We do have the facilities, they just aren't as nice. They're kinda old, not as shiny, stuff like that. The athletic building next to Cassell is not necessarily the nicest coaches facility.
There are facilities and there are Oregon level Facilities. If you were 18 years old and saw the crazy plush digs that they got out there; it would be tough not to be overwhelmed. You have to agree that not all things are created equal even if we have a weight room and they have a weight room. Watch the Gameday clip of Mariotta going through the Oregon facilities with all the bells and whistles. $68 million dollar football only facilty is nuts.
When you say that we have better players I won't contest that. But that isn't the problem that we face. It has taken Duke 5 years under cutcliffe to get the correct players to fit his system and coach them in the system to get the results they had on the field this year. Our previous Offensive coaching staff didn't have any kind of coherent plan for recruiting. We didn't get OLs or WRs or QBs. We got a bunch of TEs and Athletes and converted them into OLs WRs and QBs. That is not a recruiting recipe for success.
We need to focus on getting the 'best fit' players instead of just 'raw talent' players. That is what David Cutcliffe has done at Duke. We also need to coach the players into the system. That doesn't happen over night. It doesn't happen in a season. It takes time. Duke has been slowly and progressively improving. They didn't just flip a switch this past off season and turn into a formidable opponent. It has taken half a decade of recruiting certain types of players for certain positions and then coaching them into a system for more than 1 season. We'll get there. Just be patient.
The idea would be to clarify/simplify helmet to helmet hits. Other targeting scenarios (shoulder) would still be in place. An official wouldn't have to attempt to determine intent, If there's a helmet to helmet hit initiated by the defender without other contact he's penalized and ejected.

True. We did build that nice practice facilty right outside Lane (the fields I mean). But we are never going to compete with the SEC in terms of money, we are not Oregon and the Nike cash, we will never be a Texas, Michigan, tOSU, or USCw. We are just VT. Hell, we didn't build a football building near Lane because we wanted to save the old growth forest near the stadium. THAT is VT. And I actually love that. We have competed at a high level without having the NCAA infractions committee running an investigation (Miami, UNC). We are who we are and we got to this level by outworking and outcoaching other teams; heres to hoping we that will be enough to get back.

I agree, I wonder if JC got the carries simply because he had more experience not more talent. I have never been impressed with JC when they have attempted to use him as a main back.
Looking forward to another year for Wright and Mangus to learn how to pick up blocks and hit holes. I think the lack of blocking is probably why they were behind JC.
I'd say the QB's were equal when we played them. And by equal I mean 4 picks worth.
most of our recruits are better than dukes players, even our 2nd stringers. But yet they play at a much higher level because they have an unbelievable coach. I understand your reasoning here and I agree with you for the most part im just asking that you look at it from other perspectives as well
Maybe we aren't hurting for money as a university, but we definitely do not have the some of the facilities that other schools have. We're working towards it though with things like the indoor facility.

I joined Hokie Nation in 2000. Every year that I was down there the campus was under contruction, the stadium added an entire new endzone seating to increase capacity and we are still putting up a new building each year. All this has directly been driven by football raising VT's national profile. I don't think we are hurting for cash as a university. Why would booster money directly relate to football success unless that money went into a recruit or players pocket? Beamer is one of the highest paid employees in the state of Virginia and Foster is one of the highest paid assistants in football.
OK State has T. Boone Pickens bankrolling them and it hasn't put them into the National Title game yet.

Seriously though, if not for this hit then any of the other two (one on JC and one on Mangus that I remember) he shouldn't have been in the game. I'm still not sure how you throw a flag on that hit but DON'T eject him.
At least Logan had an epic run for us all to remember him by. Say what you want, but I'm a damn proud card carrying member of the LT3 will be missed campaign. Wish he didn't have to play the dark knight and pay for the shortcomings of the coaches before him.
Is there a Mike Vick Style once-in-a-generation player coming in? If so, then yes, it will be like '99, if not it might be closer to those other BCS years (ceiling) or a 6-6 campaign (basement).
I'm not sure how exactly to go about this, but I'd love for the Hokies to somehow get a recruiting hand out west. Maybe get some sort of game out with a Big 12 team or something, but I really wish we'd even get low star players from the midwest region and slowly work up. I know it's hard with all the quality schools out there, just a bit of wishful thinking
It was amazing to watch. We completed only 2 passes that game (I believe). We ran like hell and they couldn't stop us, controlled the possession and had crazy defense. Like legitimately crazy defense.
The crux of the rule was brought in to avoid hits to the head especially on defenseless players, this would go back to allowing head hunters as long as they use their shoulder pads to deliver the blow to the head which currently they are not supposed to be able to do.
Do I side with strengthening the punishment and making the rule as black and white as possible, absolutely. I would be interested to know how many players across the NCAA were ejected this year to see how often the new rules were even utilized.

I do agree that we do not have as much money as other programs, but do we ever think that that lack of funds might come from never winning the big game? We lose a lot of our BCS bowls, and winning those kinda makes boosters donate just a bit more due to the success. I wouldn't necessarily say that we don't win just because we don't have money, I'd even say we don't have money because we don't win. Success=Cash. I believe winning 10 consistently but not winning in the bowl game kind of calloused us to those 10 wins - since it was so common, the boosters wanted just a bit more before they opened up their wallets even wider, and we failed to give it to them
I'm furious as well and that was just a dirty cheap shot. That kid did it again later to JC and in other games. Would have loved to seen a DJ Coles crack back block on him for payback. That kid is a danger to himself and others and hopefuly he gets called out and learns not to play like this.
Why not David Wang at center? he has played well this season...I thought he was horrible last year but he has come on well. Is it due to fear of injury?
