Upsets happen in college football all the time. With the number of bowl games we go to, you'd think we'd have more than one in our favor in the last 20 years. Certainly a relative equal number to the times we have been upset, but it isn't even close.
Well, most of us would. You wouldn't, and that's OK too. I just think you need more than one every 20 years to keep a fan base engaged. 20 years is a long time, and expecting a little more doesn't strike me as "spoiled" "ignorant" or any of the other flippant missives people seem all to ready to hurl at fellow fans.
I'm assuming you mean "misdeeds" instead of "misgivings?" If people are picking on me for having doubts, then yea, I'd be pissed. I don't think people are trying to make themselves feel better by criticizing him, and in all honesty I think it's fair game to criticize someone for being a repeat and unrepentant criminal. I would expect people to tear me down if I had multiple drug, weapons, and statutory rape charges and convictions. Regardless of what this guy may have accomplished on the field (which was still short of his full potential), he's a convicted, repeat criminal and is frequently cited by our opponents in a "thug" narrative about VT (not a really valid argument outside of MV5, but it's still out there). It is the complete right of the fan base to disown and criticize him, as he is not representative of what our team or university are or should be. Tough love might be what he needs; once enough people you once respected our counted on turn on you, it's prime time to make things right.
If we were tearing him down for alleged activity, I would be right there with you - it would be wrong. But a conviction is a fact in the eyes of the law. I won't criticize anyone for liking him, defending him, or having faith in him in any way, in my eyes, there is no worse former Hokie than Marcus Vick.

Slam your head all you want. There are ALWAYS going to be fans whom you (and a good number of others on here) label (and mislabel) as "ignorant", "spoiled", etc. But they are still fans and they are not going away. And, what's more, the athletic department knows they need to be appeased to. If anything, they are gonna increase in number. I sincerely doubt that continually bashing them is the most effective way to educate them OR make them go away.
I think Tyrell Wilson is a senior so I would insert Corey Marshall there. Holland Fischer could be in the mix somewhere on that D in a whip/rover role and possibly Andrew montepuka (sp on name) in the mix at mike with DVD and RVD as a backer.
But it doesn't make you or everyone else any better for doing. In fact, there are some that would delegate it as classless. I mean how would you feel if a number of people slammed you day after day for your misgivings?
This seems entirely plausible. What we do know is that losses do hurt this program and set us back (especially bowl losses).
You do realize that there's a track record of VT not performing well against top ranked teams? This isn't my opinion its fact... We won with what we've had before we got top ranked talent so why is this any different? We recruit better than Duke but yet they beat us so let me guess they have better players to fit there system is the reason why we loss...? Then when our team plays bad we say its because we have to many injuries to overcome. Like there's no other team in the country that had injured players that are valuable to there team. I mean UGA had a bad year with injuries, but judging by there score to there Bowl game they seemed to be closer than ours were at the end, but we'll say it's because the team we played was better than there's. Next we'll say that they were bad matchups...smh Bottom line is this coaches get fired everyday because there players aren't performing good enough or star players were injured... Look for me I'd rather people keep it real than sit here and use excuses. We're just not playing good as team right now that goes for defense and Offense i'm not so much looking into stats but consistency our defense hasn't been consistent either although it's been more consistent than our offense which was expected and held true for the most part. You can't go from playing elite one week and struggling against BC one week . To me besides recruiting that's what separates great teams from average it's consistency.
This is and will be the last I'm mentioning this topic but it is what is...
I feel the temptation to slam my head against my desk repeatedly because I think a good deal of the fanbase has unrealistic expectations and are, honestly, generally ignorant. People are upset that we go to lots of bowl games and don't win a lot of them. Fact of the matter is, we do. Beamer is just under .500 in bowls (9-12 after Monday) which is pretty darn good considering we've gone to some very good bowls and played some very good teams over the years. We're not at the level, as a program, where we can go into a BCS game and just expect to win. There are only a handful of such programs in the country. Complain all you want about a lack of "signature" wins, but we've been to some good bowls and, unlike GT for example, we do not have a 7-game losing streak in said bowls.
TSL had a good article previewing that game and surprisingly, Duke actually had a talent advantage, just going off of NFL draft projections (not ideal, but still a decent indication of talent). OL and WR were better across the board. Obviously, we had a defensive advantage, but the talent level at Duke is nothing to scoff at. They had the players to win 10 games this year, that was no fluke or "miracle" coaching.

Not a huge deal, just annoying since I had just gotten off Skype for a meeting, flipped over here to TKP, and nearly got my ears blown off.

I'm with you. I argued from the moment it happened that it was a clear target. I just think, in addition, that responsible sports networks should (1) not replay any play that causes a serious injury and (2) not continually replay a play that was flagged as illegal. Replay it once to debate whether it was a penalty? Sure, I can see that. In cases like PI I can see them taking a couple looks, but not when it's such a damaging foul.

Right you are. 2 completions for 44 yards, one of which was a 46-yard TD. Yep, the other pass went for -2. What a game. Two defensive TDs and #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING.
Especially when you consider that, written in the rule itself is "when in doubt, it is a penalty."

The Hokiebird got more screen time than any of those other entities. He ran out of the tunnel, never to be seen again. (Well, his feet were around sometimes). They showed the band nearly walking over that dumbass reporter standing in front of the band. (We were really rooting for them to Logan Thomas her). The folks I was with no joke assumed that we didn't have cheerleaders. (Seriously. We really thought we hadn't brought cheerleaders). We had one fan. (Sam Rogers' brother.)
We did however get shots of their unattractive cheerleaders, unattractive band, weird looking mascot, and... damn. I have nothing mean to say about their cute asian student body.

I couldn't agree more with this response. It's not the 8-4 finish that is disappointing. It is the WAY we got to 8-4 that is extremely disappointing and leaves me feeling we "left a lot on the table". Poor performances resulting in losses to Duke, BC and Maryland.
I don't mean any disrespect to any Hokie fans, but the last few weeks of the season I kept reading comments (here and other VT sites) rationalizing the 8-4 season with the argument, "hey, 8-4 is about what we expected coming into this season". While that may be true, if we're all honest, not many of us expected 3 of those losses coming to Duke, BC and Maryland. If we're really objective about it, those 3 losses were simply an underperformance.
So, in retrospect, 11-1 truly was an achievable result for this team -- even in a "rebuilding" year. So, for me, that's why I feel so disappointed in this season. I did get my hopes up after the first 6 games. And we then proceeded to drop 3 games where I believe we were the better team. The only one you may argue is Duke. And...I was at the game (the only game I was able to attend) -- we beat ourselves. It wasn't that Duke beat us.
I'll get over it, of course. And, I truly am excited about the near future of VT football. I believe we finally have the offensive staff that can produce the results we've been missing for (ever). And, I am very excited about the uptick in recruiting success this year.

For everyone of those games we could have won, were there not at least 3 more games that we could have easily lost? That Marshall game was insane, but that game could have very easily gone the other way. When you play as many close games as we did with as many inexperienced players as we have at the skill positions, it's impossible to expect to win them all. In games decided by 10 points or less we went 6-3. That's pretty good.
Well, you have me there. The pancakes never seemed to materialize and winning sure didn't work. I don't have the experience or knowledge to say how you respond to something so intentional and egregious. I guess I would have been OK with a little "barbarism" from the tech bench in this case. Perhaps there just weren't the horses to pull it off...
frank famously responded to a caller on tech talk live questioning the offense with "that's outta whack." it turned into this whole thing, there were tshirts and everything.
