I interpreted OP's reference to "the Beamer clan" as being more inclusive than just Shane's spouse and children. Obviously Frank is in a position to help Shane ease any financial burden incurred by a change of employment status. I never got the vibe that the implication was that Shane could retire on his own salary, but rather that Shane, if he wanted to, could become an "employee" of his father.
There's exactly zero chance this happens. Shane enjoys coaching too much. It's in his blood. But I do think the original assertion that money is essentially a non-issue for Shane during this transitory period in his life is accurate.
Imagine, as well, how Bud's defense will be when playing with a lead more often than not. This could show us a side of Bud's scheme we've not seen in several years. After cautious optimism, I'm all in with this hire and couldn't be more excited for our immediate future.

I don't know why we're even talking about this, given that Shane is still employable, and still has a bright future and career.
Coaching staff make decent money, and having time off between gigs is a part of the deal.
Didn't want to make a new thread, but is it safe to say that VT's roster is more talented than that of Memphis? I have no doubt that it will take time for the program to turn around, but if that's the case, do you think it would be more because VT's players do not fit Fuente's system, or they would just need time to learn and adapt to it?
Whose wife doesn't work, like most major college coaches spouses.

I don't think this is entirely true. This quote (from a really interesting piece at roanoke.com, http://www.roanoke.com/sports/colleges/va_tech/fuente-won-over-foster-du...) seems to suggest that Foster was involved in the process.
"I was disappointed that I didn't really get an opportunity, and I expressed that to him, that I didn't get a chance to really state my case," Foster said. "But at the end of the day, Whit, we kind of talked about this and me being involved. I was really excited about it."
This quote from the same article also made me very happy that we have Whit as well: "I did say, 'If it's not Bud you better have a darn good one you bring in here,'"
I understand that Shane has made a decent salary the past few years, but the original poster suggested that Shane could just retire and live off what he has made to date. I know nothing about Shane's financial situation but, I have to imagine raising three kids and then sending them to college (assuming none get scholarships) without any full time income is not something Shane had in the plans.
Obviously we all know Frank is a very generous person and he isn't going to let his son and grandchildren go broke but I don't know how someone can just say Shane can retire and live off of his past earnings. I mean he is only 38 years old.
That would be great. I mean UMd is a financial disaster already, which is why they bolted for the B1G to take the cash grab to not go under, so as soon as they get somewhat financially stable, hiring Richt would be one of the most irresponsible things they could imaginably do.

Looks like UMD is making a push for Richt. Could be an issue on the recruiting trail.
Starting to sound like Whit, used his channels (he's good friends with Cronin, the head coach of Cinci, who happens to have the same agent as Fuente) to let them know our interest before Frank made his retirement official, and it sounds like Fuente's agent knew this would be the job he would take. No sense in floating his name out there if he already had his mind made up.
I think it is VERY important that we remember that Bud wasn't guaranteed to be on this staff, he wasn't involved with the coaching search, and he was told he wasn't going to be a serious candidate at the beginning of the process out of respect from Whit Babcock. He had every reason in the world to leave this program, and yet, the first thing Fuente did after deciding to take the job was to meet Bud in person and sell himself and his vision in hopes of keeping him around. Bud is our defensive coordinator in the future because he is the best man for that job as determined by Coach Fuente.

The reason this worked out was 1) Bud loves the place - it's his home, 2) Whit was straightforward with all of it, and didn't lead anybody on with "courtesy interviews". Bud had time to process this before-hand, 3) Bud already had a great contract in place. VT would have had to pay if he wasn't retained, 4) Bud still has a lot of potential for excellence (and even growth) as a DC, 5) With a defense already in place, Fuente can focus on the offense and recruiting.
In other words, this was a good move for all the involved parties.
Oh, I agree with you that it'd be nice to have some fresh young faces on the D to help reinvigorate the recruiting on that side of the ball, i just don't want to shoehorn someone in for the sake of recruiting at the expense of filling a needed coaching role.
Well I mean, a coach winning at UVA is already OPTIONal so...

phew. thats a huge get for UCF, I was scared Syracuse or Maryland would get him and we'd have to recruit against him in our own backyard or play against him at Syracuse, hell be this years Fuente/Herman in 2-3 years or less at UCF.

I think the uncertainty of Beamer's future and how much longer he was going to coach was one of the major factors that has hurt us in recruiting in recent years. At least, this can no longer be used against us and with the new staff, I think we see a major improvement in Foster's recruiting.
Patience is going to be key for the next few years. We might win 8 or 9 games a year over the next few years or we might win 6 or 7. We just have to be patient and let CJF do his thing.
If they'd fired Frank after the `92 season who knows where we'd be now. Probably in the AAC hoping for a plus .500 season. But they didn't, and he went to 23 straight bowls.
I'm holding back laughing tears because of the pink hued googley eyed Frank. Jesus gawd, that is funny!
