I was just reading an article that touched on what we've discussed here in the past, about how Lane Stadium and the fan base has lost a lot of pep in the last couple of years (at least back to 2010/2011). So...what do you think Whit can do, within reason, to bring back some of the excitement and make Lane a force with which to be reckoned again?
Don't count the givens:
1)#ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
2)Stick it in
3)For all the former MVs: Number 6 (For everyone else, the Hey Hey Goodbye song)
4)A football team that DOESN'T struggle against Duke, or to put up a TD against UVA.

I stumbled upon this on this great snow day and if any of you have netflix or amazon prime, you need to watch "Schooled: The Price of College Sports". It highlights the evolution of "amateurism" in college sports and the hypocrisy of the NCAA. It features candid interviews from former athletes, coaches, administrators and media personnel. The story of Kent Waldrep and his suit against the NCAA shows how the association uses the term "student-athlete" to cover their own asses. This term was a product of Walter Byers (the first employee of the NCAA) and he was intrumental in establishing standards (good and bad) that still have lasting effects.

I know this isn't a political forum (thank you SO MUCH, Joe.) But hey, the most powerful men in the world deserve a shout-out.
Trivia tid bits -
President Taft, who weighed 332 pounds, got stuck in the White House bathtub the first time he used it. A larger one was ordered. The Taft's owned the last presidential cow and the first White House automobile.
President Teddy Roosevelt lost the sight in one eye while boxing in the White House. Too cool.
President LBJ rejected his official portrait painting, saying it was the ugliest thing he ever saw. He also held cabinet meetings while taking a dump. With cabinet members in the bathroom with him. That's totally pimpin'.

So, this is obviously just a dream, but I thought it pertinent and fantastic if it turns prophetic.
Last night, in my dream, I watched the National Championship Game. For the second year in a row, the ACC beat a SEC team to win the Championship.
The game was Hokies versus Tigers (LSU).
We did not have a perfect season. However, after narrowly losing to Ohio State, we went on a domination tour of all of our opponents, beating an, until then, undefeated Florida State team that were the favorites to repeat for National Championship (and number one team).
It was beautiful, and seeing Beamer lift that crystal ball brought tears to my eyes, as FINALLY, he had it.
Alas...only a dream. But a good dream.

I moonlight as a software engineer and husband.
Gotta add Dad too, if what I hear is true.
Congrats to your better half. Hope everyone is healthy and happy.
Is it little Joe or Joie?

In the wake of recent events, what with a new AD and the KeyPlay baby showing up yesterday, I thought it would be prudent to rejoin our Hokies in 2036 to check in on the state of the program.
On this warm September day, it is Head Coach Shane Beamer's fifth season in charge and he is yet to fully replicate the success of his predecessors. Head Coach Bud Foster retired after winning his third national championship, and he will be honored at halftime today in the Frank Beamer Terror Dome, a retractable roofed, on campus dome seating 114,000, built with the hundreds of millions of dollars raised by AD Whit Babcock. The dome was named for the two time national champion coach and Frank's only disappointment is that they did not meet his request to accommodate a 1/2 mile race track inside.

Editor's Note: Bumped to the front because I'm a sucker for numbers. Thanks for writing, Sammy. --Joe
Last week, news broke that Virginia Tech offensive line coach Jeff Grimes would be departing Blacksburg after one season for the same position at LSU. Grimes is originally from Texas, played his college ball at UTEP and this move gets Grimes closer to his Texas roots. However, the cold, hard fact is at the end of the day, Grimes likely left Virginia Tech because LSU made him a far more lucrative offer than the Hokies could.
As Joe pointed out in an earlier post, Grimes is probably in line for a significant pay raise from the Tigers. This has sparked terrific debate and conversation among the Hokie Nation and right here on The Key Play on both coaching salaries and Hokie Club contributions.

Today, we bear witness to the 2013 Season Championship games.
Today's games feature veteran and future Hall of Famer as well as the newest of rookies, in uniform for the first time in the NFL. An appropriate bookend for this season.

Resident Swim Team alumni here trying to dull the pain of our revenue sports woes with how far our non-revenue sports have come.
Without getting too into it, this is a HUGE deal. When we first joined the ACC, UVA looked at us like we were a joke. We had a few studs that could hang with their best, but from top to bottom, beating them never seemed possible. UVA has been virtually unbeatable for the past 20 years, and we didn't just beat them, we SPANKED them.
Keep an eye on the ACC Championship meet next month. The boys might be coming back with some hardware.

I did not know that the former FSU QB coach 2010-2012 was now with Auburn.
The mediocre backfield of Auburn sure did a good job of covering the seriously good WRs and TE of FSU that first half. Blitz packages and run coverage was right on too.
Really good job of anticipating.
Apparently too good.
Auburn was stealing FSU signals

He has emerged as a favorite to head back to the NFL. With this, do you see any Penn State players looking to transfer or commits looking elsewhere? Those student-athletes have been through a lot the past couple years and losing another head coach is another tough time to overcome. Any thoughts on any of this or if O'Brien actually gets the Texans job?

Mehul Sanghani is a Virginia Tech graduate and thanks to his generous donation to Kind Campaign, this video exists. It involves Aaron Paul (Jesse from Breaking Bad) and Mike London. Enjoy. I know I did.
