Bud deserves better than nosebleeds...
Paul Tenorio reports the Hokies have offered LB/WR Oren Burks. Burks attends South County, the same high school as the Vandyke brothers.
Quick impressions from his film: he's always around the ball, and has a burst coming off of the edge.
how many times have we been beaten by one? and how many of ours clang off the rim?
not this one

Last cadet-civilian snow fight I remember was back in 2003 / 04. Memories are very hazy other than a meeting at the drillfield as snow fell. Can't remember anything other than that.
I was looking at pics of the snow in Blacksburg on twitter yesterday, and it completely slipped my mind that this would be happening. I only participated once, my freshman year when I lived in Pritchard when the Cadets (we assumed) came and pulled our fire alarm one evening to get everybody out of the building. We eventually made it to the Drillfield. I'm sure I got pelted in the face a few times, but I definitely remember it being a blast.
I think you are a little harsh and slightly misguided in a couple of issues. First, don't forget Tech was in the Big East before joining the ACC. Many can argue that the Big East is a better conference than the ACC. We didn't recruit well then and couldn't sniff the tounrney. And yes, Maryland fans were riding Gary Williams but they have a reason to be more critical -they have a long tradition of being a top team in the nation as well as a national championship. I would compare Maryland basketball to Tech football. If Frank were to have a few 8-win seasons, many of us would want a change. Now, I also compare a team like Maryland football to Tech basketball. Yeah, we can compete every few years but overall we are a mid level team in the conference.
In terms of landing a "couple of 6'10" guys," that is a lot easier said than done. I did some quick research of the ACC rosters. Outside of Duke and UNC (who we can't recruit with) there are 16 players who are 6'10" or greater. That means teams average 1.6 players per roster of that height (incoming ACC schools Pitt and Syracuse have 3 combined.) Tech has one. I agree a big man would be a great piece but landing one that contributes is very difficult to do. For recruiting purposes, there are 12 that are 6'10" or taller and 4 stars on Rivals this year. Only one of those (a UNC commit) is even going to an ACC school! And this year has a few more than next. Actually, in 2013, there are only 4 players 6'10" or taller in the entire Rivals 150 -only one is a 4 star! So, to land one, we need one who isn't being recruited by every team in the nation, is interested in playing in the ACC, possibly moving far away from home and wants to come to Virginia Tech. To me, finding a top 100 6'8" guy is better than finding a 2-star 6'10" that will ride the pine.
In terms of big men, over the past 4-5 years the two most promising never suited up for Tech. Allan Chaney is a big 6'9" and would have been a force at a couple of positions. Also, do you blame Seth for Augustus Gilchrist (6'10") changing his mind and switching schools in a very shady way? Seth brought in Gene Swindle a couple of years ago but as with many big men, he turned out to be not so good and had a few injuries. I believe the last I heard he was at JMU after transferring. We currently have a 6'10" freshman so let's see how that works out. Until then, we will have to play like most ACC schools and without a massive center.
In terms of a pure shooter, wasn't Robert Brown considered a top 75 recruit who was a very good shooter? I think we will be fine once these young guys get a year or so under them. I look at a couple of ACC games as very tough losses. Without Erick Green, we lost by 2 at BC. Add him to the roster that game, we don't turn the ball over as much and his history says he gets double digits points, a minimum of 6 more than his replacement, Rankin was able to contribute. At Maryland, we scored 19 points in the first half and didn't play solid D until the second. Then you have the two FSU losses. One by a game winning 3-pointer and the other the product of another slow first half. A three in the closing seconds against Wake earlier in the year was also a tough loss. Add those close games to the fact we are 3-2 in our last 5 ACC games and I think there is tons of promise with this group. If they don't progress next year, then you start the clock on Seth.
He is now firmly in my top 5 favorite players.
As a former cadet I remember having the tactical advantage of upper quad. The civilians would win every time if they could just draw the cadets into the middle of the drillfield (let them think they're winning), than surround the cadets. Sometimes the sheer numbers would be overwhelming, but I remember us being able to push the civilians all the way back to Pritchard my sophomore year. Most years the fight would stall out and stay on the drillfield. My fifth year I was a civilian and gladly switched sides along with a few my fellow fifth years (former cadets).
Football games on the drillfield after a fresh snowfall was a great time too. Nothing like tackling in knee deep snow.
but i don't see the 40 time being legit .. not in film that i've seen anyway. based on what i've seen -- mizzelle looks the fastest .. jabo lee looks pretty damned fast too .. and ryan green looks good (though i'd be surprised if we landed him). i'm sure we'd LOVE to have derrick green but all signs point to him going OOS .. i haven't seen daniel (dj) reid on film but most in the know think that we have a good shot with him and Lee.
We risked driving from foxridge to campus in order to take part in the event, and other than getting beamed in the face two or three times, definitely had a blast. Because it was scheduled so early this year, the cadets couldnt get a head start on fortifications and what not, so the civilians were actually able to overpower the cadets for the majority of the time while I was there.
I do remember this very well. We are always looking forward to this and I must say communication and "tactics" weren't always there but we made sure we helped each other out. A story... one year I think 2008 after the snow ball fight started for an hour some frat kid brought out his flag for pledging which just made him a target for the cadets. We took his flag ran back to Upper Quad with it and hoisted it up the flag pole in victory.
that's a legit 40-time, but at 6', 215 that would be incredible to land him. In Shane we trust.
this kid is a ballhawk. I know this is highschool and everyone looks good on tape, but man he is always tracking the ball in the air.
Was told from a reliable PSU source that no teams would leave the B1G due to all the money they get from the B1G network.
Obviously speaking as a former cadet I must say I never sit for football games!! We get to crowd surf the hokie bird!! TV time every thursday night! Loudest section and we were probably the only sober ones in the stadium. By all means you can drink but we have blast and I always enjoy the complementary turkey legs given to me here and there! By the way we get the other team's mascot to crowd surf us sometimes... and we get the cannon fired on our section during the pre-game... just saying...
I'm not saying he will play the same positions but he is fast and agile!! I like him!
He can be added to the VT target list. I can't remember the last time we pulled somebody out of Michigan, though.

this be it.
I'd love to see the comparisons of what Penn State earns in the B1G vs. what they would earn in the ACC with ND as the other addition. Adding those two would increase the TV deal immensely. Also, there is the academic money from research and grants, and I don't know how the ACC and B1G compare in that respect.
But that's just my ego talking.
Yeah, we were like, row K. With 8 season tix. And Club passes. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Redic, but snooty as hell
Otherwise, I agree with everything else. IMO, the only 3 schools out there (and using "out there" broadly) that fit what the ACC wants are UConn, Rutgers, and ND. Every other team either isn't moving or isn't getting into the ACC. Geographically and football-wise WVU fit but there was no way the ACC would give them an invite b/c of their academics.

the prairie the grass between pritchard, lee, owens, war memorial and dietrich before the filled it with dorms had a monster snow ball fight with thousands of participants.
pritchard vs lee ... vs the small contingent from my quad. we had 2 three man slingshots. we crushed on some fools before both sides turned on us and chased us down the hill to owens and all the way to the ghetto (corp dorms.)
good times.
