I understand your good intention, but I think you're drinking too much coachspeak kool aid on this one. Would we have preferred to have Malleck this year? Absolutely. But if Loeffler really "designed the offense" around Malleck, then that's a little crazy and would greatly worry me about our offensive future. You can't depend on any single player, outside of the QB, that much in football (especially one who, let's face it, was not that proven with 17 career catches and 0 TDs). The Patriots are obviously worse off without Rob Gronkowski, but they still found ways to adjust and win without him- not that losing Malleck is anywhere close to comparable to losing Gronkowski.
I have nothing against Malleck, but if the coaches needed Malleck so badly to design the offense around him we were doomed to struggle anyway. I believe the much bigger issue is that our roster lacked some of the elite skill position players we've had in recent years. Pinning those expectations on Malleck and claiming his injury is to chiefly responsible for that loss in production seems incredibly silly though.
This is very true. My only silver lining is this: The O-line should be dramatically improved with returning 4/5ths of the current line, new starters, fresh competition, and an off-season in the weight room. If VT makes a decent bowl next year, it will likely be due to physical domination from the O-line and a solid rushing attack.

I'm sure some will disagree, but did this season (2013) remind anyone of 1997? Well just looking at the results I suppose. I was still not accepted into the Hokie Nation back then so some of the older Hokies might have to fill me in, but in that season we went 7-5, and lost our bowl game 42-3 (worst bowl loss until UCLA in 2013). Two (2) years later we went to play for a National Title. I really didn't put much research into this. Really just thought about it when Andy Bitter mentioned this was the worst bowl loss (points wise) since that year.

Yeah, not only was the hit late, but dude didn't even try to wrap. It was a direct retaliation for LT trucking half the UCLA defense. Zumwalt sent the message that if LT was going to embarrass his D, then he would take LT out of the game.

the ESPN announcer (whomever) described the North Texas Green Machine Defense
as 'the best in the country" ... or something to that effect.
I will say nothing more to this point.
The past two season have really brought out the best and worst of Hokie fans. The best are those who have continued to buy season tickets, go to away games, and cheer on the team until their lungs give out and the clock hits 0:00 in the 4th quarter. Then there's the worst group. They are the most vocal about their beliefs. One thing I've really noticed is that many (not all) of the people who have become fans of the team within the last 5-10 years are wanting to burn everything to the ground after these last 2 seasons. Too many people are calling for Beamer to be fired and for what exactly? Many of the newer fans watched us rack up 10 win seasons, play in nearly every ACC Championship game, and play in BCS games more times than UVA had fans at their Spring Game. The reality is that things like that don't continue on forever. They have to come to an end. Like many things, college football is cyclical. Every team has their ups and downs. We will get back there. We will be at the top. But let's all step back and realize that it won't happen every single year. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but one day, our bowl streak will end.

That's how I felt about CFB as well. I really didn't feel like he was going after him. He was just saying that it was too bad that he got pushed around the field the way he did.
I think this is an important point. I think that in the old system with the old coaches Leal would be the unquestioned starter given his athleticism and play making abilities. But that is not what Loeffler wants. Loeffler wants a coach on the field that can go through audibles and read everything that is happening. From what we know right now that guy is Ford. He will still have to win the job but there is no question in my mind that Loeffler hopes Ford wins the job.
Yeah. In case anyone is looking in on this conversation, let's get some misdirection going. TORRIAN GREY IS a FAIR coach. He's great at getting defensive backs TO excel, making even the best receivers look like there are in the MIDDLING of the pack. He also excels AT getting defensive backs to hit people. He's the BEST.

That Miami game was my favorite Hokie football game. One of the best defensive performances that I've witnessed.
Depends on if he heals well. He will likely miss all spring practices and spring game. But, I hope you're right.
Agreed. When CFB said what he did about Leal, he was consoling the kid for having a really tough time in an impossible situation. It's the kind of thing a coach should say when his backup QB has just had his a$$ handed to him. I don't think there is any chance of designing the 2014 offense around Leal unless he proves that he has the highest ceiling of the QBs who show up in the spring.
BTW, I still don't know which syllable of Leal receives the emphasis. Is it LEE-al (like real or deal) or is it le-AL (sort of like "meow")?
2003 was a difficult schedule. We did pull off a huge win against No. 2 Miami at least that season.
I said before this game to expect a horrid broadcast from my least favorite announcers in the game in Verne and Gary. They constantly have bias going into every game, and CONSTANTLY mess up names, even in SEC games. I watch games on mute with a radio broadcast going nowadays when CBS broadcasts a game. It's just so terrible, and I can only take so many effing commercials.
To everyone who is talking about them replaying the Zumwalt hit...they do this with MOST penalized hits. Late hits, helmet to helmet, defenseless receiver hits, personal fouls, and targeting fouls are CONSTANTLY replayed on this horrible network.
If it seems like I hate CBS and Verne and Gary, it's because I truly do. They have been mangling SEC broadcasts for years. Verne may be great for the Master's, but there he usually only has to remember like a two dozen names instead of the amount that play in a college football game (48+?). If CBS never aired another college football game I would be very happy.
That was more of a Leal impact. If a QB throws the ball straight at you with nothing but open field in front of you, it's required that you take it to the house. If you don't take it to the house, then you get to be an impact player.
I have the same respect for Beamer and Foster that the rest of the world has, but I have to say: the defense did not look prepared for that game. I have that same thought almost every year when I watch the bowl game. The peculiar rhythm of bowl game preparation doesn't seem to be a strong suit for our coaches.
I think they need to start calling targeting consistently or just let everyone start having a field day and do whatever the hell they want. Right now, a bunch of people have bad opinions on what is targeting and what isn't. For instance, one of the authorities on the new rule believed that the hit that Clowney put on that Michigan RB was targeting, but Clowney wrapped up and mainly made contact on the RB's chest. No way that was targeting, but the hit on Thomas wasn't.

Cline is by far the most athletic receiving threat on the team for 2014. With Coles gone, he should become the #1 Redzone target.

I get your point, but I was mainly going for the amount of times he threw the ball, and still he was pretty productive when doing so. He didn't have to be the super star that Logan had to be because the lack of recruiting.
And the biggest point was they had an identity that wasn't revolved around 2 players or a Zone Read team. Lefty had basically a MAC team caliber offense to work with in an ACC school
