Although it killed the play, I was glad to see Evans underthrow Ford on that route, because it shows he was working on the overthrows from the week before.

I think we do in terms of receivers. I think accuracy on the long balls is what we are lacking at the moment. At Liberty many were overthrown. Last night he under threw Ford which caused Ford to have to slow down and allowed the defender to get in on it and break it up. If he hits ford in stride that's most likely six.
However if we can continue to run the ball as well as we did last night I think that will go a long way to opening up the long ball on play action. I think UT played the deep ball well and didn't allow it cause it would get us right back into the game. Also their guy on ford is a legit defensive back, one of the tops in the SEC.

Only commenting based on what I've read in comments here after last night's game, but it sounds like UT's defensive strategy made it tough to throw the deep vertical passes last night. They gave us the short throws, so that's what we took.
Having said that, I do wonder if Evans can throw the deep ball effectively. But, I'm not going to make a judgment based on last night's game.

No lie, when I first saw the topic, I misread it at throat.
No, sorry, I disagree with this idea.
Fuente wants a full and active rotation on offense, with a lot of interchangeable parts. When we get that rotation down, we will reap benefits of having fresh legs on the line all game long. You can't abandon the plan because it takes time to get right. There's gonna be a lot of growing pains as Fuente's scheme is installed.
We've been trying to base our O line on the idea of a core starting five since Curt Newsome was our coach, and it has never worked. With the way Fuente designs his plays, I think having fresh legs on this line is more important t that finding five starters with great chemistry.
I haven't read much on here since the game, so I don't know what everyone else's narrative is. But in my opinion, we did just about everything right except for hold on to the football. I don't think we needed to throw deep any more often, or run more or less. Statistically, we beat UT in almost every category, except for turnovers. And that's the one thing we didn't do in the first quarter when we were dominating: turn the ball over.

Toward the end of the game last night, a UT fan to my right started chanting "SEC, SEC..." I was so used to it, that I didn't even think anything of it. But, a VT fan 4-5 rows down absolutely lost his (drunk) mind over this. He did his best to start a fight with the UT guy. It went on and on....honestly, the VT guy came off looking like an idiot.
But to your point, yes, SEC fans love to toot the SEC horn. It's very annoying.
Im sorry that some folks had a bad time. our experience was outstanding end to end. We came in on exit 17 and got to the stadium around noon. There was very little wait to get into our lot ( were were outside gate 17. Tailgated all afternoon did the fan exp stuff, and then went into the game around 6:30.
We sat in the Pearson Terrace and though it was a stout hike, we were in thru gate 18 in less than ten min and in our seats by 7pm. We got water and pepsi at the start of the 2nd qtr and the lines were full but moved ok, and our seats were great considering that no sub $500 seat was great (the seats made me envious of my seats at richmond had this been a NASCAR race!!).
We left the stadium around 6 min left with the mass exodus following the UT score off the Phillips fumble. We unpacked the car, packed it back up on the trailer tray and headed out. We got back to Blacksburg at 3am and that was with a stop in Dublin to let off some of our group.
Every person working there was polite and were where they should be both getting us in and getting us out. Everything was clearly labeled, and I hell, I got to drive across the actual drag strip ( 1/4 mile time was around 5 min due to the other cars, but the parachute did deploy).
I think the only negatives was being on that black asphalt and not getting to group with Hokies, it was more of a "you park here" so it was really dispersed with Ut and VT and then stretches of cars where folks went somewhere else to tailgate. I would love it if they make this like and every five years thing, kind of a once per class deal.
As someone who was on the field/at field level, was crowd noise audible down there? I about lost my voice, but I swear I don't think a single Vol fan did...I was expecting them to be incredibly loud on defense, but to no avail.
It looked like he was, live. I was watching this closely through binoculars.
I'll be watching this play recorded in a little while.
Worst ESPN broadcast I have seen in a long time. I am not a fan of the network but they do college football right. It was more than just being in such a weird venue. The production was just bad. So few replays, etc.

# | Ask TKP: What's your one positive and negative takeaway from Battle at Bristol? Positive: The first quarter is what our team can be when we play disciplined football (i.e. No fumbles and no personal fouls). The fumbles and personal fouls can be coached out of players.
Negatives: We played undisciplined football last night and gave away a game on the biggest stage ever. I hate undisciplined football.
After they did the live drawing, the winning envelope was taken away to be verified or something. Insert shadiness. So no winner was announced after the live drawing. I entered it and the info on the site said winner would be contacted by phone at the end of the third quarter.

McMillian was used as the featured back. Slye is incredible on kickoffs. Loved the commitment to getting Bucky the ball. Nijman looks impressive. Hill looks like a future force at end. Ekanem and Williams looked good on The d line.Team shows great emotion and was not overwhelmed by the atmosphere. This was the best defense we will play this season and we moved the ball. No more 100 total yard games on offense.
Negatives: The punting game is going to be bad all year, it appears. The best o lineman was planted on the bench and his replacement struggled mightily. Personnel is not where it needs to be to win against an opponent like the Vols. That should not surprise any of us.
Disagree with them winning a lot of games. They look suspect to me. Their OL is super porous. We got pressure rushing 3! Dobbs was hit all night. Outside of two nice passes into the end zone v one on one their passing game is non-existent. If you can contain their run game then I don't think they can do much. Their defense is full of talent but I still wasn't as impressed as we pretty much moved the ball at will on them save our penalties and fumbles that saved them. I'm not sure how the rest of the SEC east is so maybe they will but that will mean the SEC East is weak IMO. Bama wins the SEC easy this year.
You pull a name from a locked cage and then don't call out the name or any identifying marker. Instead pass the name to another person, who does a little pirouette and puts the slip in a "sealed" envelope and hands it to a third person, who then takes said envelope and disappears from any apparent supervision for a significant amount of time before name is announced. We saw 2 more people handle the slip of paper with the name on it than you should ever see in a drawing, and God knows how many once they left our view.
It reeks of fraud even if none occurred, and had I been one who bought a 10 dollar raffle ticket, I'd be demanding a refund and filing a serious complaint with whatever governing body in in charge of such things in Tennessee.
Yeah, even if you talk a UT fan in a corner, the back up is the "we play in the SEC" speech.
Even last night, sometime in third quarter, Tennessee fans were chanting "S-E-C" over and over. Aside from FSU and Clemson, no one thinks much of us or the ACC.
These exhibition games don't count at all. /s
