The biggest mistake the team made was trading Boldin. They had the money to keep him, as well. I'm not really sure why they did it, but their offense is anemic with only 1 quality receiver.
See my other posts. The important little bit of Flacco's contract, the salary cap hit, which is all that really matters to the teams, is 6.8 million dollars. Seems like a lot right? That doesn't even get him close to being in the top 10 of QB contracts this year, a ranking occupied by fearsome and vaunted QBs like Mark Sanchez (at #8, 12.8 million dollars), or Sam Bradford (#9, 12.6 million dollars).
Flacco's contract is a steal for the Ravens.

I'm half-jokingly ripping off 3rdand31 of course, but I think he is good enough to put in a few series and provide a spark like that if needed instead of using the wildcat.
The salary cap impact is an interesting point, but don't cloud the issue with hard facts. I'm a fan, but the team dynamic and culture changed completely with the combination of Flacco's contract and the retirement of Lewis. IMO keeping Anquan Boldin another year would have helped as a transition and been worth it.

The size of the contract has nothing to do with it. The salary cap hit is what's important, and by comparison, Flacco's contract doesn't even come close to the top 10.

Not a fan of the Ravens. They are getting exactly what they asked for by giving an average QB one of the largest contracts in the NFL. His contract shouldn't even be in the same discussion as Peyton's, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees.
Flacco has a SB ring, well so does Trent Dilfer.
Flacco's money-sucking self-centered childish contract costs less against the cap than Terrel Suggs' contract or Heloti Ngata's contract by a lot.
He's not even the most "damaging" player in terms of cap space on the team. How many other high paid QBs are the fourth largest cap hits on their teams?
Flacco kept this year's cap hit for his contract low so that they could improve the team. Remember, in the NFL all that matters is the cap space, not the numbers on the front of the contract.

Edit: By comparison, the altruistic Tom Brady, as you mentioned, has the largest cap hit on the Patriots team (which is fine, he's obviously their most valuable player). It's also roughly twice as much as Joe Flacco's.

I love to trash Flacco because he's an average QB that Ravens fans think is incredible, but his contract only counts about $6 million against the cap this year. The Ravens weren't very good last year either, they just got really lucky and got hot at the right time. It's like the Giants. Sure they won 2 SB's, but in the years they didn't win they weren't very good (save the 13-3 season when Plaxico got suspended). They just got hot at the right time.
I would actually argue the previous 4 Ravens teams were all better than last years team.
I'm not a Ravens fan either- but most of my family is, and as such I'm forced to follow the team in order to deal with their massive overreactions (Ravens fans like to think the sky is falling down if they lose two games in a row).

their down season IS because of the the QB..maybe not his play directly, but the fact that he negotiated such a Monster deal with the Ravens, now they can't afford to have anybody but the bunch of 'has-runs' and 'nobodies' that you allude to. If he was being paid about what he was worth the team would be able to bring in a better supporting cast and right the ship. Flacco's selfishness got them to where they are. I'm not trying to say he's bad like Jason Cambell, he's just a money sucking self-centered childish QB who cares about nothing but himself. THAT's why I don't like him.
I 100% agree. A large part of any starting QBs market value in the NFL is that their simply arn't enough quality starters to go around. So in that regards, they are "worth" whatever the team is willing to pay.
But in terms of actual performance, contracts in sports should be based on "What will you do for me", not "What have you done for me" (For example, the Lakers signing Kobe Bryant to a $48 million extension just a few days ago in the twilight to say the least of his career).
In that light, this year Flacco has not been worth his contract. Not saying he won't be int he future, but he rode 1 magic postseason to a mega-deal (and I am not saying he shouldn't have, if someone put a contract with that money in front of me I would sign it post haste)
GT probably has a better chance of beating Georgia than Clemson does over USC. Not only is Murray out, but they've lost their top receiver, multiple defenders and Gurley has been in and out all season because of injuries. The Dawgs are just too depleted.
Connor Shaw is fairly healthy for USCe, and he went to Mizzou and came back big time to win. I think they are evenly matched with Clemson and it comes down to the 4th quarter.
Technically, FSU still has a longer streak, but they vacated wins in 2006 and 2007. They still went to a bowl, so I guess it might(?) still count as going to the bowl.
I think the Ravens are wasting their money more than Flacco's 'talent' as you suggest. He's not a dumpster fire type of QB like Brady Quinn or somebody like that, but he sure as hell isn't worth $100M
Ahh you're right - completely forgot about FSU.
Many people are removing FSU from that because they had to vacate their 2006 bowl win, but they still went to a bowl game regardless. So yes, we are in 2nd to FSU.
