Basketball Forum
Hello All,
On this fine website we all frequent there used to be a section before football games that was called "The Mascot Mock." It was a beloved tradition up to the point where we forgot about it, resurected it, immediately lost an important game, and then imediately burried it, scortched and then salted the earth where the dead body of the Mascot Mock lay. This little forum post is decidedly not that.
I was talking to one of my friends about why it is better to have only one mascot. The answer would seem to be the obvious "branding" but who really cares about that, right? It's time to talk about characterization!

The Hokies travel to State College to take on the Nittany Lions. Both teams come in on wins, the Hokies having dispatched Morgan State 83-63 and Penn State having beaten Bucknell 88-80. The Nittany Lions also went 2-1 over the holidays in the Charleston Classic, losing in the first round in a surprising 106-97 double overtime loss to the Charlotte 49ers.

This is apparently the final game of the Cancun Challenge. The Hokies face Morgan State coming off a 78-63 over Miami(OH) on Wednesday night. Morgan State comes in after beating Liberty 51-50 by hitting a shot with 3 seconds remaining. That was the Bears first win on the season. Hopefully the coaching staff uses their win over Liberty to keep these young Hokies on edge for this opponent as it could be a quiet day in Cassell if the crowd is still dealing with a double dose of Thanksgiving/LoLUVA beating hangover.

Came across this piece on the SB Nation blog, Ridiculous Upside. Apparently, our boy Jarell has been tearing it up so far with the Austin Spurs, of the NBA Developmental League. Nice to see him getting his legs under him, and I hope we can see him in the NBA in good time!

The Hokies dont have any time to sit and stew about the loss to Northern Iowa yesterday that dropped them to 2-2 on the season as they get the Redhawks of Miami(Ohio) this evening as the conclusion of the Cancun Challenge slate. Tech should be about equal with this opponent, as the Redhawks beat Liberty earlier this month by a similar score to what Tech managed. The Redhawks are coming off a loss yesterday to NorthWestern by nine so will also be looking to get back on the winning track.

Jimmy Butler was Buzz's first real "protege" and has helped him made a name as an elite developer of talent. Jimmy Butler wasn't supposed to be a guy that would even make it out of Tomball, TX let lone be on the brink of an All-Star appearance, a $50 million/4 years contract and a leader on a championship contender.

One thing of Note for Students: Tech plans to have televisions set up at the game so that the Football game can be watched on TVs while also having people attend the basketball game. Two for one kind of opportunity.

Shirts will cost $25. That price includes any applicable tax and shipping. 2XL and 3XL will be $3 more because we get charged more for the shirt. If you want me to order a shirt for you please let me know the sizes and quantities you'll need in the comments below. This is a handshake commitment to buy, so please don't ask me to order you a shirt unless you 100% plan on buying one.
If 50+ of you are interested these will go ahead and get printed. I've beat the drum enough, but y'all buying shirts and our merchandise is what keeps TKP free.
Hope you all like the design and thank you for supporting TKP!

I had seen several days ago that Buzz listed Liberty Flames head coach Dale Layer as one of the most influential people in his life. I found that interesting, but didn't understand why. Knowing Buzz was devout, and knowing Liberty University, I thought the connection might be faith based as a result of some meeting this summer.
The actual connection is much more deep, and more telling of the unique character of Buzz Williams.

Haven't heard since the basketball season started? Anybody know if there are still plans for Isaiah Ford to join the team? I would assume it is slightly more complicated now that he is a #1 receiver as opposed to a redshirt freshman or player further down the depth chart.
Secondary question which I have always wondered, How do scholarship #s work in a situation like his? Would the basketball team get a free player that wouldn't count against a scholarship since he is on scholarship for football?

Led in scoring by Justin Bibbs and Malik Mueller with 15 points a piece the Hokies controlled the game from the beginning and led 30-20 at the half. Ahmed Hill came on late in the second half to contribute 11 points as the Hokies extended their lead. The team had very balanced scoring with points from 10 players as Buzz got everyone involved except for Greg Donlon. The team ran quite a few four guard sets, especially since Joey Van Zegeren and Satchel Pierce both were in foul trouble early and each eventually fouled out of the game. I was surprised to not see more of Shane Henry with this going on but his weight appears to be a real issue in playing down low.

In light of all of the questioning of the football team and calling for (enter coach's name here)'s head, I thought I'd prepare a hypothetical scenario for you.
What if we still suck at basketball this year?
What if we don't win a single ACC game this season? What then?
How will you feel about Buzz Williams, Whit Babcock, and the athletic program as a whole then?
"Yeah well that's not going to happen RealDiehl, Buzz is a boss and we're gonna win games." Yeah, well, you would have called BS on me if I told you the football team would beat Ohio State but lose to ECU, Pitt, Miami and BC this year too.

It was announced Tuesday that next season the Hokies will play in the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, FL. The opponents in this tournament will be Illinois, Iowa State, and University of Alabama-Birmingham. If we end up with games against UAB, we would likely end up facing former Hokie Robert Brown, who transferred to UAB after James Johnson first season.
Its good to see that Buzz is already starting to improve our Out of Conference strength of schedule.
