It sounds dumb, but honestly, I just weighted the different variables the way I thought they ought to be weighted. I'm far from a math major, but the results I found when testing these particular coefficients seemed legit, so I just went with it. It did take a good bit of tinkering to come up with the final formula.

Hmm..., this sets up for the possibility that VT football could end the year ranked higher nationally than VT basketball ranked in the ACC. I don't think that's ever happened in ACC play, has it?

Eh, nevermind. Just looked it up, it happened in 2005 and 2007. In 2005, VT finished 7th nationally in football and 10th in ACC basketball standings. In 2007, VT finished 9th nationally in football and 10th ACC basketball standings. Nothing new here.

Was going to upvote you for the world's greatest dessert, Dutch Apple Pie (VA apples, I hope) a la mode, and then you ruin it all with the cheese comment. Pie saboteur, you are, Yoda says.

Patience is going to be key with the program. I remember when Seth Greenburg became coach the 1st goal was to simply make the Big East tournament since the two worst teams in Big East play were not invited.

I believe there is a difference between game-breaker and having break-away speed. I think all game-breakers must have break-away speed, but just because one has break-away speed does not make him a game-breaker. In my opinion, a game-breaker is one that consistently makes you go "wow, did he really just do that?" From what I've seen of Edmunds, Coleman, and Knowles, only Edmunds has had a game-breaker type play (the run against Alabama). However, since then, I haven't seen that wow play. Maybe, one (or all of them) will turn into game-breaker athletes, but right now, I don't see it. Although, I do see major potential in Edmunds.

I agree, but he is the most athletic player and the only player that would be able to get to the point of attack before Boyd (or similar) gets huge gains. As great as Edwards and Tyler are, neither of them have the closing speed to catch that athletic QB. So, I see two scenarios in which Bud could use Dadi as a spy. A Dime-like package (which I would call the Dadi package) where Dadi replaces Edwards as the LB and spy in passing plays, such as 3rd and long in which Edwards would have been the spy anyways. The second would be Dadi in for Collins at DE, bring an overloaded blitz on the opposite side of Dadi. Boyd (or other athletic QB) would see this, and take off. Dadi, instead of rushing, slides back to the middle of the field to spy Boyd, and follow him to the tackle.

Do I think Bud will use either of these ideas? Probably not. He's much smarter than me and would figure out better ways to use Dadi. But with a skill-set ad good as Dadi, you have to find a way to get him on the field more. And it's not a secret that Edwards and Tyler are not fast enough for the more athletic QBs.

In all reality, VT won't face too many running QBs, only UMD and Duke. And, in my opinion, only CJ Brown of UMD is the type of athletic QB that will give Foster's Defense fits. So, we'll see how Foster handles those games. Perhaps, if VT wins out, it will face aTm in the Orange Bowl. If this were to happen, then I say you must use Dadi as a spy. Manziel is just too good of an improvisor not to have a spy on 80% of plays.

What the hell kind of name is Dabo? He isn't even the highest paid person in HIS football program..of course he needs to talk more or everyone at Kilpson will know he is a moron. Yab-a-Dabo-do.

I laughed so hard I pissed myself. Hope you don't mind I shared thekeyplay.com on my fb. Way too freaking funny.

UCF, cuz I respect Bridgewater, but not the whole team
Florida, cuz no Franklin
UCLA, cuz they can score a bunch, and play some D
Auburn, cuz I am done with aTm's joke of a D
UDub, cuz they are due for a rebound win
FSU, cuz it's about time for Klempson to choke, and I want to see my little brother cry (he married into a Klempson family, then got converted, the fool)

turkey leg for the HP reference, but sadly those movies were ruined for me on the trumpet bus on the way to and from the sugar bowl. We watched every. single. movie. in. a row. I wanted to strangle whoever brought all of them and kept playing them...

I would guess around 50-60 hours. I watched 34 games worth of Tech passing plays, and I would say those took about 40 minutes on average, depending on how many passes Logan threw. I mean, he only had 19 passing attempts against Appalachian State in 2011 and 49 against North Carolina in 2012, so there's obviously some disparity there. Plus all the time to log/compile the data, come up with the formula and write this post.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I really appreciate it.

We are definitely gonna suck this year, I don't think any realistic fan will argue that. What I think will be fun to watch is how well JJ's 40 minutes of Hell game plan works. At the beginning of last year it was obvious that he wanted to run the whole time, but that wasn't possible with such a short bench so we had to rein it in and that cost us some wins. This year we have a full roster, so there is no reason we shouldn't be able to at least attempt to do that. I know there are a lot of freshman on the team, but I just want to see what that kind of game plan would look like.

Zach - just curious, but how much time did you put into this project? Very impressive!
