yeah guys i wouldnt get your hopes up here. We dont have a good history (not really any history) of signing highly rated lineman, even when they are in state and we have great connections. Most of our great lineman werent even highly touted (gayle, hopkins, dadi, maddy, cornell brown, corey moore). For whatever reason we are able to pull in some highly rated qbs, rbs, and dbs. But when it comes to linemen, the SEC and FSU gobble them up.
I wonder how many posters here who are saying that Leal will not start in August, were also clamoring for him to start over LT just a few short months ago.

I would love to be a fly on the wall evaluating film with him for each of the players. I will feel bad for Leal if we end up starting a redshirt freshman or true freshman, but I want what is best for the team.
The idea sounds good but if he isn't ready, you risk doing much more harm than good. If you break their confidence, that player will never be the same. Also not a fan of sacrificing a season for development of a player.

Teller was a true freshman that weighed in the 270 range when get got here? He is tall but he wasn't DT ready and then he got moved. He is not a Nnadi, Brown, or Settle comparison.
The good news is that tOSU's defense has been much worse the last 2 years than it had been traditionally in the 2000's and their best corner is gone.
Bad news is they are loading up blue chip players on D.
And the nice thing going into this is we have an interesting stable to choose from:
Leal, Motley, Ford, Durkin, Mcmillian.
All with upsides and downsides and differences.
I would love to have some insight into Loeffler's mind/thought process during the next few months as he makes a determination.
I don't think McKenzie will be doing much in spring but he will be involved and learning which for the RB position I think is more important because the physical part is more natural. If he is 100% by fall camp, I wouldnt be surprised if he is in the mix.

Logan was a really weird case. He both allowed Loeffler to design an entire offense around him, and limited what he could actually do. As we have said Loeffler knew that he was severely limited by the offensive talent around Logan and so he made the decision to put everything on Logan's shoulders because it gave the team the best chance to win.
Conversely, if Ford can win the job we will see what Loeffler's offense really looks like. The talent may be young, but we do have the talent around him. And Ford's skill set caters to an efficiently run balanced offense. I normally wouldnt say that there was any chance of a Freshman starting, but Loeffler has shown that he is talented at developing specific parts of the playbook around a young players current ability. I believe that Ford will have a strong enough grasp of the playbook to be field ready. It will all come down to his timing and presence in the pocket in the spring and early fall. The only problem is that September game against tOSU looms and that would be a hell of a thing for a Freshman QB.
I actually expect a more efficient QB than we had the last 2 years. I think these guys will play within themselves more. They will have much better weapons, I think the running game will be better, and I think the QB won't be asked to do as much. The numbers might not be there but the efficiency at the position I think will be better and that means longer drives, more points, more wins.
I think having Ford in the program for the spring is bigger than many people think. Spring ball is where development takes place. It is more important from a new player standpoint than fall camp. They learn more in the spring, then they get to practice what they learned all summer. He will get live game speed reps with the system which is HUGE to have. He can work with Leoffler, he can learn the system in person and already is I am sure.
Getting him in early puts him ahead of Durkin and McMillian. It also allows him to prove himself against Motley and Leal early.
That leaves so many questions. Just a couple for now.
If we had a dream team of DL. Take Nandi, Hand and add it to our class this year. How would that DL perform in college? How would that DL look stat wise in college? How prepared would that team be for the NFL? How high would those guys get drafted? How would all that change if they played in an NFL like situation.
Just as on the O-Line there are ways to build a team with guys that are not complete players. Why hasn't Bud's scheme been picked up in the NFL as a way to build an awesome defense more cheaply? Then you could overspend on OL, QBs, etc?
The knocks we've discussed aren't the only ones. Such as: If you're a big DE, you'll be forced to play DT at VT. If you're a tall DT at VT, your pad level will get you pushed to the OL or worse you'll never see the field.
Wish I knew the answers. Like another poster above I have to think its a little overblown. If you get NFL ready talent in and force it through the system and it gets drafted this system will look just as good as any other. But I have no idea whether that is correct. Like Nicholson said, not sure I can handle the truth. Perhaps I should just live in blissful oblivion.

Every fan base has idiots, this is nothing unique to VT. As a whole I will continue to argue that our fans are more patient than most other fan bases when it comes to "calling for heads"

The new guys are undersized to play right now for the most part. He will have guys to work with down the road but they are coming in at 260-280 with the exception of Pfaff. He has some guys to work with in McGlaughlin (spelling), Faris, Teller, Conte, Wang (played well at center), Smith, Benedict, Gibson. We have some athletic guys there and I think there will be an improvement this year. I do think Marshawn will help the running game too.

We wouldn't have needed additional scholarships due to the kids that count against last years numbers for coming in early.
