My fear is that a preseason ranking would hurt us if we lose to bama. I think we would be fighting an uphill battle if we drop from the rankings after a week 1 loss. However, if we do lose, and we start the season unranked, our upcoming games would hold more weight and with decisive wins, it would outweigh the bama loss. To be ranked an immediately lose would come across as another tech team being seen as overrated. But to start unranked and to win out with a bama loss would seem more as an improved tech team that corrected mistakes and evolved.

There are some major differences though. In 04, we lost KJ and DLo early not to mention some other guys that we lst like EW and I believe Jake Grove. Additionally, Bud's d was pretty bad in 03, especially in November and the bowl. Noone thought we would be able to turn that around in a year like Bud did. This year, the core components are coming back and we have a QB that with a good year could play himself back into a top 10 pick. As much as we all loved Bryan after 04, he wasn't going to be a NFL QB.

But it strikes me as highly unlikely that we would be ranked at the start of next year. I don't believe we were ranked going into FedEx Field to play #1 USCw a few years ago. So that angle (hyping the opening context) may not be valid. Although lots has changed in the media landscape since then.

Better question though: Just how far from unranked would be jump up after we #BEATBAMA?!?!

Don't forget the impending discussion of the "offensive transformation" that everyone is expecting. I agree with the original post, strong odds that we get a pity ranking just to increase ratings and buzz.

'Due to the fact that the Hokies have really only had Bud Foster going for them this past handful of years, we have decided to rank them 22nd in the preseason polls. This is solely based on the fact that we are deathly afraid of Bud Foster, and none of us here at ESPN wants to be choked out with our own intestines due to underestimating him.'

I don't think we will be, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if we were because of exactly what you said. In the end it doesn't matter though, if we #BeatBama then we'll be around 10th by week 2.

Simply just for the hype of that first game. Maybe somewhere in the low 20s, and the excuse would be 'strong defense' and some talking points about 'Beamer ball'

No way in hell a one loss Alabama team (with that loss being Virginia Tech) makes it to the NCG over an undefeated Virginia Tech team. If it's that exact scenario, then we would be voted in over Bama, just on the fact that we beat them head to head. At least that's what I would expect to happen.

EDIT: I know you're probably not really serious in saying that either haha

We will beat them and they will still probably end up in the NC....I can hear Mark May now making the case for a 1 loss SEC team over an undefeated VT, regardless of the fact that we beat them already. That's how teh SEC rolls....

They're betting that the NCAA won't do that to them. They have an overinflated view of themselves. The BE and the ACC doesn't help that either. They have gone into full blown cover mode. I wish "journalists" would go after them on this and the girl who committed suicide over the alleged sex assault by a football player.

Was it him, the media, ND administration, or the public?

While all the feel good stories were circulating why was there no fact checking?

It was all working in ND's favor, the big media and personalities that support ND, the ND fans, and general public willing to give sympathy. It probably influenced a few Heisman voters and gave ND a boost in the polls.

Couldn't let the facts get in the way until the season was over. A lot of people wanted ND to "be back".

There are a lot more questions now plus conspiracy theories.

I don't think it was all planned. I think it was something that started as a tiny fib, gained momentum and got out of control. Everyone was naive and we all now feel stupid.

Does this hurt or help ND?

agreed on Saban.

What will happen though are gratuitous camera shots of their fans in disbelief sitting in the stands watching their team staring down 0-1, all because they underestimated us.

And he clearly must have lied about talking to her on the phone every night, because the profile was run by that guy. So either he was hamming up the relationship for the media, or he was in on the fake. I lean towards the latter.

What I want to know is if he was so in love with this girl and she supposedly died, why wasn't he at the funeral? And even if he actually thought he was in an online relationship with a real person, they never skyped or anything ever? He just assumed she was real? #donotbelieve

Throughout Saban's career at Bama, he has made a point not to overlook teams. Even teams like Western Kentucky and Florida Atl get their A game. I think it would be foolish to assume that Bama will show up underestimating us. I'm hoping that we put up a fight due to our own talent. If Scot Loeffler is the QB guru that many are claiming, a consistent LT would give us an advantage. Foster won't let last year happen again and should have a solid game plan to protect against the run and get pressure on AJ. And if Jeff Grimes is OL coach, I think we will see productivity out of our line that we haven't seen in a while.

You should let them know the black diamond trophy looks nice in Blacksburg
