I definitely get what you're saying in that second paragraph, but I think that's a really dangerous thought process. "New" does not always automatically = "better." Even if we did make a slam-dunk hire on the level of Saban or Harbaugh, it might take a couple seasons to actually see results. My point is: when you talk about replacing the best, most consistent aspect of your program, the risk is far greater than the potential reward, IMO.
As for that Kool-Aid, I drink it daily myself. I wouldn't know what was real anymore if it came out that Beamer wasn't actually running a clean program.
It'll be an interesting spring, summer and fall, that's for sure. We'll have great battles at QB (even if it's just the backup, it'll say a lot about where we're going in the future), LB, DT (hopefully) and even kicker.
Understand that players don't know the techniques out of the womb. And I agree that the changes we made were necessary, and well overdue.
Look, I get your point, but I also feel like the OP that started this has a valid point - we VT fans tend to settle. Maybe it's because we feel like we're that Little School That Could, or being off in the Virginia mountains, or whatever, but we have hit a certain level and stopped. I think the OP is voicing a certain displeasure in all that.
(And coaches make millions because ALL of us that love college football pretend to believe in the myth of the student-athlete, and ignore the element of players being hired guns. I feel like our guys are less mercenary than other places, but that might be my OWN Kool-Aid talking.)

If that was truly the case, coaches wouldn't make millions. It's their responsibility to coach technique and implement an intelligent gameplan to maximize the strengths of their team. The previous coaching staff CLEARLY was unable to do that. The current one has at least proven competent in that regard.
A team with another year of experience under its belt, that had veteran players in many, or at least key, spots. And while coaches coach, and wear the logo, they don't step out on the field at game time.
I'll take my chances on down-voting... Please don't use bowl eligible as a synonym for 'any good.' Last year SHOULD have been the end of The Streak, but the NCAA's inability to say 'no' to any town with a stadium, a check, and a dream has as much to do with it as anything else.
If this were 15, 20 years ago, and those losses were all to bowl eligible/played in a bowl teams, then that helps. Now, 35 bowl games. 70 teams get one. That's more than 1/2 of Div-1.
Amen to that. Last week, we found out Loeffler works up to 19 hours a day. Dude pretty much lives in his office. Side note: he still took the time this morning to answer an email I sent him last night. How cool is that?
We heard all summer and fall how Logan and the seniors kept the team working like they haven't in years, trying to fill that trophy case. They knew if they pulled the upset against Bama, they had a shot and that was their goal all along. Even when they're out of the NC hunt, the goal is ALWAYS (pretty realistically) the ACC championship. This program has higher goals than a lot of college football teams.
Serious question: is this team, overall, an improvement?
I would say elements are better, but some are worse, so I'd argue the jury might still be out on improvement. Yes, we all feel better about ourselves this year, since we qualified to keep The Streak alive far, FAR sooner, but we stand one game better on the docket. And to me, some of the losses this time out were more gut-wrenching than the year before. Losing to UM, FSU and Clemson last year had some amount of dignity - even a loss to UNC wasn't the end of the world. But Duke at home (yes, they're better, but at home?), BC (still a lesser opponent), and Maryland (a dumpster fire at this point, and getting ripped by local media) isn't great.
I BELIEVE that we're better than UVa, and will beat them, which can help us feel better that this IS an improved program. But I/we also knew we were better than Duke, BC, and UMd, and look how that turned out.
Three coaches no longer wear a VT on their chest. What do you think it was?
It saddens me to have my kinfolk used for manual labor. I knew that horse in high school, and it was pretty evident this was his ceiling, though.
That makes me feel slightly (only slightly) better.
Bur realistically, EVERY year is rebuilding in college football, when you have 4-5 years of playing time. What was last year's excuse?
You're 100% right that sometimes stuff just doesn't work.
But I remember texting a friend when we had like 2nd and 2 and we decided to run Edmunds down the line to the outside, then on the next play we run him to the top of the formation, again to the outside. Neither play went anywhere. Instead of trying to plow up the middle and force our way to 2 yards, we avoided the middle of the line. That's something that bothers me a bit, because 'tip of the spear' doesn't translate in my mind to what we're doing.
Might just be a matter of the situation that was inherited. Hopefully this will change over time.
Changes ahead hopefully. this was just a bad game (again) with really no turnvovers on us for a change. Special teams bit us in the arse, questionable play calling, late adjustments on D, and poor execution (Coles drop in OT) really resulting in this loss. Another winnable game for sure, yes, but not. I feel really bad for the seniors and the expression from Tariq Edwards after the game really showed. Love my Hokies always and we got to get better.
This makes me a little sad towards the human race. Really dude?
I just don't know. I think we'd all like to see our guys have a shot to win the championship, but this edition of FSU is pretty dominant. When you are out scoring teams 28 to 0 in the FIRST quarter that means something.
Could they have a bad day? Sure. Could we execute and catch some breaks like we did at Miami? Sure.
One thing is certain. Screw conference loyalty. I have a saying about championships, "anybody, but Miami or FSU" and more recently added Clemson!

Even coach Foster said something very similar this week.
It is very likely the game against the hoos from hooville will be a grind too, although I am cautiously optimistic that we win.
Are there head scratching play calls? Yes, but when games are won nobody remembers a 3rd and 1 not being converted.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from. As of right now, we are ranked in the 20s, and 4th or 5th place in the ACC. It's not like we're pulling an Ole Miss (last year) or Tennessee.
I was thinking there must have been something going on in the middle of the line that I could not see from the stands.
