possible, including a couple of high draft picks from last year's excellent o-line. Throw in losing your best player from a front-six that was already terrible last year, 8 of your top 11 players total from that area, one of your returning starters from the secondary, and an ostensibly tougher schedule that features teams that could exploit their defensive font, and I think Duke and UVA are the teams in the coastal that take a step back.
Wow. Yeah, in that bowl lineup you posted, it certainly doesn't say that can't happen. That would be an outrage. Screw ND, in that case. I guarantee there would be such an uproar they would be forced to join a conference.
Edit: I found an article about the ACC lineup from ESPN. It is kind of vague, but it looks like ND doesn't get into the ACC bowl lineup UNLESS they aren't chosen for a NY6 game. And it clearly says the ACC champ or next-highest ranked team if the champ is in the playoff will appear in either the Peach or Fiesta. So it doesn't appear ND could take the ACC's NY6 spot.

The MAC title game is in Detroit. The winner of that game gets to go to a bowl game in Detroit...
The losers go to the Bahamas... NCAA may want to sniff around these games to see if the kids are throwing it lol.
