THIS^^^ I can't stand running out of the shotgun all the time. You hand the ball off 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage with no momentum. Half the time it is going to the outside which is even worse. If we want to run the ball we need to get back to smash mouth football where we line up in the power formations and stuff it down their throat. We aren't a spread team and definitely don't have the personnel for it so I don't know why we are trying to model Oregon when we should be modeling an Alabama or Stanford.
Turnovers by anyone on the offense will hurt this team. The offense is just not strong enough to overcome any turnovers.
I know Thomas is a competitor bit I hope he works on these mental mistakes. He relies on his physical abilities too much.
I feel bad for Logan. He was originally wanted to be a TE and it seems like he wants to work hard to be a qb, but he just doesn't seem to have that natural qb quality or awareness. I hope he still has a future in the NFL, even if it isn't at quarterback.
I can dig something like that. I value everyone's thoughts, but every opinion doesn't need a new post.
Fuck you. You haven't been hearing this for four years. Tyrod was the starter in the 2010 season. Thomas was considered a god send through most of the 2011 season by most of the fan base.
I don't normally get as mad at someone as I am at you right now, but wow. Way to be an ignorant jerk.
I will say it right now: Thomas is terrible when he tries to play hero ball. He was terrible today. I even said when his arm was hurt we should have put Leal in.
But this? This post is concentrated vitriol. I'm staying of this board and probably the internet until next Saturday. Just... damn.
LT's fumble on the goal line that was recovered by Miller is the reason Loeffler prefers LT in the shotgun. But, running out of the shotgun 99% of the time limits what we can do in the running game.
I don't understand why that play was even reviewed. I thought there were certain instances where they ALWAYS review (scoring/turnovers) and when there is a challenge. Why did they stop the game and review the play without a challenge flag?
Yea, I think there are too many extremes here. Logan is getting too much blame and too much love at the same time. His play certainly is not above criticism, but he also doesn't deserve to be bashed and thrown under the bus. I don't think he should be benched as he does give us the best chance to win IMO, but there is definitely a problem. To not realize he is throwing the ball too fast to nearby receivers is a problem. He doesn't always need so much heat on the ball. He has to remember that these are young and inexperienced receivers, so he is partly to blame if he keeps throwing the ball in a way that makes it hard for them to catch. The other problem is his inability to make good decisions consistently throughout the entire game. A 5th year senior QB can't force a ball into the endzone while on the run only to be intercepted or throw the ball up for grabs when under pressure and falling backwards while the game is tied in the fourth quarter. Those two decisions are what I would expect from a first year starter, not a three year starter. And that is where our problem is. I don't know how you go about fixing that though.
Bottom line: We simply need better players on offense.
We lost this game because of four turnovers.
On the 1st turnover, a better WR catches that ball cleanly and turns it up the field for another 5-10 yards rather than batting it into the air where it can be intercepted.
On the 2nd turnover, a better QB doesn't hold on to the ball too long so that it can be stripped from behind.
On the 3rd turnover, a better QB doesn't lob the ball into the middle of the field while throwing off his back foot under pressure so that it can be easily intercepted and returned for a TD. Instead, he chucks it out of bounds, preserves the tie, and trusts his defense to hold.
On the 4th turnover, a better QB holds the ball high and tight against his body so that it can't be stripped away when he's being tackled.
Aside from the four turnovers, we had at least three dropped passes by receivers, overthrows of open receivers by our QB, RBs who often tripped over their own feet, and linemen who got called multiple times for holding.
We simply need an infusion of better talent on offense. I think it's on the way, plus freshmen like Calvin Kline can get better as they get more experience. But the biggest single improvement we need is at QB.
Don't get me wrong. I love Logan Thomas. He's a great kid, he works his tail off, and he wants to succeed very badly. Sometimes, he can be very, very good. I hope that with a better surrounding cast in the NFL, he can have a successful career and make millions of dollars. But the bottom line for VT is that he misses too many open receivers due to inaccurate throws and he makes too many bad decisions. He's a lot like Matt Schaub down here in Houston. 95% of the time, he's fine. But he makes a handful of mistakes in each game that just absolutely kill you.
"Yall Logan lovers". Really??
Sorry, but there's no need for that comment on this board. Quite a few of us are on this board to get away from that kind of stuff on other boards.
Please keep the conversation civil.
Look at it this way. Thomas is the team's leader. Take him away, everything collapses.
And by a "good game" you mean a no turnover game
Bull and Bones get ready, I'm coming for you!
The problem is that he is only good about 30% of the games. He's a terrible quarterback. It's time for everyone to accept that. Stop making excuses for him
Yeah he made some absolutely terrific throws, but he is always liable to lose the ball. And without any other play makers on offense bad turnovers kill us.
there are some threads popping up that are just beating a dead horse...perhaps on saturday 3 threads should be created: game day thread, love it thread, and hate it thread.
fuck society.
I agree LT is one of our few options, but do you think if LT knew how to put a touch on a pass (to Kline, Coleman, and even Knowles) things might be a little different? If we maybe read between the lines, its not only that the receivers need to improve on catching with the jugs (which they do) but maybe also LT has no idea how to have the QB IQ on when and where to drill or touch pass. LT should also know well after the 1st quarter what his "time" is in the pocket. Again, this is something a thinking QB learns and adjusts to every game, something they have to adjust to every game because it changes each time, one that we fail at.
LT does carry the load, and we can put him on any team we want and he excels, but he is on our team and has to adjust to what we have.
He continues to lead, but it is what it is. Lets Go Hokies and play tough the rest of the year.
It's not just our fans. It reflects our instant gratification, boom-or-bust society.
There is no reason for the RBs to have had 9 carries today. None. RBs have to get in a rhythm to produce, especially our RBs. But they have never gotten a chance.
And we have pass-catchers not named Knowles and Coles that can pretty much be counted on more often than not. It's time we actually caught up to that fact.
The title of this thread is ridiculously hyperbolic.
People using ad hominem attacks on anyone critical of LT are being equally ridiculous. Don't let it get to you.
Yep. Saw that. The D didn't lose this game for us. We just gave BC the ball in critical moments or with good field position. Bonner was ok where he started the play but read the play terribly and came too far up and way too far to the right, which I don't get because why would you not stay closer to the outside if possible in order to force the ball carrier back to the middle where the rest of your defenders are??
I actually tried to make sure that my comment clearly implied what you are saying by avoiding saying that "we control our destiny" as well the qualifier at the end. Guess it didn't work lol

IMHO, the single best thing about Logan Thomas' career coming to a close is that next year, the read option will hopefully be either removed from the playbook entirely or dialed back considerably. (I'd strongly prefer the former.)
French has opined here in the past that it's not the kind of offense that Scot Loeffler prefers to run and that the only reason he's leaning so heavily on it this year is that, due to personnel limitations, he thinks it gives us our best chance of moving the ball on the ground. I sincerely hope that he's right and that next year, when we hopefully have some better RBs (Marshawn Williams, DJ Reid, maybe Shai McKenzie) as well as a QB who's not 6'6", 250+, we'll see a more traditional running game.
I don't have anything against the read option per se, but we simply don't run it all that well with Thomas
