PJ and Beamer exchanged words through the media a few years ago. Beamer said that chop blocking is dangerous and does like it. PJ responded with something to the effect of 'He's just whining becomes his team loss'. The two have since patched it up.
Bowden (similar to Spurrier) kind of has a reputation of being a bit of a politician. He often played the media and sort of played his school and put jimbo in an awkward position a few years ago.
To be a head coach you have to be extremely competitive. Ask any former athlete; it's hard to turn the competitive focus on/off. This is why the best coaches, athletes, CEOs, politicians, etc. often come off as 'douchebags'. They want to win, and the media always seems to capture them in the middle of their battles. When they lose, they show emotion and people think their sore losers. When they win, they show emotion and they look cocky/arrogant. It's really a lose/lose for any head coach, unless they go out of their way to craft an image for themselves. Even then, they look fake.
the one thing Petrino has that none of those guys have is a reputation for the type of behavior that gets people fired and embarrasses an organization.
Regarding Petrino, he had a problem staying loyal to his significant other, but 50% of Americans also do. By hiring him, UL has essentially calculated a risk/reward; they believe that Petrino will bring effective results at an acceptable cost. While I wouldn't want my kid to play for him, there's thousands of high school athletes that would jump at the opportunity.
Another side-topic: choosing when to leave in college athletics is tough. Unless you take off four recruiting cycles, you're always going to be 'lying to your kids'. What if you want to advance your career? What if your board with your job and want a change? What if your offered more money elsewhere? While I think a college coach should ALWAYS wait until the offseason to change jobs (cough, cough BRIAN KELLY), other situations are often grey.
I don't think there's an issue with the recruiting strategy. Someone (I want to say either TSL or maybe Bitter) pointed out a little while ago that our 6-hour radius, while also making it easier for parents/friends to come to games and for players to get home, etc., also encompasses something like 40-60% of the US population. I'm just going off memory here, so if anyone gets the real number, please share. Still, it's a huge area, in terms of area and population, to recruit from.

Will be very dependent on Sr Bowl and combine. The kid has left the building, can't we all just cheer for him? He will be fine. If he finds the right situation I think he'll surprise on the upside. Glennon started and didn't play half bad this year. NFL needs strong armed kids willing to stick to a plan, lead, and play hard. Thats LT3 to a T.

Please don't make generalizations that are completely subjective. It is a poor reflection on the people of this site.
Al Golden is a class act and a stand up individual. While I will never like Miami, I do believe he is the right person to clean that program up and has taken the steps to do so. I would welcome him in Blacksburg, post CFB, if it came down to it.
Like I posted before - if you lay out a strategy to do all those things, connect it to success, and selling it to the contributers, you can generate a lot more revenue. But you've layed out several things that Frank has no intention of doing regardless of budget.
As it relates to recruiting, as Weaver says, Frank gets the resources he asks for. His budget is what it is, because our VA-centric recruiting strategy doesn't need it to be bigger. Improve the strategy, then raise the revenue.

Careful, now...we have several kids we are trying to recruit from Jersey.
I hate to be negative but I also remember hearing that last years team would have been much different with Adam Smith.
But at what point did it beome a crutch, if any?

Logan accounted for 70% of our total offense. Vick barely accounted for 50% in our championship season. Logan was 10% less of our yardage in 2011. I think it's pretty clear that we really leaned on Logan, arguably more than any other player ever before.
Also, in light of Byrn's comments:
"I think next year, well realize just how much he aided our running game and our passing game," Byrn said. "Its tough to run 25 power rushes right up the gut and run over some linebackers and then have to get in the huddle and hear Loefflers pretty complex offense and go through reads, and all of a sudden be a finesse touch passer and everything. I think thats overlooked a lot. I dont think youre going to find too many running back/quarterback hybrids like he is."
I'd like to mention how each of our players backed, defended, and borderline took offense whenever asked about Logan's struggles/status as a starter. They weren't just toting the company line, they really believed it (if they were lying, then these guys all deserve oscars). This alone should be evidence that there isn't much grey area in the Logan/Leal argument.

Well, we've still got Ohio, Pennsylvania, VA, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee in there. That's a huge area and a lot of people to cover. I think we'll see some spot recruiting outside that area by Grimes and possibly Loeffler, but beyond that, I don't see much point going farther away (and spending more money) on recruits we're not all that likely to get. The distance coupled with very good programs closer to home will probably keep top-tier recruits away.
A school like Stanford can and has to recruit nationally because of the pull/demands of their admissions department. We don't have that, which means we can take more of the recruits closer to home and we're less likely to pull the recruits from farther away.
