His bio on hokiesports.com says he played six positions in HS and was all-conference at DB. I think he could do it.
You just described Boston College. lol
Playing Leal will do nothing but stagnate this program for a year. He's not the type of QB that Lefty is working to build his system around nor does he have the talent to warrant getting the job regardless.
I can definitely see Loeffler going to a 2 QB system, most likely with Leal and Durkin. I can see Durkin handling things in the red zone and some short-yardage situations out of a spread formation. This would limit the playbook for him and force other teams to prepare for both a spread running attack and a pro-style offense.
I think an copy of Duke's offense is what we might see next year.
And the refs.

If you want to be a regular contender for NCG you need to put yourself in the position to get lucky enough to have all the stuff fall your way just to get to the game. You have to do that often enough to win it.
To do that you need a huge boster program to generate the cash to do Everything required to keep yourself in the top 10 year after year until all the chips fall your way. Then after a few years outside the top 20, your base gets pissed, fire the coach and try again.
VT fan base is excellent, but the little military and technical school in the hills of SW Va just is not big enough to generate that kind of alumni size as the whole of the Texas school system or the Loiusiana school system or the PA state school system.
Picking up Notre Dame is a great step to get there but it's going to take more time and more alumni and boosters.
I generate as many fans as I can. We don't need a gold plated lunch pail, we need more lunch pails if you want to win a NCG, it takes everything you have to give. Are you ready to do that? The little old school in the hills can do it if anybody can.
Whole lotta this going on...

Still a shitty and classless way to handle it.

GT may be on the same level as UVA in a few years if this keeps up.
Please let it be so!
What about Motley? He'll be a R-Fr next year. What about the system? Leal might as well be a R-Fr this year too. You know damn well that Leal learned absolutely nothing from O'cain so it's not off the wall to consider him a T-So next year. If you have a T-So, a R-Fr and a couple of talented T-Fr QBs I think you open up the QB battle in the spring and may the best man win.
Sure Leal has the 'most' experience (barely..he's thrown, what, 30 passes?) of the group but Loeffler is likely to build an offense around the skills of the younger guys. If Leal can operate effectively within that design he might start. But if the offense is designed around the skills of, lets say, Ford then Ford is going to have an inherent advantage over Leal and could easily win out.
If we didn't have a brand new coaching staff I wouldn't disagree with you. But the fact of the matter is, Leal is pretty damn green because O'cain didn't teach him anything and he only has 1 year of experience in they system with minimal game experience. Motely has the same time of experience in the system and might even be more talented than Leal.
I really don't think it's insane to think Leal might not start next year, and I would NOT venture so far as to say that VT is in BIG BIG BIG trouble if Leal isn't #1
And we think that we are heading in the wrong direction? GT may be on the same level as UVA in a few years if this keeps up.
That's like saying that Ryan Fitzpatrick is Aaron Rodgers without the arm strength.
Surely this thread topic is a joke? Ford or Durkin will be the starter next year? If either one of those two are the starter, VT is in BIG, BIG, BIG trouble. Reality check: These guys are NOT big time recruits, gang. They are essentially the same level of recruit as Leal was coming out of HS. The notion that starting either one will essentially be a wash with starting Leal is nonsense.
For better or worse, Leal is almost certainly our best and only option for next year. My only hope is that one of the incoming Frosh QBs (or someone else) will be ready come 2015. But even then, starting a r-Fr at QB is far from optimal. I honestly think it will be 2016 before everything comes together and VT has a solid chance to return to a 10 win season.
That's very interesting. I'm curious when PJ is gone how long GT will be irrelevant.
"10" years past? DW left in '11 (2 years), RW and DE left the year prior (3 years). Remember, all three of those RBs set various records for us.
I don't google.
Tried to use instagram..... quickly tried to use vine.... f****.

It downloads slow as f****... about 12 Mb. Best video I've seen on the hit. Feel bad posting this thing but IMHO this was a really bad hit and CBS after they talked about what a great hit it was didn't seem to be showing the right angle. I think they only showed this angle once.
CBS guys, Zummwalt, and Mora owe LT an apology IMHO.
Holland Fisher is enrolling for spring semester if he qualifies. And he's starting out at FS, not Whip.
we didn't exactly switch them off every game but we did a 2 QB system with Taylor and Glennon. I seem to remember Frank taking some criticism from the media for the move early in the season but after we got 10 wins they changed their tune a bit. I don't think it's something that Loeffler would do. He doesn't seem like the type of OC/QB coach who wants to employ 2 QBs in one season unless he has to (injury). I think Leal will start at the top of the depth chart and he'll have to fight for his job. I honestly have no idea who might start for a majority of the season but I have my suspicions that it won't be Leal.
If Tech uses a two quarterback system and gets close to ten wins it'll be despite the rotation, not because of it. I don't believe in two quarterback systems and I don't believe in "playing the hot hand". You work your men out during the offseason and see who wins the competition.
If you can't decide during practice which one has earned it, then play the one with the bigger upside.
Johnny Football was a 3 star QB, if I'm not mistaken.
The truth is, you don't know what a player is capable of until you get them on the field. It's perfectly reasonable to expect one of the freshmen to play next year.
Just to be clear, you wanted one of our guys to knock him out of the game, right? The whole "eye for an eye" thing. I'd really hoped we were above that because I don't see the whole "if they do something to us, we're gonna do the same to them" thing ending in anything but a bunch of unnecessary penalties, ejections, fights, etc. Allowing our guys to go out and retaliate is basically saying that its ok to go out there and try and hurt other players.
I'm just as upset that he didn't get punished more harshly for what was obviously a dirty hit on Logan and the one he laid on Coleman later on but sending our guys out to deliberately do something to take him out is about as bad an idea as replacing Beamer with Lane Kiffin....or Time Cop for that matter
I would be VERY, VERY surprised. Loeffler may like Ford, but 1) not enough to keep him from QUICKLY jumping after another guy with a totally different style, and 2) certainly not enough to risk his job starting a borderline 3*/4* recruit at QB as a true Frosh over a r-Sr.
For a quick reality check, go back and look at the recruiting info for Leal. He was rated basically the same as Ford by Rivals -- both 3* w/ a 5.6 rivals rating; Leal ranked as the 26th rate dual-threat QB nationally; Ford the 27th ranked pro-style QB nationally.
FWIW, my eyes agree with Rivals and I just don't see where this "legend of Andrew Ford" stuff is coming from. He's a nice recruit and may end up a good QB -- or he may not. But he almost certainly will NOT be the QB in 2014.
Wow I swore it was a clean hit UNTIL I just saw this... that guy should have been packing after that hit! What a douche! I think he also had a helmet to helmet on JC later that game too.

For some reason I've liked Farris better at C.
