I'm sad I can only award 1 turkey leg to this. That's EXACTLY what we need.
The OC calls a package and that group of personnel goes in. RB coach can make suggestions about who plays/gets carries, but that's about it. It's pretty much the standard entry-level coaching position, especially for a guy who's a good recruiter but never really had a "specialty" (Shane played long snapper in college). Like many have said, I wouldn't be opposed at all to Shane taking over the special teams. Between his own playing experience, his dad and his stops around the SEC, he's probably seen enough to really know what he's doing.
With how thin our secondary is, my best guess would be that they'd rather forgo the big-play opportunities on punt returns to make sure none of our freshmen corners got burned for TD's against bigger receivers if he was to get injured (FSU game, anyone?).
He's from Charlotte, his family still lives there, he went to school in DC and he recruits VA/DC for Stanford. Blacksburg is worlds closer to all of those things than Palo Alto.
I was kinda hoping to hear that coming out of the tunnel for the second half.
Can't think of a better way to send out friends who just aren't getting the job done than by letting them take other jobs and "pursue different challenges and opportunities" instead of simply firing them. Not many coaches like Beamer out there.
I can tell you the fan base does NOT care enough about their program to insist on retaining their OC. If Harbaugh can leave, so can Hamilton. Now, whether or not their AD wants to shell out the cash to keep him is a much different debate. That said, apart from the money, I don't see a reason to leave Stanford for Tech.
Or find a way to get their AD a job with the NY Jets...
This has to be a ploy to get a raise. Stanford is a completely lateral move and there is no reason for him to move. Stanford may be cheap, but they have a fanbase with some influence that believes in it's football team. I have to believe Stanford can easily equal any payment VT would offer, or John Elway would personally fire their AD.
That would be a lunch pail team, offense and defense.
WVU getting hammered today made all of this 10x sweeter. Tech > your team
..let's hire the most qualified guy we can for the position? They don't need to have played at VT or coached here. Just hire the best guy. Pretty good chance that Bryan Randall isn't the most qualified guy out there.....
From ESPN.com piece on Stanford HC David Shaw
Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton had a motto printed on every (Stanford) offensive playbook: "Pound 'em and score 50."
While Glennon may be a more polished quarterback at the moment, most teams, especially those with established quarterbacks, are going to draft based on potential after the first round or so. Say you're a GM in the second or third round and you can either take Glennon or Logan- you almost have to take Logan, make him your backup, and hope he develops into a star. With Logan, you have that possibility. With Glennon, I personally don't think you do. The ceiling is just so high with Logan, while Glennon's ceiling is more of an average NFL quarterback who may get you 8 wins in a good year.
However, I'll be the first to admit that Logan has looked bad at times this year, partially due to his supporting cast but also partially due to poor mechanics and bad decision-making. He definitely could use another year of refinement in college but I think he's out the door and will likely go in the 2nd or early 3rd round.
Totally agree. Players like Tweedy is what this program was built on. Undervalued and undersized players that come in to the program, work hard, and play every snap like they have something to prove. No entitlement, no egos; just hard-nosed football. Tweedy took it as his personal responsibility to make the tackle on every single punt. In my opinion, Tech would be much better off getting back to their roots with that kind of hard-nosed/chip-on-our-shoulder/lunchpail attitude that Tweedy played with(hopefully with a Pep Hamilton run offense) than trying to transform into something there not with the more finesse and speed-based pistol/spread offenses.
I can't think of any source I read that carries an agenda. What's the point of that?
If you ask Tom O'Brien, he would tell you that Glennon is a better QB than that guy playing for Seattle right now. If that's true, I'd draft Glennon 1st round. Although, I doubt anyone considers O'Brien to be a great evaluator of NFL talent.
How do you know Mark Leal is not an answer? He has done fairly well in the spring games and has great athleticism. He'll be a runner with passing ability, but his ability on offense will depend on scheme. If they hire a guy like Kleinikus to run pistol, he'd be much better suited to run that offense than Logan. Plus, it seems every Hokie to come out of Atlantic High turns into a stud.
I immediately thought the exact same thing.
I just hope there is a plan in all of this...
Beamer = Total Class Act.
Wish some of his detractors at FireStinespring would recognize this from time-to-time.
Players like Tweedy are what make programs go from good to great. 2 star kid who nobody cared about at all coming into college, and by his senior year he took advantage of every single opportunity and was playing an important role on defense and special teams. He played as hard as he could on every play; didn't have the raw ability, but he worked hard and that's all you can ask for out of someone. I think he'll get a shot in the NFL, but probably by a local team like the Panthers, Redskins, Ravens or Steelers just because they probably saw him play the most.
That seems like the most likely thing. Beamer doesn't want to embarrass anyone, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a couple weeks to find another job. But I really hope he's been having conversations with other coaches to replace them during the last month.
Stop posting damnit! I need to stay ahead of you. This week long vacation definitely isn't helping my turkey leg situation.
Which might be why it'll probably be too good to be true.

Grabbing the pants.
