I think guys like Marcus Davis were probably detrimental to the team. When you have senior guys like him with not giving 100 percent it creates a very bad leadership example. I get the feeling that that kind of attitude aint going to fly with the new offensive regime, and we know that doesn't fly on the defensive side. Regardless of talent I think this team returns to what Virginia Tech football is all about this year and going forward.
Part II is here: http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/53712/qa-with-logan-thomas-part-ii.
What do you want to do better, in terms of technique, Xs and Os, and execution?
LT: I think it's just consistency, I just have to be more consistent. I have to take every play one step at a time instead of looking at the whole picture because you can’t control everything. I think that’s going to be the most important thing for me.
YES PLEASE
Greenburg's problem was his personality. Did you see the tweets of approval from Jeff Allen, JT, and other former players when he was fired? Things like "Man I wish I was at tech 4 this news don't want to get my hopes up but if it's wat I this it is shuda happen a long time ago." How can anyone be surprised the program failed when half of the recently graduated players are celebrating the head coach's firing?
As for JJ, Weaver offered to match Clemson's offer. JJ said it wasn't about the money. Clemson isn't Duke, UNC, UCLA; it's essentially a lateral move. If it's not a career move, and it's not a money move, what else could it be about? Weaver never committed to Greenburg because Seth was rude and condescending to every in the athletic department. I've had friends work as student interns for marketing and video in the athletic department - every one of them complained about the way Seth treated/talked down to them.
JJ is definitely in over his head, but it was because of the way the program was handed over to him (this is Weaver's fault). I'm confident in JJ's knowledge of the game and coaching abilities, I hope he gets the players he needs and can turn the team around in the next few years.
Not very. Mueller is a slow European PG. Clarke was highly rated early and everyone dropped off him the more they saw him play. Emelogu is the best player we have, but he's very raw....rawer than Robert Brown. Both post players are poor-man's versions of Cadarian Raines, at least 2 years from contributing. And, by then, they'll either have a new coach or transfer.
Clark is a borderline top 100 kid offered by numerous Big 10/12 schools, Emelogu offered by Washington and Marquette, Thompson offered by Ariz State, Miss St, Tennessee. Sooo...
I think that this can be accomplished through 2 things:
1. Tough Nosed coaching
2. Recruiting smart, hard working kids
From everything that we've seen of Grimes so far it seems that he will be good at doing both. I totally agree with the comment that toughness is mental. To quote a great philosopher:"Football is 80% mental and 40% physical."
Are the ceilings high enough that we can we punt in the Greenberg Fieldhouse?
Mental preparedness can be coached.
Two years of regression is enough time to concede defeat. Maybe a change of scenery helped Garland, it wouldn't be the first time that happened to a player. But when a player is consistently getting worse, it's time to move on.
I agree. Player retention was a big focus on moving on past Seth. JJ was supposed to be:
1. A players coach (then you better not have high turnover)
2. Defensive minded (yet we were by far the worst defensive team in the ACC)
3. Familiar with the program (and he came nowhere near close to getting the most out of his first team.)
Downvoted because Ty Garland is showing us that players that struggle early (and annoy the crap out of our fanbase) can be useful if their coach isn't awful.
Very concerned about DJ Coles. Glad to see no huge spikes in weight, that's usually a red flag. I know everyone really likes Nigel Williams, but he's on the highway to Tweener-ville. 270 is too light for DT and too heavy for DE. He will be interesting to watch, to see if he has the David Pugh quickness/drive to make 270 work at DT.
I think Eddie would start over Barksdale or Wood. Just how I see it, seemed to me that JJ gave him every opportunity to turn it around last year so I wouldn't be surprised to see him out there again.
Ugh just the sarcastic comment of dropping a basketball team for a hockey team makes me throw up in my mouth a little...
i think being able to get that 4 yards on just a run using just brutal strength would be a huge step for our team. i felt like we got so far away from just smash mouth football we need that new mentality. i cant wait to see who the starting line will be come aug 31
Damn. DJ Coles will be a tank running around at WR
Seems like hes up to what Marcus Davis was. Now if he can just stay away from the injury bug.
If I recall, he has been trimming fat. I swear I remember him throwing around body fat % that were like Vernon Davis level.
That is one thing I think is skewed here. Weight increase/decrease really depends on what type of pounds they are. I'd rather see a guy trim fat (like Gayle) then just add fat to have a higher weight.
Hold on to your hats folks!
the rumor mill is still churning, brown might not be the only one to leave. . .
If I remember correctly, JCC was doing everything he could to put on weight during Summer '12 to avoid redshirting. I believe that he played in the 180s, possibly even high 170s most of last year, when he wasn't as focused on gaining weight.
Edit: mentioned in this Andy Bitter blog from last fall that he was getting 2 or 3 plates and then going back for seconds and thirds to put on weight going into last fall.

I'm a big LT fan, but I'm a little bit worried about this. It seems like his personality is to lead by example, but he's got to be more vocal if we are going to get tougher...
In theory, Osterloh could just stand there and hold his arms out and do more than some linemen did last year. I like Conte's chances at a breakout season. Would be awesome to see him and Gibson become serious mashers.
Coles added weight is muscle, right? Yeah it's muscle. It's probably muscle. It might not be muscle. Yeah, he might be rough around the edges.
It also looks like the DTs put in some serious work in the weight room the last few months.
Spring ball, let's do this thing. See y'all at the spring game.
If they move Wyatt Teller to O-tackle I think I might cry.
The fact that JC Coleman lost 15 lbs jumps out at me. I don't know if he's trying to slim down or if it's just the offseason.
Parker Osterloh is big.

Well, Rankin has flawless mechanics on his jumper, is a great defender, passer.. There's a reason he played more than Brown towards the end of the season.
Brown has a bad handle, poor shot mechanics leading to extended shooting slumps. I did like his post up game and midrange game, but he needs to get his head straight and that was probably not happening here at VT. Just never seemed to smile or look like he was having fun.
