some QBs on that game just suck in 2014 after Logan left Leal was rated 99 through offseason progression and i couldn't do jack with him and then started 88 rated Gresh most of the season lol.
The minority community isn't as vibrant or deep.
I have one change... Pitt and Syracuse would almost certainly rather play each other than BC or Louisville.
Or, why not go the route Tom O'Brien suggested before he was canned, and split into Old vs. New, with the 7 remaining charter members of the ACC in one division and the 7 "newcomers" (including Florida State) in the other.
In that case, the only of your rivalries that would be broken up is either the Battle of the Techs or the Commonwealth Cup, and the only reason Georgia Tech is our "rival" is because we're the only two teams to have ever won the Coastal.
Basically my secret is I just reload all of the position points I know are pivotal to my success (RBs, OL, DBs, QB, WR), getting 4 and 5 stars because of consistently great seasons... And then I just dominate. Except this season (year 2020) my quarterback play has kinda gone downhill and I don't really have a superstar anywhere on offense, more like just good not great talent... I'm still winning all of my games but no big margins like I'm used to.
i have won 3 national titles in a 7 year dynasty on Heisman difficulty but only once came close to the Heisman with a senior Athlete turned QB won the Maxwell and got snubbed for the Heisman, maybe i need to recruit better offensive linemen
what concerns me more is the we were put in the Dinich, that just seems like it would be bad luck to me lol
That I LOVED:
1) Even with Green and Eddie struggling our bench and other secondary players kept us in that game.
2) People keep wondering when Green will drop off, and I think he will (a little), but after last night, he could legitimately be a First Team All ACC candidate and finish the season averaging 20 points a game, but I want to see his assist numbers stay up, because that is what will make this team really really tough.
3) The distributed scoring made me feel all warm inside. How many times under Greenberg did we have more than two guys in double digits? We have five, count em', FIVE, guys there last night. That is an amazing stat and shows that we are more than just one or two players.
4) The fact that we kept up the pace to the very end was something I failed to see in previous teams, but this one did just that and we ended up gassing Iowa and running up a nice final margin.
5) JJs energy during the game along with high-fiving the student section at the end of the game is perhaps my favorite new "tradition" that JJ has implemented this year. Greenberg obviously cared about getting students to games, but sometimes he seemed to be doing it just for his own good and making us look like more of a basketball school than we really are. I don't think there is anything wrong with that but JJ seems to be doing it because he really does care about the product he is putting out there and appreciates the support the students have been giving this team.
I think we all need to understand though that this team probably won't win the ACC and we will start to see our weaknesses more as we play stiffer competition.
I for one am still keeping my expectations low and just hoping that this team continues to surprise me like they have so far. With that said, I don't think this team has as many weaknesses as I thought they did before the season, give all the credit to JJ and the player's work ethic in the offseason for that.
I would be happy with just competing with OK State for the whole game but I do think we can win, especially because we are at home and Cassell will be rocking.
Realistically, I'm just hoping that this team has a decent record in ACC play. But I know I'm gonna enjoy sitting back and watching them play and grow as a team all season.
Great job by JJ and this team so far. Can't wait to see how it all plays out!
I would like to see an Oregon type offense but we need better O-line coaching to even think about something like that, we have the QB that can run such a system in LT3, also i believe if Coleman Bulked up a some more he could be like the Black Mamba with his speed. Then throw in Drew Harris for the power runs up the middle if hes eligible next season. Knowles as the deep threat, Coles as the possession with Josh Stanford or Joel Caleb in the slot. So for that to work we would need much better O-line play.
Could improving special teams to return kicks and blocked kicks for TD's be included in "Installing an Offense"?
Keeping our foot on the pedal was one of the biggest things I noticed last night. You have to do that at this level, any team is capable of making a comeback. You're right, I don't think a Greenberg coached team would have won that game by as much as we did.
Does this mean we can rip the "QB Sneak out of the Shotgun" page out of the 4th and short section of the playbook?
Yep. Video game is too easy. I play on Heisman and I've won probably 90 games in a row... Also have had two Heisman winners, several award winners (including having defensive players finishing 1-3 in the Bednarik, Best LB, and Thorpe award voting...
You play to win the (big) game...Hello?!
I think ESPN is right to say that Virginia Tech have been somewhat a staple of consistency for a good part of the past decade. One thing we can be a bit proud of is we outlasted Texas in consistency. Virginia Tech and Texas were often mentioned as the most consistent programs in the nation, but then Texas flamed out, and Virginia Tech went on for a while.
The down year, I think, which was coming for a good while finally hit, and boy did it hit us hard.
I know nobody wants to hear this, but Alabama has been one of the most dominant programs in recent memory. However, there was another dominant program, and that was Southern California, winning a few national titles (one being vacated). I think football, like basketball, are cyclical.
Another example would be Florida State during the 1990s, dominant, running the tables, and slapping teams like dogs in heat, during their heydays. Ditto for Miami.
Unfortunately, all of the four schools I mentioned have won it all, and Virginia Tech have tasted it only once.
I think that's what frustrates the fan base. We were in the promised land once, and we want to go back again.
I also think that video game have skewed perspective since it's so easy to set the game difficulty level to easy and beat everybody. I know it because on my Xbox 360, I have already claimed 9 straight national championships and 10 ACC titles. I have Lane Stadium ranked as the #1 Toughest Places to Play. I recruit four and five stars on a regular basis. And that is just pure fiction.
So, maybe it's a combination of video games and unrealistic expectations.
Well, maybe not the university's population but I think the surrounding area's can. Opposing coaches have used the notion that the NRV is racist against us in recruiting for years. Most of the big SEC schools have an HBCU nearby so the athletes have somewhere they can feel more comfortable that's close to campus.
But I agree with 757, once they get to Blacksburg, they're celebrities so who really cares. All the booze and girls you could ever want along with all the glory on Worsham Field.
Spread that's dependent on running the ball. I love the way they run screens, they do a tremendous job of blocking. I feel like it's a 'physical' version of the spread. Couldn't see Oregon's offense at tech, I could envision Clemson's though.
No Adelson Division?
I wanted Georgia Tech to play Virginia Tech every year, plus play FSU, they have a little bit of history. GT-FSU has the potential to be at least a 3:30 game in most years. Better exposure for the league.
Would be our cross divisional opponent?
So many comments about the offense system!
Let me see if I can capture the gist of the majority of the comment - power offense, some sort of spread offense, and obviously better staff coaching the offense.
All of those are great philosophies, and there is no wrong answer. Georgia Tech, under Paul Johnson, has ranked consistently in the top five in rushing categories, and that is no surprise. While I don't care for the flexbone and wishbone offense, the way they execute it flawlessly is something to respect, even if they cut block 99% of the time.
A majority of you also mentioned the OL, which is arguably the worse unit that Tech have consistently fielded until last season, when with Logan Thomas behind center, they set records.
I think French touched on that topic in one of his film reviews. I agree that Stinespring and O'Cain made the mistake of adding more plays instead of building on the success of last season. The lack of a true feature running back with the committee approach have dampened the offense ability to generate drives on a consistent basis. French mentioned that Trey Edmunds sitting on the bench as a redshirt have harmed the bench. Why Scales wasn't used more often in short yard situation will never be explained, but Scales is a hell of a power option at a running back position.
Someone said that LT3 doesn't do a good job of reading, and I agree to a degree. I think when he has the time, he can be accurate and damned good, but when he feels pressured or rushed, it just screws him up.
I just hope that there will be change in the offense staff, but I am not entirely optimistic it will happen.
Unless they're getting a Head Coaching position, there is no reason to leave one of the top teams in the country (within a better conference) for Virginia Tech. It's sad, but its a fact.
Both. I'd like to consistently be in the title hunt every November.
Give me the title. However, all you can really do is what VT has done over the last 15 years- be really good nearly every year, and hope the breaks go your way one season.
Sorry I wasn't trying to be mean, it is hard to tell a stranger's tone through writing.
I thought USC-West was clever and sense making. I applaud you. (I'm a Trojan fan too if that makes a difference)

Even with FSU in the "New" that idea still blows donkey balls
