get the shit kicked out of them.
We've been needing these huge runs at the start of the second half all season, to pull away from the terrible teams we should definitely be beating, and to stay in the games against the better teams. And the last 5 games or so we haven't been getting those out-of-halftime runs, in addition to a whole lot of other issues.
And besides, that early season 7-game win streak wasn't ever worth much. One of those games was against a genuinely good team (Oklahoma State), one more against a team projected to finish in the RPI top 100 (Iowa), one more against a team projected to finish in the RPI top 200 (Rhode Island) and 4 teams projected to finish outside of the RPI top 300. If we can manage a winning record (requiring a 7-11 run through the ACC) I will be pleasantly surprised.
How did UVA do in their bowl game?
VT wins. The neers lose. = Great Bowl weekend
I didn't get to watch this game, but it looks like everyone is just ice cold right now. We don't need Eddie and Brown to be playing well in order to win, but at least one of them needs to be. Just really unlucky timing that both of them are cold at the same time. I'll be at the game at Maryland next weekend, hopefully we can turn it around there.
He commented, "That's one way of saying they shit the bed"
Watching them "play," it sure looked like they were sh**ing down their legs.
I didn't think their loss to Syracuse was that bad.
For what it is worth (and the importance of having a good OL coach), Stanford's five OL starters consist of four three star recruits (by Rivals) and a two star recruit at center. NFL draftees like Jonathan Martin and David DeCastro were three star recruits.
GREAT TEACHING mixed with the right skill set is a DANGEROUS combo. See Bud Foster's defense. If it is Hamilton, he must bring the right OL coach.
Our recent struggles feel like a lack of preparation - it seems to take us almost a full half until we're playing good basketball.
Have to think that our lack of depth has forced JJ to scale back practices and that's costing us at the start of games.
There are a lot of instances of coaches switching jobs at the end of the season and bringing "their" recruits to a new school with them. It's recruiting, and you never know what's going to happen. I don't think Newsome will be able to sell Bucky on JMU (LOL at the notion), and Carlis going all the way out to Purdue doesn't seem too likely.
Each kid is different, some really make a strong connection with their recruiter, others the school, others the system they'll play under, ..., there are a million different reasons why a kid commits and signs. It's no secret that our offensive looked anemic this season, but if the change is for the better, i.e. we bring in a high profile, successful offensive coordinator, we'll be able to sell that to commits before signing day.
I think the staff will be able to keep this class together, and hopefully the new coaches won't lose momentum with the 2014 kids, because to me, that's a bigger worry.
I think we'll see the hires before Logan declares for the draft or not (I think January 15th is the deadline)
When he said he wasn't sure about returning or not after the bowl game, it sounded like who the coaches were next year had a large effect in his decision. He would be more inclined to stay if we had a new OC and QB coach that is known to put talent into the NFL (Pep), versus who we have now. So I think Frank will try to hire before January 15th to give Logan time to decide.
If we make a solid hire, I don't know why any of the recruits would leave.
on who Frank has in mind for the job. If it's a high profile hire (Hamilton) it could be as soon as Jan 2.
with CFB's philosophy about controlling the game by running the ball. If Frank can bring him in, this could fill the trophy case eventually.
I agree, Stanford has plenty of cash. However, a few people have mentioned to me that David Shaw still runs the show offensively out there. Pep might want to come to a place where he's the man, and maybe that, in additional to being closer to family, is a compelling enough offer.
He has graduated, so unless he wants a masters, I can't see how he wouldn't go unless the draft board tells him that he won't be picked.
I think he is a hell of a football player, and VT has a better chance to beat Bama with him than without him. A competant staff and running game will bring the player we saw in 2011 back.
Reasons he would leave Stanford
1) Close to home
2) Complete autonomy
3) Cash money
I hope it happens, and I pray he brings a top notch OL coach. If it happens, it is a huge opportunity at NFL futures for Malleck, McCray, and Duan Perez-Means, as Stanford uses tons of power sets and the Hokies will be very thin at wideout next year.
I have talked the Harbaugh tree up so much. I can't believe it could possibly happen.
I don't care one way or another on what he does. If he comes back then hopefully a new offensive staff can fix him. If he doesn't then I trust Leal to be good next season, and the worst case scenario would be Bucky Hodges. I think he should leave because I don't see him improving his draft stock next year, take your 2nd or 3rd round selection and see if an NFL coach can have better luck fixing you than O'Cainspring.
If Ocainspring stays:
He has done well when he has got in the game. His arm looks good and he can escape when needed. With Drew coming (and maybe Edumunds) to help JC, I think our run game will look better if we go back to our old-boring-but-kinda-somewhat-effective-when-we-have-a-mobile-qb offense. For those reasons and a few more, I wouldn't be too worried if LT decided to go. Maybe a 3 on the worried scale, 10 being panic, if we can go back to the offense that fostered the run game.
If we get new offensive staff:
Won't really know what to expect, but I still feel confident in Leal from what I've seen of him through the years. I've seen him throw some passes in tight windows and move the chains. He has some mobility and that's never bad in college football. Plus, I don't think you can get too much worse that some of the stuff we've seen this year from our qb/offense.
That being said, I still hope LT stays.

I'm surprised he didn't cut the sleeves off his jersey before he went on the field, highlighted with his jersey cut to above the belly button.
Those are all legit reasons to go, but might be the only ones.

The refs were driving me crazy. So many biased/blown calls. A few against Rutgers but the majority against Tech. For a while there it seemed like penalties were only being called on Rutgers in situations where the penalty would be declined. (e.g. holding by OL on an incomplete 3rd down pass)
