I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm really disappointed. I'd hoped he would be here for the long haul to turn the program around, but honestly I don't know if I'd want to be here either if I were him. Here's the ESPN article, it looks to be all but official.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are considering the possibility of firing coach Travis Ford after the team was ousted in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, sources confirmed to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman.
The chance of Ford being fired is "50-50," one source close to the situation said.
Tennessee is close to a deal with former Texas head coach Rick Barnes after firing Donnie Tyndall after one year because of NCAA violations which many knew about at the time of his hiring. Cuonzo (spelling?) Martin left the year before after a Sweet Sixteen run for Cal because he didn't get along with the Athletic office and the fans. Bruce Pearl preceded him and we all know what happened there.
According to the VT men's basketball account, Adam Smith will transfer and play elsewhere next year. Sad to see him leave, but it now opens up a scholly for Buzz this upcoming year.
Not sure if anyone else has caught the Conan March Madness commercials, but I happened to get a quick glance at the studio in a recent one and... There is something there I wasn't expecting to see...
Guess they realized they needed to dust it off with all the Buzz we have going on with the program now.
Buzz Williams was on Chad Duke vs. the World yesterday. It's definitely worth a listen.
Chad Dukes is joined on CDVTW by Buzz Williams, head men's basketball coach for Virginia Tech, to discuss Virginia's early dismissal from the NCAA Tournament, Duke's chances of winning the whole thing, West Virginia's press defense, his infamous sweater and much, much more.
The NCAA pays conferences for the performances of their teams in a tournament over a six-year period beginning in the next year. Teams earn a unit per game played, except the championship game, which is not included.
Brown chipped in 21 points as UAB took down Iowa State 60-59. He scored 11 points in the second half to keep UAB just out of reach of the Cyclones. He hit a huge three with just less than a minute left that forced Iowa State into fouling and the Blazers hit their free throws to close out the game. Pretty good story for Brown but just another what if for those of us that have followed Hokie Basketball.
This was a painful season for everyone, Buzz, players, and fans alike. The OOC schedule had some high moments but it also had some painfully low moments. Tech managed to come through that stretch in about the same place as we have the last few years. 8-5 record, with three of the five losses by less than one basket. The two losses by more than that turned out to be the only two ranked teams on our OOC in #11 Northern Iowa and #18 WVU, who finished their seasons 30-3 and 22-9. No real shame in losing those two games with the inexperienced make up of our roster. Nothing to crow about but nothing really to hang our heads about either except for maybe the loss to Appalachian State.
