There's a big difference between a 3 TE set where your TE's are blockers (see Stanford's way of running the ball with 8 linemen) and a 3 TE set where they are receivers. We would need bigger players than Cline and Bucky to be effective there. At least one of them would need to be a primarily blocking TE or a very mobile offensive linemen
Haha I'm not saying I want to attract those kind of players, but don't you think top recruits like nice things? I mean sure we can get the ones that "want to play for VT" but that means if they're a high level recruit they won't want to come here unless they had 3 brothers attend the school before them. The "identity" of not being flashy is nice and all, but eventually you have to think that improving facilities will improve recruiting. Recruiting will then allow for higher talent to be coached up to the max, fielding the best possible team you can.
I would really love to see some 2 TE sets next year with Malleck and Cline. Even better if Stiney can work with Cline some more on blocking. A good off-season in the gym will also help Cline a lot.
Stiney was out of his depth as OC, but I think he has been one of our better position coaches.
I think a couple good pancakes would have sufficed.
Next year, we are going to OSU and curb stomping them in their house. I think they lose a lot this year to the draft.
OR you run some 3 TE sets. Can you imagine how awesome that could be? Throw Rogers back there with Edmunds and run a hurry up out of it. Could be lethal.

The problem with the Duke/BC/MD losses wasn't that we lost, it's that we underperformed. Against duke we turned the ball over 4 times (once in the redzone), missed 2 kicks and lost by three points. If we get three points between one of the two missed kicks, or hit a field goal instead of turning the ball over in the endzone, the game goes to OT.
We out gained BC by nearly 150 yards, but made 2-4 bad plays that cost us the game.
Maryland we came storming out of the game got robbed of a touchdown (awful officiating), missed a 34 yard fg (not Kristein's fault, he was in a tough situation, but we shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place), then later in the game, our defense didn't step up the way a top 10 defense should.
Every game we lost was winnable. We had so many chances to win each of these games, but couldn't. We left points on the field that would have tied or won us each of these games. No (realistic) fan was expecting an 11 win season, but as the possibility seemed more and more possible, the expectations rose (rightfully so). That's why this was such a bittersweet season.

Considering it is a call that they can video review and overturn IF wrong, it absolutely should have been called. Its a nasty hit and was stomach churning to watch. If you switch the jerseys, I still feel that same way.

I actually think the metaphor of a crowded parking lot is appropriate. So, what could be Zumwalt's excuse? "Hey, I didn't MEAN to hit his chin and knock him out...football is a contact sport stuff happens." Well, technically that might be true, if you give him the benefit of the doubt (which I do not). But you can certainly take steps to prevent that without really impacting your performance.
In a crowded parking lot with lots of blindspots, technically you could drive pretty fast and blame hitting someone else backing up or walking in front of you on their carelessness. But you as an experienced driver bear much responsibility knowing that their are those risks, to ignore them and just trust that everyone will be where they are supposed to is just being ignorant. Logan is 6'6", plenty of ways to lay a hit on him on that play that are less risky.
I agree, its like a girl only going out with you if you drive a Lambo, or Bentley, we don't need those thuggin, mean muggin, gold digging recruits to come and just be swagg swagg swagg but no performance.
That's the point, we can't recruit the elite talent consistently because like it or not, that's what an 18 year old kid wants to see haha
I hope that Maddy sees that he can be the "Man" next year and comes back. Not to mention a couple of good years always looks better than just 1 good year.

That was also last year. It's a lot easier to move the field than it is in the red zone, particularly with the scheme we were running. If I recall that game correctly, we not only had a TD pass get overturned, we had a TD pass in the RZ get called back for holding, and a couple where LT overthrew the receiver that was wide open. We settled for field goals, and yes, some of that is coaching, but a missed sure fire field goal, or a TD catch that was overturned, that's luck, plain and simple. I'm also, maybe it's a different game I'm thinking of, thinking that one of their TDs was our defender flat out FALLING DOWN on the field and allowing their receiver to be wide freaking open. That's not coaching, that's just a trip that has a terrible consequence.
No, Merryman is not a flashy building, but have you actually been down into where the coaches are? Have you seen their offices and meeting rooms? They're nothing to be ashamed of. They've been made modern but flashy isn't VT's style.
And how exactly do you retaliate against a defensive player without getting throw out of the game? Block him harder? I am assuming you are talking about something outside of the rules or something late after the whistle. Both of which would have ejected that player, run the risk of serious injury to Zumwalt, and would have been more damaging to VT than to UCLA.

I agree, but the statement was that we don't have facilities that other schools have. We aren't at a disadvantage with what we have as far as performance but attractiveness I will say we are slightly behind. We have a brand new locker room that is loaded to be a premier facility. No, we don't have waterfalls, but that's just a gimmick and that's not VT. There's a reason we carry a lunchpail. Our weight room has been updated but it's not brand new. In the end though, are brand new weights going to make you any stronger? Bells and whistles and flashy items only help recruiting, not performance.
Also look at the trend.. No Thursday Night games, No ALL Maroon Everything, No Bowl win... whats next???
Logan was 3/11 passing for 46 yards at that point. He was not having a good game except for one monster run. That was not how he wanted to end his career at Tech.

Cowards. Our country seems to be filling up with them. Highly educated arseholes who make the world a worse off place. As long as its legal seems to be there motto.
I get what the NCAA is... hopefully the university presidents will see a need to put some muscle behind the most recent attempts to protect players, for better for worse, sorta like the NFL is doing.
