Agree with everything except the Sugar Bowl. That is a big deal as well, and the venue, in my opinion, is pretty sweet just because it's in nawlins. It was a blast doing Let's Go Hokies from the balconies on bourbon street and pregaming from there to the stadium with a fish bowl of liquor around my neck and a 12-pack in hand.

The Rose got the highest ratings of every bowl game other than the national title game last year. I don't have all the TV ratings handy over the years but that's usually the case. It's a big deal.

The Rose Bowl was the national title game in 2006. Since then the title game has been a separate one from the rest of the BCS bowls.

The roller hockey rink is really small. Right next to the Hahn-Hurst Basketball Practice Palace- er Center. As far as I know the ice hockey team practices there.

Two thumbs up for "50 Shades of Maroon (and Orange)". I LOLed.

Rose Bowl is the only bowl besides the BCSNCG that means anything, because it has that historically significant Big 10 vs Pac 10 matchup. It is the only bowl besides a national championship game that I would actually be excited to attend and watch the Hokies play in. It's branding is much stronger than the other BCS non-title bowls, as the Orange Bowl has lost luster, the Fiesta Bowl never had it, and the Sugar Bowl is played in an awful venue.

It is only a matter of time before someone loses their spot to Jerry World and the Cotton Bowl.

i think that the only one of those that we have ANY shot with is North .. and that's a very remote shot

the others are not really in play

He is right that it is a sporting "event". Since the BCS started the Rose Bowl has not really decided anything. Same goes for all the other "major" bowls. Why do people bother to watch? The major bowl brand names are what attract attention. It is all about former glory and "tradition". At one time these bowls meant something, other than money, and helped people decide who was the best team. To get an invitation to a bowl meant something. It doesn't work that way any more. Many or most bowls are are a waste of time and a financial loss for the schools. They are a prize for participation.

Why isn't the BS-CS really a series of bowls (like a playoff) leading to a National Championship? Isn't it called a series for a reason? If it is not really a series then it should be called something else. Series implies continuity and connection. But all the BCS bowls are supposedly independent of one another. It is really the Can't Recognize A Playoff (CRAP) system.

The fact that we have so few spots left this year has allowed the coaches to recruit 2014 recruits harder earlier. There could also just be a number of VT guys in the 2014 class also. With that said, having Shane in the mix definitely appears to have helped considerably.

Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Pearlman with some gems:

"If we were to vote today, we would vote for the status quo,"

"We think that in many respects, (the current system is) as good as you could do"

"The Rose Bowl, I think, is one of the outstanding sports events, sports properties, sports brands in the world," he said. "I don't think that's an overstatement."

facepalm

Guess you didn't catch the sarcasm:

"louder to beat on the ground"
..louder than our stands? pfft

and from his post above:
"more than enough capacity to accomodate all of home team's fans, plus plenty of room for visitors"
Their stadium is smaller than ours, but since nobody from UVA goes to their games, we can fill their stadium - hence the "plenty of room for visitors."

can we for argument's sake say that either Cuse or Pitt are Joan?

ok i just wanted an excuse :D

Say that we should imitate anything that the hoos have done, are doing, or will do!

haven't heard too much buzz about greg gilmore lately. ive heard that he has a pretty good relationship with charley wiles, do we have a shot at landing him?

Look at this past year's rankings. SEC has 5 teams in the top 25, 3 of which are in the top 5. The ACC has 3 teams in the top 25, all of which are in the 21-25 range. Not the best sample, but certainly not an outlier.

I'd challenge you instead to find 2 consecutive years in the past 10 years that contradict what I am saying. That is, find 2+ years where the ACC had more teams with higher rankings than the SEC. I doubt you would even find one year where the ACC had more teams in the top 25 than the SEC.

Also, it's not really the average ranking that influences this graph. Regardless, it's hard to make too many conclusions since we only know the top 25 or 30 teams each year and wins/losses are biased because of the isolation of conferences (more in conference games than ooc games).

(Sorry to ramble, but that's what forums are for)
Think about the humps here. Think about Florida, Auburn, Georgia, USC, and Tenn in the SEC hump and Wake, UVA, UMD, BC, and Miami in the ACC hump (moving UNC and NC State to the end). Then think about these programs in relationship to the average football program in D1 NCAA. To be honest, the more I look at and think about the graph I did in 2-3 minutes, the more I agree with it.

I could draw up awesome plans for 80K, goes like this....

1. Double up the metal bleachers in the North End Zone, adding about 7K seats. Just build a single, taller/wider structure.* Move a bunch of the students from the east stand over there. Now, think about this... enter sandman comes on and 2x and many crazy, fired up students are jumping up and down on metal bleachers. Do you know how loud that would be?

2. In the gaps between the South End Zone seats and East and West Stands, put in "Towers". Make the base Hokie stone and then design in steep stands that add about 3-4K seats on either side. Sell these to new Hokie club members at a discount to start. It will capture the recent grads and those folks that maybe want in but don't have the ability to "buy in" at silver right now. Again, it will be super rowdy and loud. It will cater to our blue collar fan base and be like the raiders "black hole" (only I would expect some Hokie Respect and some stadium enforcement to make sure loud and rowdy doesn't turn in WVU)

Boom- 14-15K seats added. And added awesomely.

*This also means replacing the scorebaord. Which has to be done anyway.

I agree 100%

Let's just get rid of the north end zone and create a hill. It would be louder to beat on the ground anyways.
