I think a lot of it has to do with the idea of "who we are" as a football team. We are a defense first team.

Also, looking around college football, I so rarely see a team that is dominant on both sides of the ball. The teams that are going to be top 5 in the country in offense often have porous, terrible D; look at WVU, they put up silly numbers but couldn't defend a thing. I don't know if it's a philosophy thing or a talent cap thing.

Lastly, I'm ok with middle of the pack numbers because I want the offense to pound the rock, take their time. That kind of offense can be highly successful, but as far as numbers go, show up as middle of the pack.

That if we made some changes he would stay.. I don't see why he wouldn't want to with Alabama being the first game in my opinion. I have a feeling I WON'T be a happy camper today. Let's cross our fingers.

As does the UPS Doug Flutie commercial and any time ESPN shows a BC game because the Flutie thing is inevitable, and if against Tech, then tied to 07. No game hurts as much.

JMU - I was just numb, didn't care, I was already broken from the Boise St game. The worst losses are ones that take you from a high to a low. I was already low.

Miami '05 I might have honestly blocked from my memory. My only solace was the team followed that up by taking revenge on UVA and absolutely DESTROYING the Hoos. That said, that could have been a NC year, though it was also later followed by...

FSU '05 in the ACCCG - To this day this game is the reason I have to resist the urge to kick a puppy when I hear that damn Chop. I think what pissed me off the most was that the FSU fans around us were practically silent until they started winning and the wheels were falling off.

Sugar Bowl '11 if only for Danny Coale; he deserved to go out a winner and he earned it too, but got it taken away from him by lucky bounces and horrendous officiating - the overturned call and the mystery second in the first half that should have run off before Michigan got to kick a field goal.

Any loss to Paul Johnson's GT - just so frustrating to watch them eat an entire quarter on a single drive.

Another thing I think about is the injury risk. He has survived two seasons of being hammered without injury. He will be the focal point of our offense again next year and a simple QB dive that results in an early season ending injury and he will be aimlessly applying for jobs everyday like the of his graduating class.

are reporting (and I use that word carefully) that Logan will declare for the draft. I really don't trust either site, but its speculative news and it should be passed along.

Honestly, I'm not expecting Loeffler to get us a consistently top 20, or top of the ACC offense.

That seems to be the general mindset of the vast majority of our fans, which I find very interesting. As a program that has won as consistently as we have, why are we letting past offensive performance dictate expectations for future performance? Just because our offense has been poor in the past doesn't mean it should be poor in the future, right?

Here's the fascinating part to me... The fanbase seems generally satisfied with this hire. Or at the very least, there are just as many fans who are "happy" or "ok" with the hire as there are fans who don't like it. Now, imagine for a second that Bud left and Beamer had to hire a new DC. How many fans would be happy if we hired a guy with 2 years of DC experience, both of which resulted in total defense rankings in the bottom half of the nation? Regardless of the circumstances that led to those rankings, I doubt few if any fans would be ok with that. It just goes to show how much the Stinespring era has effected our expectations and how large the gap is between that and our defensive expectations.

Moorehead caught passes from Peyton Manning and played in the same WR corps as Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne for 5 seasons. He has a Super Bowl ring.

Loeffler is bros with Tom Brady and coached Tim Tebow.

Grimes has coached 12 NFL offensive linemen and has a National Championship at Auburn.

Compare that with:
Mike O'Cain - recruited (but didn't coach) Phillip Rivers, coached Charlie Whitehurst.

Kevin Sherman - coached all VT WR's that have gone pro since 2006 (Morgan, Royal, Clowney, Harper, Boykin, Coale, etc.)

Curt Newsome - coached all VT linemen 06-10 and just centers and guards 11-12 (Duane Brown, the most successful in the pros, said this: “I didn’t understand exactly how important technique was until I started to play my rookie year... Also, film study plays a huge role in the success of a left tackle, or any position in this league. That was something else I had to learn my first couple of years.” And that doesn't exactly inspire confidence with recruits I'm sure.

Ceiling projections:
2014 Draft -- 8th pick overall, Ryan Tannehill comp. $7.6M guaranteed, $400K base salary.

2013 Draft -- 2nd round pick, Brock Osweiler comp. $1.0M guaranteed, $400K base salary.

So, if you think you can improve from a current status of 2nd round pick to top 10, you come back.

Moderate projections:
2014 Draft -- 2nd round pick, Osweiler, see above.

2013 Draft -- 4th round pick, Kirk Cousins comp. $500K guaranteed, $400K base salary.

This is where it gets tricky, that $900K you could get this year for being a 4th round pick is money you will never get back. Basically, you get schooled in the NFL for a $900K signing bonus, approximately equal to what a 2nd round pick gets if you wait a year.

Speculation on the money part, which is why I said "maybe". However, it certainly wouldn't surprise me. With that being said, I think there's a 0% chance that Beamer hires him either way...

Haven't heard the latter (because holy hell that would be creepy).

Theres this article, from Pat Forde, about the recent probe by the NCAA at Auburn.

Just google the guy (and try and weed through all of the SEC Message Board chatter). He's been pulled off the recruiting trail twice in the last three years (that we know of) by Auburn for self-imposed penalties.

Despite that, he is known as one of the top recruiters nationally, so he's clearly good at it and many say he comes across as a great person. Take it all with a grain of salt.

We're talking more about some academic "help" for recruits that wouldn't qualify normally and maybe some financial "assistance" for the best players every now and then. While Taylor is probably a top 5 recruiter nationally, there is definitely more going on than the NCAA would like to admit. Of course, I'm sure Taylor negatively recruits as well, but that is very common and basically an accepted practice.

but it was clear from tweets that LT holds Whitfield in high regard.

I wouldn't be surprised if he plays a large part in deciding whether or not LT goes pro. Hell, Whitfield may have been consulted on the OC/QB coach search...

I think this is the key point. Too often in most sports it seems that if a new coach doesn't get results in a year or two, he's out the door. We gave Stinespring more than enough chances but Beamer stuck with him. Hopefully Loeffler and whoever he brings in will be given time to recruit and develop players, and within a couple of years we can see if there is hope for long-term success.

It's George Whitfield and I agree .. I have to think that Logan trusts him and has some influence .. With the new rules concerning rookies with the last NFL CBA, there is a lot less risk on teams taking a "chance" on someone like Logan with his possible upside in the 1st round. Max of 4 year contracts, less salary, less guaranteed money. There is a lot more incentive for them to take HIM early (like I said, less risk). That being said, they're businessmen and not stupid. Based on most pundits, there are probably 5 (or so) QBs that will be taken before Logan in the draft. That's definitely not 1st round material and possibly not 2nd round material. I have no clue as to whether he'll stay or not.

was bad (sorry- I put game 3 in, not 4 but yes I was infuriated in that game as well). I was silent after Lindros scored with 10 seconds to go and allowed my adolescent anger boil inside me for two days and may have let it affect some friendships/conversations with members of the opposite sex (by may I mean it most certainly did). Seeing the Rangers fight back time and again in that game with Tikkanen doing his thing (scoring timely goals and pissing Lindros off to no end) just to have a ridiculous backhand get in past Graves and Richter......ugh. Just like the NYJ loss to Steelers in 05, that shot still keeps me up at night sometimes whenever I see a sweet backhand goal.

You mean George Whitfield, they guy who "ruined" Logan Thomas' throwing motion in 3 days, so bad that our staff couldn't fix it in NINE MONTHS?

I hope he didn't believe a word of that claim...

Yes and no. Naturally one of a prospective draftpick's goals is to be drafted as high as possible (especially to justify leaving early). But for a young quarterback coming off an unsuccessful year, he could land in an untenable situation that could do more harm than good. If he goes to a terrible team that needs/wants him to start early or right away and the flaws in his game aren't corrected in time, it could devastate him mentally and put him in a hole he cannot climb out of. It's easy to say, "Oh well he'll get NFL-reps with NFL coaches," but there are so many variables at play that it is never a given path to success. The dude needs work just to get back to his 2011 form against ACC competition; that would be a heck of a leap - though possible - to get him to a place where he can succeed against NFL competition.

If it truly is his perceived potential and God-given physical attributes, than they will more than likely still be around a year from now; a year in which he can attempt to correct his mechanics and improve his QB skills, to go along with being 6'-6"/260. That's just my two-cents.

Are we talking about NCAA violations, like paying for things for kids and their families, or maybe bribing the coaches to put in a good word or whatever?

Are we talking about negative recruiting, where he attacks the other schools the kids are recruiting, pointing out their shortcomings, whether true or not?

Or are we talking about a creepy guy in a trench coat hanging out in dark alleys? "Hey kid, want to play some D-1 football? I have candy..."
