Their front seven absolutely whipped Ohio up front for the first half, and while their other opponents are weak, Ohio is one of the better offensive teams in the MAC. The Herds DT's shoot the gaps hard and will be disruptive. The onus is on Caleb Farris & Andrew Miller to stop their penetration.
To me, their secondary fell apart as soon as the QB for Ohio extended a play. Guys were wide open everywhere. That is their weak area.
Embedded.

I'm actually okay with this.

This is the most disturbing quote in the entire write up. I feel like I should send you some of my old phones.
YES! Freshman year, first VT game experience ever was an ESPN Thursday night game, sitting in the SEZ bleachers, afraid that the old wooden planks would crack and we'd all die when BC was on offense, and it was all for not because we ran out of time.
Then the Cincy game, our last ever shutout I believe, in the rain, miserable.
But then... the rest is history.
Thanks for another excellent article, French. Always enjoy reading your stuff.
Question: Do you have any explanation for the almost total lack of misdirection plays called by Scot Loeffler in this game? I kept waiting for a designed cutback run against the grain, a QB bootleg with the TE dragging across the middle, or a reverse, but none ever came.
It really seemed to my untrained eye that the ECU defensive front was totally selling out on the first movement of our OL and RBs with the backside pursuit often cheating aggressively up the line play-side. So I was thinking that some misdirection plays could both a) go for big yardage, and b) help keep the ECU defenders at home for just a fraction of a second longer, since they would have to respect the possibility of something coming back at them heading the other way.
Thoughts? Was Loeffler possibly sandbagging the playbook until the Georgia Tech game?
Marshall is ranked 76th in defense when adjusting for the opponent. However, there still is a small sample set.
Beat them up physically every time they touch the ball and we will be fine. All of their playmakers on offense outside the tight end are under 6 foot and 180 lbs. Hit them early and often and the turnovers will be there for the taking.
GaTech
Tennessee - only because the line is way too high
Irish - mostly because it doesn't seem like Missagain St. hasn't played anyone yet
Would love to pick ASU, but can't so Stanford
Aubie - only because I think this could be Gus Malzahn's coming out party
Utah - because one doesn't pick teams that lose to LOLUVA
And for the beer:

Someone talk me off the ledge here.
They have the pass the ball in the same weather we do. Relax. Even playing field. Consider the level of competition that Marshall has faced when looking at their rushing defense stats. It's not telling the whole story if you ask me.
Never before have I been so ashamed to be a 49ers fan. My grandfather would be turning in his grave if he knew this was how even a part of the fan base thinks (and wasn't currently in a little box on my mom's shelf, but whatever).
going to be tough on the Herd as well! They are not exactly going to pound you into submission on the ground!
So what you're saying is that it was in fact fixed.

"I'm definitely going to give them both a look," Boyd said about U.Va. and Tech. "They both offered me kind of early, so I'm going to respect that and take them both into consideration."
Winning cures a load of ills.
Something just struck me and now I've got a bad feeling about this game: the weather.
When we had trouble rushing the ball we were able to rely on Logan's arm and the (incrementally) improving play of the receivers to bail us out. Even then we've had a case of the dropsies. But the ECU game showed that we were good enough through the air to be able to extend drives and eeked out a win.
But this weekend looks to be a total shitshow weather wise and this will be the first time our passing offense has had to play in adverse conditions. The past three games have been in a climate controlled dome, under a gorgeous day in Blacksburg and a similarly nice day in Greenville last weekend. This weekend it's supposed to rain like crazy. And, on paper, the rushing defense is comparable and possibly better than what we managed 53 yards against last week.
Winning this game through the air is going to be a very tough test for our offense. Someone talk me off the ledge here.
I decided to go ahead and ask:

I got mine in summer of 2007. It has myriad problems. Where to start...
A year in, the battery life was 10 minutes. Replaced.
1.5 years in, hard drive fried. Replaced.
2 years in, the battery life was 10 minutes. Parents replaced.
2.5 years in, case snapped at edges of keyboard because I was holding it by the front edge. Replaced.
3 years in, the battery life was 10 minutes. Gave up.
3.5 years in, it got a death rattle (fan makes loud growling noises). Mostly useless to take to class.
4 years in, I graduated. I have only used it about 4 times since then.
A lot of that criticism is justified though. Football teams are supposed to win and teams that had success are expected to win more. I wouldn't say it is "if your not first, you're last" it's more along the lines of "if the stove is hot and burns, don't touch it a second, third, fourth, and fifth time." It's not as if the problems with the program in recent years has been sporadic. It was a systemic failure that was never corrected. Last year was the boiling point and the problem has at least been seriously looked at, but it's a few years too late and the fan.
My entire four years, while amazingly fun and exciting, was extremely frustrating at times. Committing the same mistakes year in and year out. Almost every game I would here older alumni and students calling for offensive changes back in '08. I know last year people in my hometown with season tickets weren't going to renew if nothing changed within the program.

Funny. I went to see ODU last Saturday. There were "Thundersticks" being distributed outside the stadium. We opened ours up and inflated them so we could make some noise during the game. The first time I started knocking them together I got a bunch of dirty looks from people around me. I thought to myself "how lame". People rarely stood and the noise level was low in general, even with a sold out stadium. Granted, the game was a blowout against an overmatched opponent, but come on. ODU has a ways to go in my opinion.
What about Case Keenum?

I refuse to believe this is really happening. Surely this is some sort of joke. We've made some BAD decisions regarding helmet and uniform design, but this is beyond any of them. Nobody outside of VT understands what Hokie Stone is or what it means so there is no "brand identity" in this design. Just, no.
