Last year, behind Coale, before Roberts was injured. But, things could change this spring/August.

I think Greenberg is good at building a program, but is not a good on court game coach. Watch the lack of offensive plays. One guy dribbles at the top of the key while the rest stand around. The only play I see is when Davilla runs up top and is immediately passed the ball and the offense runs through him. Very strange as the next pass usually results in a missed jump shot and Davilla is not in position to rebound.

The majority of the game Greenberg is shown rubbing his face or looking away and glancing out of the corner of his eye. It is like he is a frustrated fan when he should be actually coaching. Plays if you can call them that out of time outs are one guy trying to get open and everyone else standing around again. It really is quite annoying to watch.

I think a young X's and O's coach would be well served. Also, recruit a couple pure jump shooters and a couple 6'10" guys. Greenberg seems to like midsize athletic guys who can play his D, but are lacking on the offensive end.

People say look at where he took us, but we were not in the ACC back then. This is a cream of the crop conference. No other programs in this league would tolerate such mediocre performance and missing the NCAA tournament year after year.

I think Greenberg is loved by other coaches and the media. Dicky V loves him and rails for him. Jim Rome had him on today talking about Duke, UNC and the Big East, but not what he is doing for VT. However, he ticked off the officials and NCAA. It started with Washington's senior year when he ranted to the selection committe about why we should have been in when we probably should not have. That carried over to the next year when we should have been in and got snubbed with a 10 and 6 conference record. I think he painted us in a corner. He is lucky he has an AD who is very loyal. If not for that I think he would be done after this season barring a huge turnaround.

This is ACC basketball. Not the Atlantic 10. I want to see the Hokies start beating the bottom tier teams like they should and start making it to the dance. Maryland was putting heat on Gary Williams just a few years removed from a freakin National Championship. Would Greenberg survive at Maryland?

I think they will Shuman, Arkema, Gibson should all become serviceable backups this year. I'm not worried about there being depth in terms of bodies to actually play on the OL any more. We have that. The question is whether or not we can effectively use them.

I am starting to agree with what you say more and more. I used to think a national title could be won with overachieving 3 stars but after looking at the best players through Tech, a majority of them are 4 or 5 stars. I don't think we need to land a 5 star every year but landing high 4 stars and/or top 100 talent will mean better overall talent depth. Also, hitting on 2-3 out of 10 3 stars or less is great but I will take hitting on 6-7 4 or 5 stars everytime.

Sad to see former succesfull college players not be successfull in life after college. Happens too often.

The numbers will show that 4 or 5 stars will generally outperform lesser stars. VT likes to RS 2-3 stars unless they are ready to play or there are issues with depth due to graduations/injuries. 4 or 5 stars usually come in ready, but also expecting, to play. CFB's formula gets good results but I don't think it will lead to a NC without at least a couple 5 stars every year or two.

I think he could be a great primary as a DE and a really good specialist DT against run oriented offenses like GT/Michigan. If Harley is able to step into the 2 deep at DT, maybe Marshall can get moved out to DE and play in the two deep there and then also be our 5th DT and slide inside when needed.

Think about Gayle, Little Hopkins, Marshall and Collins all on the DL vs GT. That's the right blend of speed and power to contain the run game. In obvious run/dive scenarios you could put 5 on the line with Big Hopkins and really snuff that offense out. Or so I like to think.

yeah not saying that Burns and Hackenberg aren't good (they seem very good) .. just saying that I don't think they're the type of QB that VT is looking for. Bucky is more in the mold of Logan Thomas. He's about the same height, about 20 or so lbs lighter, but may be better developed (passing, read-wise) than LT was at the high school level

Any particular reason you have Davis ahead of Roberts? It could go either way and doesn't make a big deal but I'm curious.

I updated the two-deep with boundary/field corner, stud/end and nose/tackle. Now we're putting 11 men on the field on defense. Just keep in mind these aren't projections. Once spring ball is over we'll have a much better idea where Fuller is playing, and the rest of the defense, especially the secondary, will fall in line. Any position without a backup is because it's not super obvious who will play there.

Very interesting take. Offering one VA QB makes sense for many reasons, one of which being that the staff can focus on him. Like I said in the original post I know next to nothing about most of these recruits and am waiting until next season to see what they do as seniors. I figured that, at this point, if the staff has offered a scholarship, then they must be pretty good. Thanks for the info- I am going to check more on him and Bucky.

I think either of the two freshmen walk-on kickers could get a shot at the starting job for kick-offs or place kicking. If I recall correctly, Justin Myer won the kick off job as a true freshmen.

Would Martin Scales ever get a look at running back? Doesn't have fullback size and I understand he's a relentless runner.

Basically it should be:

End

1. JAMES GAYLE
1. J.R. COLLINS
2. Tyrel Wilson
2. Zack McCray

D-Tackle

1. ANTOINE HOPKINS
1. DERRICK HOPKINS
2. Corey Marshall
2. Luther Maddy

Corner

1. KYLE FULLER
1. DETRICK BONNER
2. Kyshoen Jarrett
2. Donaldven Manning

You can see it in the first table. Basically there's a bug in my script that generates the second table. I'll get it updated. Thanks for pointing it out. Doing things at 3:30 AM always leads to mistakes.

I definitely forgot to RS Dyrell. Thanks!

His injury last year allowed him to take a RS. That's how he's able to come back, otherwise he would have been out with Boykin

VT Targets

4. Kendall Fuller
15. E.J. Levenberry
24. Marquez North

There's a lot of high quality talent VT is going after. This recruiting cycle is going to be exciting, and could be our best ever. Also, I'm sure I missed a few. Let me know if you find more.

I was in Bagram watching the feed of that fight, complete nightmare for the guys on the ground. ACWL indeed. Prediction - Wayne Ward II on special teams.

you're speaking of Burns? Most people that I've read that have an educated take think that he's way overrated and still very raw (out of VA's top 3 QBs). Also, he and Hackenberg are more pro-style QBs and VT tends to go more for a dual-threat type .. which neither one of them are. They've offered one QB in VA -- Bucky .. and he is at the top of their list. Some say that they've held off on offering other VA QBs to show him the love .. They may not offer either Burns or Hackenberg at all for these reasons (they've offered 3 or 4 QBs already, one in VA).
