Diferent values for the kick distance. Long field goals worth fewer points than short ones.
to give her the traffic by clicking that link.
Why keep this thread going?
That's a good point. If Zabian Dowdell were on this team with the style of offense JJ runs, I'd say he would be scoring the same amount of points Erick is.
We could win an NC and HD would still find a way to criticize us. I read her blogs for humor now.
HD is probably immune to all our criticisms by now. The criminole and candy cane faithful resent her just as much as we do. She favors clemson for next season, which probably means they'll have a spectacular collapse (aka "pulling a Clemson").
I pretty much called exactly how HD would grade us, not that I agree with it in full. On the offensive side, 100% agreement. With the defense, I think what we need to look at is the context. What did the defense mean to our team? They were the only reason we even hung around in a few games, the reason we scared the crap out of FSU for 58:30 and the only reason we won our bowl game. Statistically speaking, not one of our strongest years, and thus in terms of absolutes it wasn't a great year. But given that the only reason we had the (small amount of) success we did suggests the defense deserves a better grade.
The way I see it, offense: F, defense: B (with high marks for improvement), overall: C+
They say this Mizzell guy is pretty good. If he doesn't break his foot kicking cars, he may turn out ok.
And not to get all-UVA on you, because I hate UVA as much as everyone else, but they do have a much greater history of producing NFL running backs than VT. In all reality, it isn't even close.
This got me a little excited. http://www.dumcoach.com/classic/viewthread.php?action=attachment&tid=225...
It doesn't have belly-lead though. Block everyone down on the right side. Leave the end unblocked. The right halfback kicks out the end. Fullback takes a belly crossover step and dives inside the halfback block. QB rides the dive and then runs the option, with the left halfback as a pitch man.
Doug Easlick? Oh no. I am thinking more the NFL offense of the 60's, where you had a pro set with a fullback and a halfback, and both were primary ball carriers. Most teams, fullbacks got at least half of the carries. Jimmy Taylor with the Packers was not only an inside runner, but Green Bay often ran the power sweep with Taylor as the ball carrier and Paul Hornung as the lead blocker. Other greats include Larry Csonka and Joe Perry.
BRING IT BACK.
I quote tweeted the link to it and told her to quit her job. No reply. Bummer.
No one. It's Heather Dinich.
They mean nothing to me. Same goes for her "top 25 players" lists and power rankings, where she pretty much just sorts by overall record and uses H2H then "how good they should be" as tiebreakers.
but I know that the NFL is always trying to reduce the number of kickoff returns, since they claim they are the "most dangerous play in football". I would imagine that it has something to do with the fact that both teams are running full speed at each other, whereas on a punt both teams pretty much start at the LOS and run together and set up the blocks, but there could be other reasons.
I agreed with our offense and special teams grade.
I would nominate our all-maroon looks in both football and basketball there. But the grey unis are pretty good too.
Though I'm not sure that by "last ten years" you don't mean "since the football team last wore all-maroon"
Is there data out there saying punt returns are much more safe than kick returns? Some of the biggest hits I've ever seen occurred on punt returns...
The way it is, the field goal is still a consolation prize for if you get stuffed, or a way to get those 3 points you need in a pinch. It adds complexity to the game.
On the other hand, the kickoff is more extraneous than anything, especially with them making all these changes to increase the percentage of touchbacks. When I first heard Schiano's idea of replacing the on-side kick with a 4th and 15 attempt from the 30, that appealed to me a bit more, because right now the on-side kick is quite the anomaly. Success has more to do with how the egg-shaped ball bounces upon hitting the ground than anything else.
My idea is, why not simply replace the kickoff by giving the offense the ball, essentially 4th and 15 on their own 30 across the board? That way, the vast majority of the time teams are going to punt it anyway, and punts seem to be gallons safer than kickoffs. A 50 yard punt means the returner catches it at his own 20, which should result in similar starting field position anyway since you get more air under the punt allowing you to get downfield more quickly to make the tackle.
I doubt we'd see any large-scale changes like this anytime soon, but Schiano just got me thinking is all.
one of the worst hokie moments in my life
It's hard to argue that it wouldn't make the games more exciting. I'd like to see kickoffs stay, but I'd be perfectly fine with field goals going away.
We should take up a collection.
"Good politician?" I lol'd.
Like slicktrip said, he's a redshirt freshman. Settle.
I don't understand why people dislike JvZ so much. He's practically playing his first year at college. Also like you said European style of play is completely different than here. The bigs are more finesse players than anything. Also, how's he supposed to learn if you never let him play?
and that

I can see where Bayless' coming from, especially from a statistical point of view. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but statistically speaking, teams who go for it on fourth down are more likely to have higher successful conversion rating than those who settle for a field goal.
For example, anybody remember during the Labor Day's game, Paulie Johnson of the Bumble Bees elected to go for it on fourth and 9(?), and Washington was having happy feet to keep looking for an open receiver and found one. Then they converted that fourth down into a new set of downs, which eventually led to a touchdown.
On that merit, Bayless is probably correct in the theory of eliminating field goal attempts, but on a level of excitement, nail-biting and cliffhanging moments, a game can be decided by a field goal.
Another example, the abomination of the Rutgers-Tech bowl game was decided by Journell connecting on the field goal attempt, and Rutgers whiffing badly (WIDE RIGHT! see what I did there?), thusly preserving the win for Tech, and making us float above 0.500.
I think Bayless should be arguing more that teams should go for it more on fourth downs instead of settling for threes. This is not the Canadian Football League with only 3 downs.
Then again, it is Bayless and nobody likes him. Yeti is more likable than Skip Bayless. Heck, even Skip to My Lou is more likable than that buffoon named Bayless. He needs to quit baying at the moon, and get a real paying job like us poor common, Hokies loving fans.
