I think VT's mindset should be on themselves

If we promise him "strong consideration" for the HC job, Bud Foster has that much less motivation to stick around when he can find a decent HC job elsewhere. I believe the main reason he has stuck around so long is that he hopes to inherit the team when Beamer retires, and this would be a great place to get that first HC experience.

but I was under the impression that people at tOSU felt the same way about Bollman as we do about our current offensive staff

but, seriously, our bar is set sooooo looowwwwww......

Hiring a coach who has actually coordinated an offense before is literally the threshold for improvement.

And I always thought Bollman was a solid OL coach. His playcalling, especially in the Terrell Pryor era, was pretty Stinespring'ian.

...we could have had him last offseason after the Roethlisbergers (errr...Steelers) fired him. We could have hired him with the promise that he would be strongly considered for Frank's job in 5 years.

Speculating was fun for a while. But it's time to hear that change has been made. Then we can settle in to speculating on how effective that change will be. For 8 months. Ughhh. #BEATBAMA can't get here fast enough!

It just makes it more mind boggling that he is so good yet stinespring is so bad, how he doesn't lose his mind in frustration at the offense is beyond me.

That whole "It'll never happen but..." line got me. I mean, it's not as ridiculous as saying "I wish we'd hire Mike Shanahan to coach our O-Line" or similar, but I guess part of me is just tired of seeing this long list of names that would be great OCs, especially names that are extremely unlikely to end up in Blacksburg, instead of seeing headlines that we have a new one.

I think Shuman is far more likely to start at LT than Gibson or one of the r-Fr like Conte.

Shuman practiced at LT all season while Gibson split time between Guard & RT.

I've also read some speculation that Farris will stay @ C and Miller will switch to LG, although I don't know if that's insider buzz or just someone's speculation/dream.

I'm not so sure we're overloaded with talent at RB as much as we're overloaded with bodies.

or first line of Joe's comment? Haha. But you guys are right. Phenomenal hire that will never happen...

After the secondary's slow start this season I am not in favor of any more juggling of the DBs.

Keep Bonner @ FS, Jarrett @ Rover, Exum at BC and Kyle Fuller @ FC. I think moving Kyle Fuller to FS and starting Kendall Fuller would be a bad idea. Kyle may be the QB of the secondary but his strength is tackling and run support near the LOS and taking him even further from that role isn't wise.

Let Kendall fight with Manning for the #2 FC slot and bring them on the field in nickel situations, moving Kyle Fuller to Nickel/Whip

If Fisher can make a push for playing time @ FS/ROV then all the better.

We did not run a Power I offense. We ran an I-formation offense. The Power I has been our goal-line formation for many years, but it has never been a typical/standard formation for us.

Our problem in the running game has been that our O line doesn't play fast and agressive because our O line coach sucks. There's too much emphasis on positioning and shielding and not enough on just blasting your man to the turf. As a result we're decent at pass blocking and terrible at run blocking. Prior to that, when stinespring was the OL coach, we were good at run blocking and mediocre at pass blocking. What we really need is an OL coach who can teach both techniques.

didn't fully understand the distinction. I still find it difficult to believe that there are schools that have a much lower academic standard for incoming athletes than we do...

but why would he come here? He is interviewing for NFL HC vacancies after leading the Colts to the playoffs, with a rookie QB, one year after a 2-14 season, as the acting head coach. No way he moves down to the college level AND takes what essentially amounts to a demotion in the process, not when the Colts would really like to hang onto him...

is getting the best out of the OL. Would it be surprising to anyone if the starting 5 at OL in the first game were:

LT: Gibson
LG: Farris
C: Miller
RG: Benedict
RT: Shuman or Conte

I'm looking forward for a new OL coach to get in there and say, "Well, what do we have here? Every spot is open, blank slate, let's play the best players even if they are young or have previously been in the doghouse."

I contend we have a lot of OL talent, time to find the right guys and actually teach them some technique!!!

"He's too small to get more carries than that and be effective I think."

There are backs his size all over the place that are really, really effective. His biggest comp to me is Dion Lewis, recently of Pitt. Behind a big OL, a small back can be very effective. Lewis is 5'8", 195. Maybe JCC is 5'7", 190. Lewis is currently on the Eagles roster.

I've got two thoughts on JCC:

1. He was really poorly utilized this year. His inexperience didn't help, but we didn't commit to him. I thought the problem was that he DIDN'T get 10+ carries a game.

2. He's not Dion Lewis. Again, inexperienced, but maybe his skill just isn't good enough. Many times he fell at first contact, he failed to push for that extra yard for a first down, he ran into the back of one of his (non) blockers.

JCC may never turn out to be anything at VT, but that is probably due to Edmunds/Harris or our inability to commit to JCC or JCC's skill level.

It will not be due to his size.

If we hire Jim Bollman in any capacity I will make one of those YouTube video were I burn all of my Tech stuff in a trash can. The Fridge would have been an appealing prospect a few years ago, but why now? He's been out of the game, and would he put in the long hours on the recruiting trail...

FuMA and Hargraves are prep schools, you go there to increase your SAT so you can get in with your HS GPA (or vice versa, I can never keep it straight which one of those you can improve on). That's what Harris has been doing, but if doesn't get the SAT score, he will need to go JUCO (mostly schools in Kansas, Mississippi or California) which means he can't get in at VT because he will lack the HS GPA and SAT.
