maybe 'targeting' should not matter. If there is a rule making defenders avoid initial helmet to helmet contact altogether- it would not matter if its intentional, launching, or whatever.
Mcmillian will probably redshirt, but I fully expect to see him on the offensive side of the ball. He only played qb in high school, so I'm not interested in the growing pains we will see with him on defense. He has the size (6'1 200), the speed (4.41) and the strength (300 bench 500 squat) to be a game changer. Below is the first senior highlight I found on him. Dude has balance.
Even though everyone on here is gushing over Ford, Loeffler included, I am in favor of the Tyrod reincarnation. LT3 was a dual threat who ran like a fb, Mcmillion runs like a tb. Considering how we were shredded by dual threats all season, I would love to the the Hokies doing the shredding. In practice, this will help the defense better prepare for dual threats. At the very least, he will be great for the scout team. That is all.

That's not true though. That was the case when the spread first made it's appearance because it was something unique that defenses weren't prepared for, and often the offenses 3rd WR would be a mismatch for the defenses nicklebacks. Nowadays defenses have gone a long way towards closing the schematic advantage that spread teams have. Add in how many high schools run spread now, and defenses are also able to stock up on athletes used to operating in space.
In fact, we are starting to see offenses that go spread without great athletes get demolished. Placing mediocre offensive athletes in space against superior defensive talents isn't a great recipe for success.
I've seen enough Frank on the sideline to think he's not always so warm and friendly when the cameras are off. I just don't think he's gonna dress someone down in front of outsiders.
Targeting is not solely helmet to helmet. It also is in play if the defender initiates any contact above the shoulders with any part of his body when leaving the ground (Eg. Receiver coming across the middle gets a shoulder to the head by the safety who leaves his feet to make the contact)

Retribution will likely come in the form of permanent brain damage if Mr. Zumwalt continues his helmet-leading ways. Not saying that I wish that to happen to him, it's just one of the consequences that has come to others who play like him.
It really makes me appreciate guys like Kyle Fuller who repeatedly demonstrate sound tackling without thug-like hits. THAT is the kind of player and technique I wish announcers would highlight on TV. Whenever Kyle finishes up in the NFL I hope he returns to coach at VT.

We owned them up and down the field...until we got to the RZ and stopped doing what was working (passing) to get to the RZ in favor of being conservative and playing for the FG attempt. It was terrible coaching exemplified. With the way we were moving the ball on them, the game never should have been close enough for "luck" to be a factor.
Whatever you do, don't ask Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb how to say any names. I almost dove into my TV after Verne Lutefisk when they said Chris "Magnum" for the 18th time. Isn't there some intern in the background that corrects them during commercials?
It's interesting what starts to irritate me when we're losing. And, I wish my last name was Magnum.

I kind of like the way you say this, because I think is summarizes the bowl-related frustration pretty well. Our bowl performance is kind of like our usual regular season performances: We generally beat who we're supposed to, we generally lose the games we're supposed to. When it comes to bucking the trends, we lose to teams we're not supposed to far more often than we beat teams we're not supposed to.
And it's that last element that makes bowl games so fun an exiting - beating someone you're not supposed to. We haven't really done that since...1995? One or two more of those, and the "bowl scuttlebut" isn't even a dicussion topic.

Agreed that was horrible. There were many base video production issues....the sideline reporting was horrible and I generally hated that bowl and the broadcast of it even if we won the thing.

That is true as far as I remember. They never showed penalties or injuries, and for as long as I was there, they did not show any play that went under review, at least after a review was called by the refs. That may have changed, and may have also been an ACC policy.
a lot of HS QBs end up at safety. A lot of times the safety is the "QB of the defense" and I think it's an advantage to have a safety with some QB exp and knowledge of offensive schemes. They know what to look for. I'm saying all of this to support the argument that he could move to the defensive side of the ball w/out having played defense in HS without that much trouble. The QB position is pretty loaded and we're bringing in some talent at WR. We'll be getting thin on D so it wouldn't be a bad idea to move him to safety in my mind.
