Sagarin takes into account FBS and FCS, so it isn't just the top 121 as you say. FCS is still Division 1 by definition. It's just called Division 1-AA. Besides, automatic bids don't mean that you are part of an elite group. It just means you were the best of your conference (or made a crazy run like Liberty). Saying that the NCAA tournament represents the top 68 teams in the nation is the same as saying that the BCS represents the top 10 teams in the nation. It may be an exclusive group, but not all teams are elite.

EDIT: FWIW, Sagarin ranks 246 teams across I-A and I-AA.

"I don’t think that enough has been proven with this line to say that there’s a strength anywhere right now."

Thank god for a freaking meritocracy and guys not just ending up in Newsome's doghouse

This sucks.

I know everyone's talking about his abysmal performance this season but let's look at the big picture:

What does JJ want to do when he gets a full arsenal of players next season? Run.
What is Brown's best attriubute right now? He's athletic, an above average defender and does very well taking the ball to the hoop, especially in transition.
It is a PERFECT fit. Yes, he got benched in favor of a walk-on later in the season. Yes, it seemed like he was taking shots with his eye closed, but when he performs well at a Florida school everyone will say "SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT COMING."
Brown would have been a perfect small-ball, pressing 3 along side Adam Smith and the revolving rotation that will be the point guard position. This is a huge loss, especially considering that there will be even more reliance on yet another freshman (Donte Clark) who will inevitably hit the freshman wall.

Maybe I'm over reacting, but I don't think this is something to just scoff at.

I guarantee you he will end up like Ty Garland and Hank Thorns... finding success as soon as they leave Blacksburg.

That said, the biggest loss here is just having that extra body, that extra experience. I'm hopeful that once JJ gets in a couple recruiting classes of his own, going after kids that can run the system he's trying to implement, we should be a bit better off.

But... until then, we might be in for another long year or two.

Man, what a disappointing prospect. When he peaked, he was a very good shooter... but the peak never lasted very long. He couldn't handle the ball, and his defense was nothing spectacular, so when he couldn't shoot, he was a very sub-par player. We will miss the minutes he provided, but other than that, I can't imagine we will miss him all that much. It is a shame things didn't work out for him, but I hope he can become a consistent shooter and find success wherever he lands. I wish he could have stuck around though... I think he can still be a decent player if he works hard.

I'm going to miss making jokes about "Bobby Brown" and his "bricks".

Hopefully he'll find success like some of our other recent transfers. But I will not miss his inconsistent play & his remarkable brick laying ability. Markus Sailes had a better jumper than ol Bobby Brown.

I think this is another strike on James Johnson's ability to manage this program effectively. I am not sold one way or another on his ability yet and wont hold one season against him, but I would think keeping your third most active player in the program would not be that big a challenge. I have not been impressed the few times I have heard coach speak publicly, and hope that this is just a speedbump not a first of many. We cant seem to keep scholarship players around which is worrisome.

Hope tight ends and full backs are ready to get nasty in the running game as well! Beiro sure looked tough before his injury and I think malleck and McCray will mash!

I have no ill-will towards the kid, and I think this has a lot to do with location. But if he thinks he will be in a better situation than playing off EG this year and JE/CR/AS(?) next year in a wide open system like JJ's, good luck.

They should throw me in there. I can probably bench a solid 1 rep with just the bar.

I think we can still agree that the 97th best football team and the 97th best basketball team are far different animals. Id' say that FGCU upsetting Georgetown is more like some team unranked, but still a contender upsetting a top-10 team. The 97th best football school is a basement dweller. Like Duke pre-Cutliff bad. It's just not the same. Is it an upset? Of course. But it's just that. Not "the worst loss in program history" bad.

Tip of the spear!

Andy Bitter interviewed Jeff Grimes today (I strongly encourage everyone to follow Andy at https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT) and read the full interview as soon as it is published to his blog.

Some comments reflect exactly what we have predicted here:

From @AndyBitterVT I asked Grimes if he felt better about interior line. "They do have more experience, but that doesn’t mean they’re better players," he said. "There’s no reason we couldn’t come out of spring and say our 2 tackles are strength of our o-line. I know that’s counterintuitive but again, I don’t think that enough has been proven with this line to say that there’s a strength anywhere right now."

Kudos to Andy for a great story on Loeffler this morning as well. http://blogs.roanoke.com/andybittervirginiatechfootball/2013/03/26/catch...

There are 347 division 1 mens basketball teams. Being in the top 100 still puts you in the top third of the country. There were at the time of the JMU game there were 120 FBS teams (121 if you count JMU for this comparison).
94th out of 347 teams is not nearly the same as 97th out of 121 teams. I'm sorry, there's just no comparison here. And that's not even taking into account the fact that FGCU just tore through another tourney team.

so JJ is helping Brown find a new school

Still not that big! But at least it is higher than his paper-weightish number from last season.

Mistakes happen. Things don't always mesh. There are two teams on the field and too often we discount the man on the other side of the ball doing their job.

But, attitude is about going out and if you make a mistake, getting a helmet on helmet and staying there until the whistle blows. Attitude is about practicing the right way and letting that muscle memory go wild on Saturday. Attitude is about improving every day. 2012 was a fail on all these fronts for the OL. That has to change, or I promise you, Grimes will find guys who have the right attitude and some vaunted upper classmen will be picking splinters out of their behinds.

Nope, MASH was intended. I want every running play to look like a large bulldozer is driving through a crowded sheep pen.

I think Beiro, as long as his shoulder is healing well, can be that guy. If Wright adds weight, then obviously he could be the future for the position, but I think it is Beiro's job to lose this year.
Of course I also think if he wasn't 5"9' that he would have been a linebacker as well, but height isn't something you can teach. (Just ask the basketball team)

According to his Instragram, he current weighs around 174 lbs. He will be one to watch for in the spring.

Oglesby was a hard-nosed running back. It was a shame he didn't get that many touch because it always seem it went for long gain because defense were more prepared to stop David MF Wilson.

Again, I want to know if Loeffler plan to bring back old fullback plays like the fullback sweep, dive, and blast that Stinespring used to call before Evans/Williams/Wilson came to Blacksburg.

The Hokies' Big 3 (Thomas, Gayle, and Exum) have to step up.

That said,

LET'S GO, HOKIES! #BEATTHESNOTOUTOFBAMA

Everyone from the Frankinator on down is holding themselves accountable. Good news.

Got that right.
